Where to go when nobody´s home? - Adaptation to climate change and migration in Sweden’s third largest city, Malmö.
This study has investigated the adaptation ability among Swedish public institutions with the intention of contributing with an understanding of the governmental and institutional approach on how they are supposed to manage potential larger-scale relocation due to climate change in the not so far reaching future. My specific research objective was to study the case of adaptation ability among ins
Who Did You Say You Were? : A case study of character creation through language usage in Takarazuka plays
This case study of the effectiveness of the usage of Japanese role language uses character portrayals from performances by the theatre company Takarazuka Revue to investigate how native Japanese speakers perceive characters solely based upon lexical or grammatical cues in spoken language. With a foundation in Satoshi Kinsui’s description of role language and Christopher Vogler’s character archetyp
Changing Energy Supply Through Urban Sustainability Experiments: A comparative case study of Sonderborg and Copenhagen, Denmark.
Climate governance is diversifying as the traditional multilateral approach is complemented by more autonomous and experimental reactions. The aim of this thesis is to enquire into this new kind of climate governance. Through a comparative case study of two urban climate change experiments in Denmark, the thesis first explores mechanisms that aid and hinder the achievement of experiment objectives
The Quality of Financial Disclosure and its Implications on Stock Prices for Credit Downgraded Firms
Over the last decade, financial disclosure and its impact on equity markets has increasingly become an area of interest. Firms suffering from poor operating performance have been shown to disclose bias earnings estimates as a means of evading negative market reactions. In this thesis, we attempt to discern whether managers purposefully bias their earnings estimates in periods of credit quality det
Tax-based Capital Controls’ Efficacy at Affecting the Composition of Foreign Capital
This paper investigates whether countries can use tax-based forms of capital controls to affect the share of foreign direct investment (FDI) relative to debt. Doing so might enable a country to influence capital-recipient countries’ foreign capital towards FDI and away from debt. The empirical model and dependent, explanatory, and control variables have been drawn from existing literature and have
“I Got Too Much Fashion Sense For One Gender” : En kvalitativ diskursanalys om dragqueens presentation av femininitet i modefotografi.
This bachelor thesis studies fashion photographs where drag queens are participating as models. It was aimed to explore how their function in the fashion context can be seen. Three cases from 2016, all from a North American context are used for the study. “Caged Heat” from Interview Magazine no. 3, 2016 where Violet Chachki can be seen as one of the models. “Walk in the Wild Side” from ODDA Magazi
Development of a three dimensional (3D) cell culturing system from electrospun polycaprolactone fibers for breast cancer cells and human dermal fibroblasts co-cultivation
Men i
Dialysis patients’ hospital readmission prediction using artificial neural networks
Using pictures of patient data to predict hospitalization Predicting patient hospitalization has been a major objective of health care providers due to its impact on patients’ life quality. These benefits are demonstrated in driving down health care cost in addition to lowering mortality rates and complications due to unplanned hospitalizations. Like any other patients, dialysis patients experi
Quality of Life Impacts from Type 1 Diabetes: Evidence from Two Studies in Northern Sweden
Purpose: To estimate the impact upon Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) associated with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), both with and without associated diabetic complications, for enabling calculation of utility values – Quality of Life Weights (QLW) – for populations with T1DM. Method: Two cohorts from Northern Sweden, one of T1DM patients and one of a general population, were given survey
Are Restriction Enzymes Recognition Sites Underrepresented in the Organisms That Host Them?
The restriction modification enzyme system is a vital bacterial defense system against invading phages. Restriction modification system consists of a restriction enzyme and a methyltransferase enzyme that work in a complementary fashion to cut foreign DNA and at the same time methylates and protects host DNA. Recognition site sequence is usually specific for each restriction enzyme. Restriction Re
Does clothianidin affect solitary bee foraging time and reproduction?
CPV-connected ES for Multiple Services
In this master thesis, the topic of energy storage connected to concentrator photovoltaic power production is assessed. The end goal is to propose the optimal energy storage technology and its sizing, regarding power and energy capacity, for an existing concentrator photovoltaic power plant. The plant is located in the province of Algarve in Portugal, the installed production capacity is 4.5 MW, a
Musical Instrument Categorization using Spectral- and Cepstral Analysis
This thesis suggests and tests two methods for categorizing instruments in a musical signal. The first method involves spectral analysis and the magnitude spectrum, analysing the structure of pitches and overtones and how the amplitude of those changes over time. The second method involves cepstrum analysis and especially the, for speech recognition popular method computing the Mel Frequency Cepst
Multilocus Phylogeography of Reed Buntings
In order to understand how the Pleistocene glacial cycles have influenced the diversification in the Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) subspecies complex, we conducted a multilocus phylogeographic study. We analysed DNA sequences from 32 breeding populations, covering the species’ Palearctic distribution, and used population genetics, phylogenetic and coalescent methods to uncover genetic struct
The Impact of HIV Prevalence on Schooling Achievement in Sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence from the SACMEQ Assessments
This paper investigates the impact of HIV prevalence on schooling achievement. By associating data of schooling test results, for seven countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with regional measures of HIV prevalence for 70 different regions, I find evidence that a general increase in HIV prevalence of about 1%, lowers general test score results of about 1% of a standard deviation from the mean. Endogene
Genome-wide Profiling of the Histone Modification Status in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
Children affected by the multisystem genetic disorder Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome look prematurely aged, suffer from elderly-related conditions and die during adolescence due to cardiovascular complications. The cause of the disease is single point gain-of-function mutations in the LMNA gene, which encodes the lamin A and lamin C proteins, major components of the nuclear lamina. These mut
Acoustofluidic Separation of Cardiomyocytes
Heart failure is one of the most common reasons for death in the modern society. As the field of tissue engineering is evolving, cardiac patches as treatment for suffering patients holds future promise. However, methods for efficient purification of cardiomyocytes from biopsies are lacking, hindering the development of such solutions. Here a novel method for separation of cardiomyocytes in a micro
Dynamic interferometry and high-speed imaging
At the Department of Biomedical Engineering work has been done on micro- dispensers - micro-mechanical devices used for handling extremely small volumes of fluid, which is used in the pharmacological industry. The main part of these devices is a membrane which moves distances on the order of micrometers, and vibrates with natural modes at frequencies over 10kHz, and there was a desire to image the
On PGC1alpha and mitochondrial status in parental and chemoresistant ovarian cancer cell lines
Epithelial ovarian carcinoma is a gynecological cancer with the highest death incidence worldwide. It is treated with surgery and chemotherapeutic drugs: platinum or taxane. However, around 80% of patients have disease progression into more aggressive and chemoresistant cancer. Mitochondria are structures inside both normal and cancer cells which are central to the cell´s metabolism by supplying e
