A new type of LED light could bring significant efficiency gains

Researchers at Lund University have developed a new type of light-emitting diode based on thin branched nanowires, which could offer significantly higher efficiency and lower production costs than current technology. By controlling where in the structure the light is generated, the researchers have reduced the losses that would otherwise limit the amount of light that can be utilised. In the mater

Lund to host Nordic UNESCO meeting

This week, the Nordic UNESCO meeting is being held in Lund. One reason the meeting is happening here is Lund’s four UNESCO connections, including the Ravensbrück Archive, which was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2025. Last year was something of a milestone year for Lund’s UNESCO affiliations. The Ravensbrück archive at Lund University Library was added to the Memory of the World

More injuries following the policy change of body-checking in women’s ice hockey – but the players are positive about the change

Four years after body-checking was introduced, have injury rates in Swedish women’s ice hockey changed? Yes, markedly. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have now been able to show that, in the short term, the number of insurance claims almost doubled. In 2022, body-checking became permissible in the SDHL, the top-flight Swedish women’s ice hockey league. Sweden was thus the first country in

Thousands of new findings contribute to a global virus map

An extensive study has mapped RNA viruses in a large number of cities around the world. The researchers identified nearly 55,000 different types of virus, the vast majority of which had never been observed before. The virus atlas could be useful in both biological risk assessment and crime scene investigations.  Surprisingly little is known about how virus populations are distributed across the pl

Clothes as a means of power

Embroidered codpieces, army-inspired t-shirts and casual trainers. Using clothing to reinforce one’s political stance is nothing new. That is the view of fashion historian Emma Severinsson from Lund University. Angela Merkel achieved the unusual feat of combining uniform-like outfits with a riot of colour. Her characteristic ensembles and trouser suits, created by designer Bettina Schoenbach, were

Unexpected findings on fatigue in teenage girls

Recently published findings from Lund University in Sweden challenge a common assumption about the causes of fatigue in teenage girls. The researchers found no link between iron deficiency and fatigue, even though iron deficiency was very common in the group. By contrast, heavy periods, skipping meals and daily nicotine use were linked to higher levels of self-reported tiredness in the group. We h

Project to investigate future of Europe’s sandy beaches

About two-thirds of Europe’s sandy beaches have roads, quays, boardwalks and hard coastal defences made of stone and concrete so close by, that they can no longer adapt naturally to rising sea levels. Now, an EU-project coordinated by Lund University has been awarded just over SEK 100 million to analyse how nature can become part of the solution. “It is easy to think that hard coastal defences are

Machine learning drives drug repurposing for neuroblastoma

Using machine learning and a large volume of data on genes and existing drugs, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have identified a combination of statins and phenothiazines that is particularly promising in the treatment of the aggressive form of neuroblastoma. The results from experimental trials showed slowing of tumour growth and higher survival rates. Read more at lu.se.

The Conversation: How AI ‘sees’ the world – what happened when we trained a deep learning model to identify poverty

To most effectively deliver aid to alleviate poverty, you have to know where the people most in need are. In many countries, this is often done with household surveys. But these are usually infrequent and cover limited locations.Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have created a step change in how to measure poverty and other human development indicators. Our team has used a type of AI

Johan Axhamn represented Lund at the Swedish Riksdag’s seminar on AI

Every year, the Swedish Riksdag organises a research day. This year the theme was “artificial intelligence”. The aim is to give Members of Parliament the opportunity to gain new knowledge and to highlight the value of science for politics, democracy, and parliamentary decision-making. This year, Johan Axhamn, senior lecturer in Business Law here at LUSEM, was the sole representative from Lund Univ

AI is better than humans at analysing long-term ECG recordings

In patients with symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, dizziness, or fainting, or in individuals that physicians suspect may have atrial fibrillation, many days of ECGs may be required for diagnosis – “long-term ECG recordings”. These recordings must then undergo a time-consuming and human resource-intensive review to identify heart rhythm abnormalities. In a large international study, researcher

AI-supported breast cancer screening – new results suggest even higher accuracy

New research results now published from Lund University’s MASAI trial are even better than the initial findings from last year: AI-supported breast screening detected 29 per cent more cases of cancer compared with traditional screening. More invasive cancers were also clearly detected at an early stage using AI. Now the final part of the research study will focus on breast cancer missed by screeni
