Deglaciation pattern and dynamics in the Bolmen area, southwestern Sweden

Introduktion och bakgrund Weichselistidens recession från södra Sverige har diskuterats av olika geologer undeThe Late Weichselian deglaciation of an area in southwestern Sweden was reconstructed by geomorphological, sedimentological and lithostratigraphical methods. The morainic deposits were mapped and classified into three landsystems: Streamlined terrain, hummocky moraine and cover moraine. Streamlined terrain was assumed to have been formed subglacially by a wet-based ice sheet. Cover moraine was int

Komplexiteten i förhållandet mellan konceptuella strukturer och den språkliga formen är uppenbar på dThe aim of this thesis is to investigate the relation between intrasubjective mental representations – ‘conceptual structures’ – and their intersubjectively available material manifestation, in particular morphosyntactic representations. Such an investigation presupposes the analysis of not only extralinguistically established modules but also of structural levels that are inherent components of t

Svenska fjärrvärmebolags försäljningsstrategier i småhusområden

District heating is well expanded in the residential areas in Sweden, although not in detached house areas. Increased environmental concerns as well as steadily increasing electricity and oil prices make the detached houses sector a potential market for the district heating companies. District heating in low heat density areas is economically challenging for mainly two reasons: Firstly, constructi

Plasma carotenoids as biomarkers of intake of fruits and vegetables: ecological-level correlations in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the ability of a single 24-h dietary recall (24HDR) and food questionnaires (FQ) to predict plasma carotenoid levels at the ecological level by assessing the relationship between mean plasma carotenoid levels and mean intake of fruit and vegetables measured by 24HDR and FQ across 16 European regions. Design: A random subsample of 3089 subjects was inc

Nuclear friction and quantum mechanical diffusion

We study dissipative properties of the motion of a slow nuclear collective variable weakly coupled to a complex quantum environment formed by the fast nucleonic degrees of freedom. The fast quantum mechanical subsystem is treated within the random matrix approach, where the complexity of the nucleonic degrees of freedom's motion can be changed by a parameter from regular to fully chaotic. Classica

Characterization of GLP-1 effects on beta-cell function after meal ingestion in humans.

OBJECTIVE—Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is an incretin that augments insulin secretion after meal intake and is developed for treatment of type 2 diabetes. As a novel therapeutic agent, characteristics of its β-cell effects are important to establish. Previously, β-cell effects of GLP-1 have been characterized in humans during graded intravenous infusions of glucose, whereas its effects after mo

Overload control and performance evaluation in a Parlay/OSA environment

To increase the pace of development and deployment of new services and applications in telecommunication networks, new service architectures have been proposed. Parlay/OSA is one of the proposals that has aroused most attention. By providing network functionality via Application Program Interfaces (APIs), Parlay/OSA facilitates creation of telecommunication services and applications for independen

Isolated Bacillus subtilis HemY has coproporphyrinogen III to coproporphyrin III oxidase activity

Oxidation of coproporphyrinogen III to coproporphyrin III is found in extracts of Escherichia coli cells containing the Bacillus subtilis HemY protein (M. Hansson and L. Hederstedt, J. Bacteriol. 176, 5962-5970). We have analysed whether this activity is due to the heterologous expression system, since it in vivo would lead to disruption of the heme biosynthetic pathway. B. subtilis hemY was fused

Purification and characterization of chitinases from the nematophagous fungi Verticillium chlamydosporium and v. suchlasporium

Culture filtrates of the nematophagous fungi Verticillium chlamydosporium and V. suchlasporium growing on colloidal chitin showed increasing chitinolytic activity and production of two (32- and 43-kDa) main proteins. Maximum activity was found 18-20 days after inoculation, but V. suchlasporium always displayed higher activity. Zymography of such filtrates on carboxymethyl-chitin-Remazol brilliant

Sperm concentration in Latvian military conscripts as compared with other countries in the Nordic-Baltic area

Recent studies of semen quality in men from the general population gave rise to the hypothesis of an East-West gradient in semen quality in the Nordic-Baltic area, with the highest sperm counts in Estonia, Lithuania and Finland, and the lowest in Denmark (30% difference in mean concentration). Genetic, lifestyle-related and environmental factors - alone or in combination - were suggested to be res

Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance

We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, for

Luminosity measurement at ATLAS - Development, construction and test of scintillating fibre prototype detectors

We are reporting about a scintillating fibre tracking detector which is proposed for the precise determination of the absolute luminosity of the CERN LHC at interaction point 1 where the ATLAS experiment is located. The detector needs to track protons elastically scattered under mu rad angles in direct vicinity to the LHC beam. It is based on square shaped scintillating plastic fibres read out by
