The effect of stellar-mass black holes on the structural evolution of massive star clusters

We present the results of realistic N-body modelling of massive star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, aimed at investigating a dynamical origin for the radius-age trend observed in these systems. We find that stellar-mass black holes, formed in the supernova explosions of the most massive cluster stars, can constitute a dynamically important population. If a significant ensemble is retained (her

An analysis of two-dimensional pilot-symbol assisted modulation for OFDM

In this paper we analyze two-dimensional (2D) pilot-symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) for wireless orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). 2D-PSAM has been suggested for wireless OFDM by several authors and is included in a preliminary draft of the standard for European digital video broadcast. We generalize the analysis of single-carrier PSAM to the 2D time-frequency lattice of OFDM. W

Towards synthesis of speaker age: A perceptual study with natural, synthesized and resynthesized stimuli.

As a first step towards synthesis of speaker age the hypothesis that spectral cues may be more important for age perception than F0 and duration was tested in a pilot listening experiment with male speaker stimuli consisting of natural, synthesized and resynthesized isolated words. Results indicate that spectral information is dominant over pitch as cues for age. Slow speech rate also seems to be

Truthers: the 911 Truth Movement and the Culture of Conspiracy

This paper describes the beliefs and practices of the 911 truth movement, who believe that the World Trade Center collapse was caused by a "controlled demolition" and not by the hijacked airplanes. They try to expose the lie of the "official conpsiracy theory" of hijackings. The "truthers" have a coherent belief system, virtual communities and demonstrations, and enemies such as the mainstream med

Global Proteome Survey -Transforming antibody-based affinity proteomics into a global discovery platform

However, due to the complexity displayed by a proteome and inherent limitations associated with current methodologies, proteomic analyses often result in incomplete coverage and inconsistent measurem

Observation of a Core-Excited E4 Isomer in 98Cd

A core-excited I = (12+) spin-gap isomer was identified in 98Cd in an experiment at EUROBALL IV. It was found to feed the known I = (8+) seniority isomer by an E4 transition. Half-lives of T1/2 = 0.23() µs and 0.17() µs were measured for the two states at Ex = 6635 keV and 2428 keV, respectively. From the excitation energy of the core-excited isomer a 100Sn shell gap of 6.46(15) MeV is inferred. T

A distributed scheme for resolution of the single-path routing problem

The goal of the paper is to present a distributed scheme to resolving a single path routing problem in multidomain networks. The global problem is formulated as a mixed-integer program (MIP) and approached by means of branch-and-price (B&P). Problems associated with a B&P tree nodes are decomposed using the Dantzig-Wolfe method to a set of domain subproblems coordinated by a single master
