This thesis studies stereotypes of Sweden and Swedishness in the Finnish press 1918–1939. It maps the genealogy of the images and analyzes the use of stereotypes. Equality and the Taxable Unit in Income Tax

For a long time, married women were treated differently from married men in personal income tax acts (PITA’s) around the world. The Netherlands was no exception to this rule. The PITA reflected the political, religious and legal situation, but at the same time was often behind on developments in those areas. The current Dutch semi-individual tax system in which single earner families pay more tax

A précis of 'The unbalanced hierarchy', a report from the EU-funded project 'Thus far – and further'

'The unbalanced hierarchy' addresses equal opportunities in academia. One of the key issues we face is that women are not being absorbed into the research community. Birgitta Odén, emeritus professor of history at the University of Lund, laid out the problems in her study 'Ju högre, desto färre' ['The higher you go, the fewer there are'] (Odén 1996). The phenomenon has also been described as 'a le

Every year, many women are exposed to sexual offenses. The majority are milder crimes but in the past 40 years the number of reported rapes has doubled tenfold, meanwhile the number of convictions has stayed the same. Rape is a topic that raises strong emotions and the effect is not alleviated by the cases where the perpetrators are acquitted

I svensk rätt finns inget straffbud som uttryckligen tar siktThe term “economic violence” is a concept that is relatively unfamiliar to many, which only in recent years has begun to find its way into the media and the general social debate. Many researchers regard economic violence as a very serious issue and, above all, as a major risk that may cause women that are victims of domestic violence to stay in a violent relationship. In Swedish law, there are n

Repainting the Rainbow: A Postcolonial Analysis on the Politics of the LGBTQ Movement in Colombo, Sri Lanka

LGBTQ issues have been mainstreamed in media and academic literature, especially in countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, where homosexuality has been said to be criminalized through the commonly known “sodomy laws”. This has fueled an international social movement, led by Western human rights organizations, with cultural, political and economic goals seeking to advance LGBTQ rights globally.

Ruins of Resilience : Imaginaries and Materiality Imagineered and Embedded in Civil Defence Architecture

This chapter examines ruin towns: civil defence training grounds that replicated urban war zones. The ruins provided a stage for enacting nuclear war, where the merely imagined was given a tangible expression. The chapter sketches the transnational extension-by-invitation of a British model of ruins to Denmark, and through architectural and historical analysis, it asks how it was re-embedded into
