Telomere length, telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter mutations, and melanoma risk

Telomere repeats at chromosomal ends, critical for genomic integrity, undergo age-dependent attrition and telomere length has been associated with different disorders including cancers. In this study, based on 1469 patients and 1158 healthy controls, we show a statistically significant (P = 6 × 10-10 ) association between increased telomere length and melanoma risk. Mendelian randomization, using

The impact of a DCV-system on the IAQ, energy use, and moisture safety in apartments - a case study

A novel DCV-system controls the air-change rate for each apartment in multifamily buildings based on two indoor air parameters: 1) the moisture load (supply), and 2) volatile organic compounds. With a central fan, but decentralized control boxes placed outside each apartment, the system controls the air-change rate for each apartment. This paper’s main aim is to determine the potential of this DCV

Investigating the dominant regions of the phase space associated with cc production relevant for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux

A detailed mapping of the dominant kinematical domains contributing to the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at high neutrino energies is presented by studying their sensitivity to the cuts on several kinematical variables crucial for charm production in cosmic ray scattering in the atmosphere. This includes the maximal center-of-mass energy for proton-proton scattering, the longitudinal momentum f

A practical roadmap for the digital transformation of urban water systems – using insights from a Swedish utility to chart the path forward

Urban water systems are facing growing challenges, including climate change and aging assets. Digital transformation presents opportunities to address these issues. However, water utilities often encounter barriers such as fragmented initiatives, organizational inertia, and lack of systems interoperability, limiting the scalability and impact of digitalization efforts. This paper presents a strate

Almost monomial subalgebras of and their LAGBI bases

We investigate subalgebras of finite codimension in. In earlier work we have introduced a way of describing such subalgebras in terms of their so called (subalgebra) spectrum and a set of conditions for subalgebra membership that can be expressed by evaluating polynomials and their derivatives in points of the spectrum only. In this paper we focus on subalgebras with a single element in their spec

Asymptotic performance of woven graph codes

Constructions of woven graph codes based on constituent block and convolutional codes are studied. It is shown that within the random ensemble of such codes based on s-partite, s-uniform hypergraphs, where s depends only on the code rate, there exist codes satisying the Varshamov-Gilbert (VG) and the Costello lower bound on the minimum distance and the free distance, respectively.

Den statistThe aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between social identity and personal attitude towards climate-friendly behaviour and the climate crisis. More specifically, the aim was to investigate whether strong identification with seven different social identities and ascribed group attitude correlates with personal attitude. Two-hundred and sixty-four persons (N=264) participated

Combined production of bioethanol and biogas from wheat straw

Large fractions of the production cost come from the raw material and the energy consumed in the distillation. Therefore it is desirable to have a process that yields high concentration of ethanol and maximizes the utilization of the biomass. Wheat straw is a promising raw material for lignocellulosic eth

Enhancing Probability of Default Prediction: Non-Linear Modeling in Turbulent Economic Times

Mitt examensarbete fokuserar på att förbättra dessa förutsägelser genThis thesis investigates the application of spline regression models to predict the Probability of Default (PD) under varying macroeconomic conditions, exploring whether these models can enhance predictive accuracy over traditional linear models and compare favorably to XGBoost. The study analyses the non-linear dynamics between PD and key macroeconomic indicators within a Swedish small-sized corp

An Estimate of Parallel Trade’s Impact on Swedish Pharmaceutical Prices

The global pharmaceutical market has been the subject of considerable controversy in both the public and academic debate. Much of the controversy has centred around European price controls and the right of pharmaceutical manufacturers to independently set prices. This subject of this paper in one of the tools used by the EU governments control prices; namely parallel trade. The empirical research

Dichotomous Effects of Glypican-4 on Cancer Progression and Its Crosstalk with Oncogenes

Glypicans are linked to various aspects of neoplastic behavior, and their therapeutic value has been proposed in different cancers. Here, we have systematically assessed the impact of GPC4 on cancer progression through functional genomics and transcriptomic analyses across a broad range of cancers. Survival analysis using TCGA cancer patient data reveals divergent effects of GPC4 expression across

Simulating fluorine K -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of sulfur hexafluoride and the effect of dissociative dynamics

We report on a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), at different fluorine K-edge resonances of the SF6 molecule, and corresponding nonresonant x-ray emission. Previously measured polarization dependence in RIXS is reproduced and traced back to the local σ and π symmetry of the molecular orbitals and corresponding states involved in the RIXS process. Also electron-hole

Practical considerations for nonfactor-replacement therapies in the treatment of haemophilia with inhibitors

New therapeutic agents for haemophilia with inhibitors that are in development or already licensed are expected to provide transformative treatment options. Many of these new therapies are not based on simply replacing the missing factor; new strategies include bispecific antibody technology that mimics factor VIII coagulation function (emicizumab), and inhibition of anticoagulant proteins such as

Energy scaling in a compact bulk multi-pass cell enabled by Laguerre-Gaussian single-vortex beams

We report pulse energy scaling enabled by the use of Laguerre-Gaussian single-vortex (LG0,l) beams for spectral broadening in a sub-40 cm long Herriott-type bulk multi-pass cell. Beams with orders l=1−3 are generated by a spatial light modulator, which facilitates rapid and precise reconfiguration of the experimental conditions. 180 fs pulses with 610 uJ pulse energy are post-compressed to 44 fs u

Brigatinib, an anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitor, abrogates activity and growth in ALK-positive neuroblastoma cells, Drosophila and mice

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a tyrosine kinase receptor which has been implicated in numerous solid and hematologic cancers. ALK mutations are reported in about 5-7% of neuroblastoma cases but the ALK-positive percentage increases significantly in the relapsed patient population. Crizotinib, the first clinically approved ALK inhibitor for the treatment of ALK-positive lung cancer has had le

On the error correcting capability of convolutional codes: Old and new

A brief introduction to convolutional coding is given. The active distances are reviewed and shown to be an important tool for analyzing the error correcting capability of maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of convolutional codes when communicating over a binary symmetric channel (BSC). Due to memory and delay constraints in practical coding schemes, convolutional codes often are either terminated o

Laccase catalysed modification of lignin subunits and coupling to p-aminobenzoic acid

Laccase catalysed oxidation of syringyl and guaiacyl subunits of lignin and their modification with an aromatic amine, p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) were investigated. Laccase from Galerina sp. HC1 isolated earlier by us was used as the main catalyst, and Trametes versicolor laccase was used for comparison. Among the syringyl compounds, syringic acid and syringaldehyde were oxidised to 2,6-dimethoxy-

Characterization of allergens secreted by Anisakis simplex parasite: clinical relevance in comparison with somatic allergens

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic methods for the study of allergic reactions to Anisakis simplex (A.s.) based on whole-body extracts of the larva are clearly insufficient.
