The GPCR Action Group

PI: Albert Salehi The antiology of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes is complex and involves the interaction between both genetic and environmental factors (also including nutritional and metabolic signals). It has been known for at long time that dysfunction fo pancreatic islets cell (α-, β- and δ-cell) is a critical factor in the development and progression of these diseases. One of the larg

Therapy

New drug targetsWe have in the different sections tested a number of pathways as putative new drug targets including exploring the role of TXNIP for the development of glucotoxicity in β-cells, muscle and kidney and the role of glucokinase in the β-cells. We have also explored the role of Ncf1 in thymus mediated control of tolerance. Potentially, all studied pathways can include regulatory steps w

Assessment of a tumour growth model for virtual clinical trials of breast cancer screening

In the project I am involved with we are trying to simulate breast and breast cancer tumours. The simulations can assist and support clinical research, by predicting treatment plans and diagnostic tools in breast cancer screening. In addition, we try to assess the growth rate of tumours in women in Sweden, in order to identify which tumours that are less aggressive and where unnecessary interventi

Simulating mechanical imaging data through use of virtual clinical trials

The idea in this project is that malignant tumours can be distinguished from benign lesions and normal tissue using "mechanical imaging". Mechanical imaging of the breast is done by measuring the stress at the breast surface as the breast is compressed. Malignant tumours are generally stiffer than normal, benign breast tissue and will result in a higher stress at the breast surface. Knowing which

Person-centered radiography in cancer screening and development of radiographic examinations in medical imaging.

My research embraces a broad range of research projects for the development of person-centered radiography in cancer screening and for the standardization of diagnostic methods in medical imaging. The projects focus on the individual's perspective in health care and covers areas as follows: 1) evaluation of patient-reported outcomes in cancer screening, 2) development and validation of person-cent

Breast mechanical imaging

In a pioneering project, we are using pressure sensors to investigate and improve breast imaging. Mechanical imaging can be described as using pressure sensors to investigate the surface pressure of a compressed object. From the surface pressure, or stress, the local stiffness can be estimated. This is both useful and convenient in breast imaging: the breast is compressed during mammography, and b

Artificial intelligence in breast imaging

With a unique database of images we are investigating the use of artificial intelligence in breast imaging. Progress in Artificial Intelligence – AI – is rapid in many medical fields. In breast imaging, AI has mainly been used to improve CAD – computer assisted detection. Traditional CAD indicates suspicious areas on the mammogram, but is ineffective in screening as excessive marks distract reader
