Modeling of room fire growth - Combustible lining materials

A computational procedure has been developed to correlate the room fire test process and results from the proposed IS0 small scale laboratory tests. The analysis assumes that the full scale room fire test follows the proposed ASTM method, implying that the lining material covers ceiling and walls. The procedure requires that the heat release measurement response time of the test room is evaluated

Involutionary Growth in a Labour-Scarce Economy. A dialectic interpretation of the boom and bust of cocoa production in Ghana, c. 1890-1970

The use of the analytical tools of classic and neo-classic economics has played a significant role in the study of Africa’s economic history since the 1970s. In this paper, we summon this body of work under the paradigm of Smithian growth models. Although different in techniques and approaches, this work shares a use of markets as the organising principle of the study. The aim of this paper is to

Design of Voice Alarms-the Benefit of Mentioning Fire and the Use of a Synthetic Voice

Preliminary results from a study about voice alarms are presented in this paper. The purpose of the study is to explore both how messages should be worded and how they should be presented. The paper focuses on an introductory questionnaire study at an IKEA store and unannounced evacuation experiments at Lund University. The results of these activities suggest that it is preferable to mention the w

Privatisation of the IT Sector in Sweden

Författaren försöThe majority of research on privatisation has been driven by, inter alia, economics. Some economists have argued that private ownership introduces capital market pressures into inefficient state bureaucracies. Private property rights are expected to maximise the incentives for management to achieve a high level of production efficiency. The argument put forward in this research is that in so far a

Optimum beamformers for uniform circular arrays in a correlated signal environment

By virtue of their geometry, uniform circular arrays (UCAs) are ideally suited to provide 360 degrees of coverage in the azimuthal plane. However, in a correlated signal environment, the well-known technique of spatial smoothing to mitigate the signal cancellation effect as seen in an optimum beamformer will not work since this technique is applicable only to uniform linear arrays. We show how the

Benchmarking e-learning in higher education and beyond

Benchmarking is a powerful strategic tool used to assist decision makers to improve the quality and effectiveness of organisational processes. Even in Higher Education nowadays, benchmarking is used as a tool for quality enhancement. This paper explores the results from a study on international benchmarking on elearning in higher education. The study explicitly showed the value and impact of the m

Feedback Scheduling of Model Predictive Controllers

The paper presents some preliminaryresults on dynamic scheduling of model predictive controllers (MPCs).In an MPC, the control signal is obtained by on-line optimization of acost function, and the MPC task may experience very large variationsin execution time from sample to sample. Unique to this application, the cost function offers an explicit, on-line quality-of-servicemeasure for the task. Base

Design of resonant tunneling permeable base transistors

We evaluate the performance of resonant tunneling permeable base transistors (RT-PBTs) by numerical simulations. Since the current is limited by the barriers, a design with a low doping level around the embedded gate wires is chosen to improve the transconductance. We evaluate the influence of the various geometrical parameters, to optimize the design for high frequency operation. We obtain a perf

Competitive Advantage Through Packaging Design? Propositions for Supply Chain Effectiveness and Efficiency

Packaging is becoming increasingly important from a marketing as well as logistics perspective, particularly for actors in consumer product supply chains. However, the role of packaging in creating or contributing to the competitive advantage of a company or a whole supply chain is still unexplored to a large extent. This is even the case in businesses where research has shown the benefits of cons
