Utmaningarna mot demokratins skola : Den svenska lärarkåren, nazismen och sovjetkommunismen 1933-1945

The Swedish teaching profession, Nazism and Soviet Communism from 1933 to 1945 The “Democratic School” was a concept that Swedish teachers used regularly to describe the school that they had participated in building up. In the interwarperiod, the Democratic School was confronted with two major challenges, i.e. German Nazism and Soviet Communism. This thesis has, in a comparative form, investigate

Heredity in Parkinson's disease. From rare mutations to common genetic risk factors.

This study investigated genetic causes of Parkinson's disease (PD) and parkinsonism in southern Sweden. The extensive Lister Family with parkinsonism caused by duplications and triplications of the gene for alpha-synuclein (SNCA) was studied. Clinical, genetic and genealogical data were compiled and evaluated. Thirty-five family members with parkinsonism were identified. They share a characteristi

Nuclear shape isomers

We calculate potential-energy surfaces as functions of spheroidal (epsilon(2)), hexadecapole (epsilon(4)), and axial-asymmetry (gamma) shape coordinates for 7206 nuclei from A = 31 to A = 290. We tabulate the deformations and energies of all minima deeper than 0.2 MeV and of the saddles between all pairs of minima. The tabulation is terminated at N = 160. Our study is based on the FRLDM macroscopi

Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase in the liquid-crystalline phases of aqueous phytantriol: X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopic studies

The influence of Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (TLL) on the phase behaviour of liquid-crystalline phases of aqueous phytantriol as well as conformational changes of TLL entrapped in the cubic Q(230) phase have been studied by small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD), FT-Raman, and FT-IR techniques. It was found that the lipidic Q(230) Phase is able to accommodate up to 10 wt.% of TLL, and the tempera

Clinical Aspects of Pediatric Head Injury

De flesta av barnen har en så kallad lätt skallskada (ca 90 %)Traumatic head injury is one of the leading causes to severe morbidity and death among children. Specific and national management guidelines for pediatric head injuries are lacking in Sweden, and management routines are consequently based on adult guidelines or local guidelines. The objectives of this thesis were to investigate the current management of pediatric head injury in Sweden and to explo

Usefulness of Symptoms to Screen for Celiac Disease

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of symptoms and associated conditions among screening-detected celiac disease (CD) cases and non-CD children and to evaluate questionnaire-based case-finding targeting the general population. METHODS: In a population-based CD screening of 12-year-olds, children and their parents completed questionnaires on CD-associated symptoms and conditions before knowledge

Scandinavian experience in classical osteosarcoma Results of the SSG XIV protocol

Background and purpose The Scandinavian Sarcoma Group (SSG) XIV protocol was based upon the organisations experience from 3 previous osteosarcoma trials and was considered best standard of care for patients with extremity localised, non-metastatic osteosarcoma. We report the outcome of this protocol. Patients and methods From March 2001 to April 2005, 63 patients recruited from 10 centres in Finla

Impact of Floods on Livelihoods and Vulnerability of Natural Resource Dependent Communities in Northern Ghana

Sub-Sahara Africa is considered to be most vulnerable to climate variability including flooding. The frequency and severity of floods in Northern Ghana over the last decade has increased considerably. Through qualitative modelling the paper explores the impact of floods on natural resource dependent communities in Northern Ghana. Simplified causal loop diagrams are used to conceptualise flood-indu

The misalignment cycle: Is the management of your supply chain aligned?

Purpose of this paper The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for describing and analyzing misalignments in supply chain management related to changes in supply chain structures, processes, and management components. Design/methodology/approach Based on the systems approach, a single-case study including several embedded cases from the same supply chain was deployed. This was done acc

Neutron reflection study of the interaction of the eukaryotic pore-forming actinoporin equinatoxin II with lipid membranes reveals intermediate states in pore formation.

Equinatoxin II (EqtII), a eukaryotic pore-forming toxin, lyses cell membranes through a mechanism involving the insertion of its N-terminal α-helix into the membrane. EqtII pore formation is dependent on sphingomyelin (SM), although cholesterol (Chol) and membrane microdomains have also been suggested to enhance its activity. We have investigated the mechanism of EqtII binding and insertion by usi

Team rehabilitation and health care utilization in chronic inflammatory arthritis patients

De vetenskapliga resultat som redovisas i avhandlingen visar i korthet på följandThe aim of this thesis was to study outcome and evaluation of rheumatological multidisciplinary team rehabilitation programmes in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis (CIA); rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and other spondyloarthritides, and to analyse health care utilization over the last decade in patients with RA. In Study I the outcome of an 18 da

Non-Legal Aspects of Legally Controlled Decision-Making. The failure of predictability in governing the 3G infrastructure development in Sweden

Predictability is a key function of law. When the application of law goes from being flexible to becoming unpredictable this key function is lost. This article shows how legal application can deviate from formal agreements and law, how legal predictability experiences a setback when other forces or values affect the decision making that is supposed to be strictly legally controlled. Non-legally ac

Odd-parity 100Sn Core Excitations

Odd-parity core excited states have been identified in two close neighbors of Sn-100: Pd-96 and Ag-97. This was done in an fusion-evaporation experiment, using a Ni-58 beam on a Sc-45 target. Even-parity core excited states in these nuclei are very well reproduced in large scale (LSSM) calculations in which particle-hole excitations are allowed with up to five g(9/2) protons and neutrons across th

Genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae for kinetic resolution of racemic bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione

Whole cells of the genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain TMB4100 (1% PGI, YMR226c) were Used as the biocatalyst for the kinetic resolution of racemic bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione rac-1. The yeast's phosphoglucose isomerase activity was decreased, and the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase encoded by YMR226c was overexpressed. This reduced the demand for the glucose to regenerat

Analysis of the wake dynamics of stiff and flexible cantilever beams using POD and DMD

The wake flow behind a cantilever beam of quadratic cross-section at a Reynolds number of 50,000 is investigated using detailed simulations. Two cases are considered, the first one using a stiff beam and the second one with a beam allowing for elastic deformation due to the hydrodynamic forces. The flow is simulated using an implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) approach in OpenFOAM and the struct

The community nurse as consultant – a skills development project. In consequence of the municipality reform and the consequent sliding of services from hospital to primary healthcare, a Danish municipal wished to strengthen their community nurses professional competences, fellow-feeling and collegiate spirit by taking starting point in their newly developed ‘profile for community nurses’. This art

Detecting microRNA activity from gene expression data

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding to the messenger RNA (mRNA) of protein coding genes. They control gene expression by either inhibiting translation or inducing mRNA degradation. A number of computational techniques have been developed to identify the targets of miRNAs. In this study we used predicted miRNA-gene interactions to analyse mRNA

The Influence of Tool Tolerances on the Gear Quality of a Gear Manufactured by an Indexable Insert Hob

Advances in gear hobbing are driven to give higher cutting speeds, longer tool life and higher feed rates. Recently, a new type of hob with carbide inserts has been introduced with benefits in all these conditions compared to regrindable high speed steel hobs. However, with this kind of hob, new challenges occur due to positional errors of the cutting edges when mounted on the tool. These errors i

A high-throughput pathology approach for further insight into the role of RBM3 as a biomarker of prognosis and chemotherapy response in human cancer

Cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease and there is a great need for new early diagnostic, prognostic and treatment predictive biomarkers in order to improve patient outcomes. The RNA-binding motif protein 3, RBM3, is an emerging candidate biomarker of favourable prognosis and treatment response in several types of
