The impact of nicotine on osseointegration - An experimental study in the femur and tibia of rabbits

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of an enhanced systematic dose of nicotine on osseointegration of titanium implants. Material and methods: Sixteen female rabbits received either nicotine ( n = 8) or saline ( n 8) administered subcutaneously via mini-osmotic pumps for 2 months. The pump delivered 6 mg/kg/min of nicotine for the animals in the test group. Blood was

Protein kinase A-dependent and -independent stimulation of exocytosis by cAMP in mouse pancreatic B-cells

1. The mechanisms by which cAMP stimulates Ca(2+)-dependent insulin secretion were investigated by combining measurements of whole-cell Ca2+ currents, the cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and membrane capacitance in single mouse B-cells maintained in tissue culture. 2. Cyclic AMP stimulated exocytosis > 4-fold in whole-cell experiments in which secretion was evoked by intracellular di

Feeding Strategies Based on Probing Control for E. coli and V. cholerae Cultivations

TillsatsThe recombinant DNA techniques have made it possible to produce many different proteins for a wide range of applications. The vector encoding for the recombinant protein is often inserted in the bacterium E. coli as it is a well studied and a well-known organism. To achieve a high productivity, it is important to reach a high cell density. This is obtained through fed-batch operation where the nut

Simulation and Verification of Pacemaker Antennas

Two different antennas for use in implanted pacemakers are analyzed by simulation and measurement. The analysis was made with an FDTD-code. The simulations and measurements show good agreement. The SAR values for both the antennas are within the limits recommended by ICNIRP when the antenna is fed with 25 uW.

Late cretaceous sharks Cretoxyrhina and Cardabiodon from Montana, USA

The middle part of the Cretaceous represents a time of high diversity and rapid rates of dental evolution in lamniform sharks. Several species had a very wide spatial distribution with recorded occurrences in both hemispheres. We have examined isolated teeth of Cretoxyrhina and Cardabiodon from eastern Russia, Mangyshlak in Kazakhstan, and the Western Interior of the USA. The material indicates th

Infections in small children and their families - symptoms, consultations and antibioitcs

Bland de vuxna ledde 12% av symtomdagarna tInfectious symptoms in infants and their families are common. With rising age the number of symptom day decreases, but increases again for the parents of infants. About one quarter of the symptom days lead to absence from daycare among the infants but the social remuneration system was used by the parents only in 1/3 of the absence days. Among the adults 12% of the symptoms days lead to absence fr

Antimony in brake pads - a carcinogenic component?

Antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) is used as a lubricant in friction material. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed Sb in 3/3 disc brake pads (range 41,000-46,000 mg/kg) and in 2/2 disc brake dust samples (21,000 and 17,000 mg/kg) from trucks. Considerably lower concentrations were found in drum brake pads (3/5, 59-6400 mg/kg) and in drum brake dust (4/18, 78-2800 mg/kg). Other toxic metals were also det

Increased Rho activation and PKC-mediated smooth muscle contractility in the absence of caveolin-1.

Abstract in UndeterminedCaveolae are omega-shaped membrane invaginations that are abundant in smooth muscle cells. Since many receptors and signaling proteins co-localize with caveolae, these have been proposed to integrate important signaling pathways. The aim of this study was to test whether RhoA/Rho-kinase and protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated Ca2+ sensitization depends on caveolae using caveoli

Low levels of nasal nitric oxide (NO) correlate to impaired mucociliary function in the upper airways

Findings in previous studies have suggested nitric oxide (NO) to be a regulator of mucociliary activity in the upper airways. The aim of the present investigation was to study whether a correlation exists between the nasal NO concentration and mucociliary function in patients suffering from respiratory tract diseases such as chronic sinusitis or recurrent pneumonia. Nasal NO was measured with a ch
