Mesial temporal tau is related to worse cognitive performance and greater neocortical tau load in amyloid-β–negative cognitively normal individuals

We examined whether mesial temporal (Me) tau relates to cognitive performance in 47 amyloid-β (Aβ)-negative, cognitively normal older adults (>60 years old). Me-tau was measured using [18F]flortaucipir–positron emission tomography standardized uptake value ratio. The effect of continuous and categorical (stratified at standardized uptake value ratio = 1.2 [21% Me-positive]) Me-tau on cognition (mi

Using the thermal mass of a building to reduce the magnitude of the peak power demand of the primary heating system : A whole building simulation with parametric analysis

The idea of using the thermal mass of a building to maintain a more constant indoor climate is not new. This particular propertyof a building, including its exterior envelope, plays an important part in the reduction of peak power demands, which is becomingan increasingly urgent issue for the heating energy suppliers. The latest smart-grid technology creates new opportunities wherecommunication be

In Vitro Gastrointestinal Digestion and Colonic Fermentation of High Dietary Fiber and Antioxidant-Rich Mango (Mangifera indica L.) "Ataulfo"-Based Fruit Bars

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a tropical fruit which is considered to be a source of dietary fiber (DF) and phenolic compounds (PCs). In this study, high DF mango-based fruit bars were developed from whole mango (peel and pulp). The bars were evaluated for their nutritional composition, the bioaccesibility of PCs during gastrointestinal digestion, and the PCs metabolites profile after in vitro co

Shifted equilibria of organic acids and bases in the aqueous surface region

Acid-base equilibria of carboxylic acids and alkyl amines in the aqueous surface region were studied using surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. Solutions of these organic compounds were examined as a function of pH, concentration and chain length to investigate the distribution of acid and base form in the surface region as compared to the aqueous

Postoperative paralytic ileus after cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy

Patients with peritoneal malignancy treated by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are prone to develop postoperative paralytic ileus (POI). POI is associated with significant increase in both morbidity and mortality. CRS and HIPEC commonly result in prolonged POI (PPOI). The objective was to clarify the extent of PPOI in patients treated by

On the Asymptotic Performance of Low-Complexity Decoded LDPC Codes with Constituent Hamming Codes

Hamming code-based LDPC (H-LDPC) block codes are obtained by replacing single parity-check codes in Gallager's LDPC codes with Hamming constituent codes. This paper investigates the asymptotic error-correcting capabilities of ensembles of random H-LDPC codes, used over the binary symmetric channel and decoded with a low-complexity hard-decision iterative decoding algorithm. The number of required

Enhanced Understanding of Structure-Function Relationships for Oxomanganese(IV) Complexes

A series of manganese(II) and oxomanganese(IV) complexes supported by neutral, pentadentate ligands with varied equatorial ligand-field strength (N3pyQ, N2py2I, and N4pyMe2) were synthesized and then characterized using structural and spectroscopic methods. On the basis of electronic absorption spectroscopy, the [MnIV(O)(N4pyMe2)]2+ complex has the weakest equatorial ligand field among a set of si

The anti-angiogenic peptide anginex greatly enhances Galectin-1 binding affinity for glycoproteins

Angiogenesis is a key event in cancer progression and therefore a promising target in cancer treatment. Galectin-1, a β-galactoside binding lectin, is up-regulated in the endothelium of tumors of different origin and has been shown to be the target for anginex, a powerful anti-angiogenic peptide with anti-tumor activity. Here we show that when bound to anginex, galectin-1 binds various glycoprotei

Twist extrusion plus spread extrusion = Spatial uniformity

Spread extrusion (SE), proposed by the first author, is a direct extrusion with spread and without elongation. SE does not change the cross-sections of a workpiece so it may be used for multipass deformation in combination with Twist extrusion (TE). We investigate the plastic flow at the TE and SE. We show that a combination of TE and SE leads to mixing of the metal within the specimen.

Microstructural evolution of titanium under twist extrusion

We present some experimental results describing microstructural evolution in commercially pure titanium during severe plastic deformation by twist extrusion (TE). In particular, we show that increasing the number of TE passes leads to the decrease of the grain size d in both orthogonal and parallel cross-sections of the work piece. For example, if in its original state titanium has d ∼ 25 μm, then

Features of twist extrusion : Method, structures & material properties

During the last decade it has been shown that severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a very effective for obtaining ultra-fine grained (UFG) and nanostructured materials. The basic SPD methods are High Pressure Torsion (HPT) and Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). Recently several new methods have been developed: 3D deformation, Accumulative Roll Bonding, Constrained Groove Pressing, Repetitive C

Artificial Neural Networks to Solve Inverse Problems in Quantum Physics

Det skulle också kunna användaInverse problems are important in quantum physics as their solutions are essential in order to describe a number of systems using measurable information, e.g. excitation energies or material properties. The problem with inverse problems is that they are usually very hard to solve. One method that could be useful in solving these problems is artificial neural networks. Artificial neural networks ha

Allergy to an occupational allergen (Sapelli wood) in a child

The case is presented of a child who developed rhinoconjunctivitis, angioedema and asthma by sensitization to Sapelli wood, which was used in his father's carpentry. Positive skin-prick test, high levels of specific immunoglobulin E by ELISA and a positive conjunctival challenge test suggest a type I hypersensitivity mechanism to this wood. This is the first case report of sensitization to Sapelli

Description: CoGenT++ facilitates the re-distribution of all fully sequenced and published genomes, storing information about species, gene names and protein sequences. We describe our scalable imp

Application of geographic information technologies to historical landscape reconstruction and military terrain analysis of an American Revolution Battlefield: Preservation potential of historic lands in urbanized settings, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Through funding from the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program, geographic information technologies were employed to create a high resolution, spatially accurate representation of the 1775 landscape of Boston's Inner Harbor and to conduct a geospatial and temporal assessment of the location, extent, and preservation potential of an American Revolutionary War battlefield a

Joint disease, the hallmark of haemophilia: What issues and challenges remain despite the development of effective therapies?

Although effective therapies for haemophilia have been available for decades, the prevention and treatment of joint disease remain major clinical concerns for all haemophilia patients. Early identification of joint disease is vital to initiate or modify treatment, and prevent arthropathy. However, there remains a need for more sensitive and accurate methods, which may also detect improvement in pa

Unequal error protection for convolutional codes

In this correspondence, unequal error-correcting capabilities of convolutional codes are studied. For errors in the information symbols and code symbols, the free input- and output-distances, respectively, serve as '' unequal '' counterparts to the free distance. When communication takes place close to or above the channel capacity the error bursts tend to be long and the free distance is not any
