Variability in the G3 domain content of bovine aggrecan from cartilage extracts and chondrocyte cultures

The content of the globular domains G1, G2 and G3 on the core protein of high-density (A1D1) aggrecan isolated from newborn and mature bovine cartilage and from cultures of bovine chondrocytes was examined. Quantitation based on the 220 nm absorbance of tryptic marker peptides from each domain isolated by reversed-phase HPLC showed that while the content of G1 and G2 was essentially the same for a

Simulations of the glaciation of a frontal mixed-phase cloud with the Explicit Microphysics Model

Simulations with the Explicit Microphysics Model (EMM) of a case of lightly precipitating, glaciated stratiform cloud are presented. This frontal cloud was observed by the UK Met Office C-130 aircraft and the dual-polarization radar at Chilbolton in southern England. The Hallett-Mossop (H-M) process was found to cause extremely high number concentrations of crystal columns of up to almost 1000 1(-

Low-latency parallel transport in anonymous peer-to-peer overlays

The paper presents a design and discusses configuration aspects of an overlay transport protocol based on an idea of the peer-to-peer direct and anonymous distribution overlay (P2PRIV). We estimate a secure configuration of the protocol and examine a correlation between the P2PRIV’s anonymous path lengths and latency. An increase of the path lengths speaks strongly in favor of the parallel solutio

On the degree of vertices in a shadow volume silhouette

In shadow volume rendering, the shadow volume silhouette edges are used to create primitives that model the shadow volume. A common misconception is that the vertices on such silhouettes can only be connected to two silhouette edges, i.e., have degree two. Furthermore, some believe that such a vertex can have any degree. In this short note, we present a geometric proof that shows that the degree o

Experimental and numerical determination of the hygroscopic warping of cross-laminated solid wood panels

The moisture-induced warping of three-layered cross-laminated solid wood panels made of Norway spruce was studied. The panels were exposed to different climate conditions at 65% and 100% relative humidity at the two panel faces. The results showed increasing cup deformation with an increasing relative thickness of the outer layers. The annual growth ring orientation was found to have a significant

When is small beautiful?

The basic bound on the generalisation error of a PAC learner makes the assumption that a consistent hypothesis exists. This makes it appropriate to apply the method only in the case where we have a guarantee that a consistent hypothesis can be found, something that is rarely possible in real applications. The same problem arises if we decide not to use a hypothesis unless its error is below a pres

Superfluidity in a gas of strongly interacting bosons

We consider small systems of bosonic atoms rotating in a toroidal trap. Using the method of exact numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian, we examine the transition from the Bose-Einstein condensed state to the Tonks-Girardeau state. The system supports persistent currents in a wide range between the two limits, even in the absence of Bose-Einstein condensation.

Soft tissue leiomyosarcoma. A population-based epidemiologic and prognostic study of 48 patients, including cellular DNA content

BACKGROUND. Leiomyosarcoma of soft tissue is a rare tumor. There are different opinions regarding epidemiology and prognosis. METHODS. Epidemiology and prognosis were analyzed in a consecutive, population-based series of 48 patients with subcutaneous and deep-seated leiomyosarcoma in the extremities and trunk wall with a complete follow-up of a minimum of 3 years. Cutaneous tumors were not include

Hemiarthroplasty or osteosynthesis in cervical hip fractures: matched-pair analysis in 892 patients

Our aim was to compare hemiarthroplasty (HA) and osteosynthesis (OS) in the treatment of cervical hip fractures using matched-pair analysis, especially with regard to different age groups. Data concerning all hip fractures (excluding pathological fractures) at the University Hospitals of Lund in Sweden, where osteosynthesis with LIH hook-pins was used exclusively, and of Oulu in Finland, using mai

A New Method to Make 2-D Wear Measurements Less Sensitive to Projection Differences of Cemented THAs

Wear curves from individual patients often show unexplained irregular wear curves or impossible values (negative wear). We postulated errors of two-dimensional wear measurements are mainly the result of radiographic projection differences. We tested a new method that makes two-dimensional wear measurements less sensitive for radiograph projection differences of cemented THAs. The measurement error

Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein inhibits endotoxin-induced vascular nitric oxide synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) up-regulates inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in blood vessels during septic shock. This promotes the production of nitric oxide (NO), leading to dilation of the vessels. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of the LPS-binding endogenous antibiotic bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) on the action of LPS on the blo

Nesterenkonia aethiopica sp nov., an alkaliphilic, moderate halophile isolated from an Ethiopian soda lake

T Strain DSM 17733(T), isolated from the shore of Lake Abjata in Ethiopia, is a heterotrophic, alkaliphilic, moderately halophilic, Gram-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-endospore-forming bacterium. The organism grows optimally at 30-37 degrees C, pH 9 and 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Analysis of the cell wall showed the presence of murein of the type L-Lys-Gly-L-Glu, variation A4 alpha. The G + C c

Quartz content and the quartz-to-plagioclase ratio determined by X-ray diffraction: a proxy for ice rafting in the northern North Atlantic?

Many paleoceanographic reconstructions of the glacial North Atlantic include estimates of iceberg discharge, which are based on the variable abundance of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) in deep-sea sediments. IRD abundance is most often determined by the mechanical separation and painstaking counting of terrigenous particles larger than a specified threshold grain size, typically 150 mum. Here we presen

Regulation of Osteoblast Differentiation - A Novel Function for FGF-8.

Several members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family have an important role in the development of skeletal tissues. FGF-8 is widely expressed in the developing skeleton, but its function there has remained unknown. We asked in this study whether FGF-8 could have a role in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to an osteoblastic lineage. Addition of FGF-8 to mouse bone marrow cultur
