Brainstem and thalamic projections from a craniovascular sensory nervous centre in the rostral cervical spinal dorsal horn of rats.

To examine the ascending projections from the headache-related trigeminocervical complex in rats, biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) was injected into the ventrolateral dorsal horn of segments C1 and C2, a region previously demonstrated to receive input from sensory nerves in cranial blood vessels. Following injections into laminae I-II, BDA-labelled terminations were found bilaterally in several nu

Confirmation that the JAHK antigen is associated with the rG haplotype

Anti-JAHK, an antibody directed toward a low-incidence antigen in the Rh system, was detected during routine antibody identification in a male donor who had no history of transfusion. Examples of anti-JAHK have been found in sera containing multiple antibodies to low-incidence antigens. The first report of anti-JAHK was in 1995 and described the association of the JAHK antigen with the rG haplotyp

A phase-shifting PLL frequency offseter

A phase-shifting PLL frequency offsetter has been developed for use in the comparison of near-equal frequencies by phase-time recordings. The input frequency is shifted by means of a phase-shifting phase-locked loop. Time-linear phase shifting is simply obtained by inserting an RC link in the loop. Continuous operation is obtained by polarity switching of the capacitor and the phase detector at su

Carriership of factor v leiden and evolutionary selection advantage.

Historically, lethal exsanguinations and severe infections have been two major causes of maternal death. Gene mutations that lower the risk of profuse hemorrhage or severe infections would give a survival advantage. A single mutation of coagulation factor V, known as FV Leiden (FVL), can be such a beneficial mutation. FVL is common among Caucasians and today confers an increased risk of thromboemb

Att läsa bibeln som om Gud inte fanns

Discussion of the why and how of keeping up the agnostic (not atheistic) character of academic exegesis, and the effects of having an insider or outsider perspective (bias) on the matters explored in this discipline.

Effects of gut microbiota on obesity and atherosclerosis via modulation of inflammation and lipid metabolism

Recent studies have revealed a close relationship between inflammatory and metabolic pathways, and inflammation is now recognized to have a major role in obesity and metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. The human body is home to a large number of distinct microbial communities, with the densest population in the distal gut (the gut microbiota). Bacteria have long been

Search for familial clustering of multiple myeloma with any cancer.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a disease of immunoglobulin producing plasma cells which reside mainly in the bone marrow. Family members of MM patients are at a risk of MM but whether other malignancies are in excess in family members is not established and is the aim of this study. MM patients (24,137) were identified from the Swedish Cancer Registry from years 1958-2012. Relative risks (RRs) were calc

High levels of the adhesion molecule CD44 on leukemic cells generate acute myeloid leukemia relapse after withdrawal of the initial transforming event.

Multiple genetic hits are detected in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). To investigate this further, we developed a tetracycline-inducible mouse model of AML, in which the initial transforming event, overexpression of HOXA10, can be eliminated. Continuous overexpression of HOXA10 is required to generate AML in primary recipient mice, but is not essential for maintenance of the leukemia.

Abstract in Uncoded languages A kooperatív játékelmélet egyik legjelentősebb eredménye, hogy számos konfliktushelyzetben stabil megoldást nyújt. Ez azonban csak statikus és determinisztikus környezetben alkalmazható jól. Most megmutatjuk a mag egy olyan kiterjesztését, a gyenge szekvenciális magot, mely képes valós, dinamikus, bizonytalan környezetben is eligazítást nyújtani. A megoldást a csődját

Strain in nursing care of people with dementia: Nurses' experience in Australia, Sweden and United Kingdom.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore nurses' experience of strain in dementia care. Method: Focus groups were held with 35 nurses in Sweden, Australia and UK, who care for people with dementia. The discussions were tape-recorded and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The nurses described the complexity of their situation and referred to environmental factors such as

Automatic classification of accent and dialect type: results from southern Swedish

This paper is about automatic classification of dialect and accent type in Swedish. We used disyllabic words from the speech material of the Swedia 2000 dialect project in order to build a statistical prediction model. The model uses different parameters extracted from F0 contours of the words. Classification of dialect is performed for the features 'province' and 'village', whereas classification

Many genetically defined ABO subgroups exhibit characteristic flow cytometric patterns.

BACKGROUND: A flow cytometric method for detection of low levels of A/B antigen had been developed previously in our laboratory. The aim of this study was to investigate if this approach could be utilized to characterize different ABO subgroups and constitute a useful tool in a reference laboratory. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood samples causing ABO discrepancies (n = 94) by routine serology were

On-off Control of an Active Load for Power System Damping - Theory and Field Test

Controlled resistive loads can contribute to damping of electro-mechanical oscillations. This paper presents an on-off damping controller for a single machine system. It was used at a field test in Southern Sweden to damp oscillations of a 0.9 MW hydro power generator. The controller used estimated machine frequency as input and controlled a 20 kW resistive load via thyristor switches. The field m
