Drugs prescribed by general practitioners according to age, gender and socioeconomic status after adjustment for multimorbidity level
Background: Age, gender and socioeconomic status have been shown to be associated with the use of prescription drugs, even after adjustment for multimorbidity. General practitioners have a holistic and patient-centred perspective and our hypothesis is that this may reflect on the prescription of drugs. In Sweden the patient may seek secondary care without a letter of referral and the liability of

History Reborn inFree Competition: The Czech and Slovak Post-communist Transitions and Their Dominant Historical Narratives Two of the four historical narratives presented here, the Czech national-liberal narrative and the Slovak national-European narrative, imbue Czech and Slovak history with national and democratic meaning, by using history to legitimize future aims in these areas. The two rema
Streptococci and Platelets - A Study of Host-Pathogen Interaction Dynamics
Invasive infections remains one of the leading causes of death due to infections over the world, and efficient treatment remains elusive. One of the major causes of sepsis and other invasive infections is pathogenic streptococci that cause a wide range of clinical manifestations in humans. Group A and group G streptococci have both been shown to cause both infections of milder ranges as well as se
Fibrin binds to collagen and provides a bridge for alpha V beta 3 integrin-dependent contraction of collagen gels
The functional significance of fibrin deposits typically seen in inflammatory lesions, carcinomas and in healing wounds is not fully understood. In the present study, we demonstrate that fibrinogen/fibrin specifically bound to native Col I (collagen type I) and used the Col I fibre network as a base to provide a functional interface matrix that connects cells to the Col I fibres through alpha V be
Development of a novel macrostructured cathode for large-area neutron detectors based on the B-10-containing solid converter
We present a novel design for a macrostructured cathode that can be coated with a thin layer of the B-10 solid converter and mounted to replace the Boron-lined flat parallel plates of a proportional counter used for slow neutron detection. The proposed design consists of a 3D regular pattern exhibiting millimeter deep grooves with an opening angle of alpha = 45 degrees, which could be created in t
Stability of (B4C)-B-10 thin films under neutron radiation
Thin films of (B4C)-B-10 have shown to be very suitable as neutron-converting material in the next generation of neutron detectors, replacing the previous predominantly used He-3. In this contribution we show under realistic conditions that (B4C)-B-10 films are not damaged by the neutron irradiation and interactions, which they will be exposed to under many years in a neutron detector. 1 mu m thic

Texture Caches
This column examines the texture cache, an essential component of modern GPUs that plays an important role in achieving real-time performance when generating realistic images. GPUs have many components and the texture cache is only one of them. But it has a real impact on the performance of the GPU if rasterization and memory tiling are set up correctly.

Solvolysis of Substituted Benzoyl Chlorides in Nonionic and Mixed Micellar Solutions.
The solvolysis of substituted benzoyl chlorides is sensitive both to substituent electronic effects and to medium effects. The solvolysis reactions of substituted benzoyl chlorides have been analyzed in the presence of nonionic micelles. The reaction is inhibited or catalyzed depending on the reaction mechanism, dissociative or associative, respectively. The micellar effects observed can be relate
Genomic Profiling, Mutations and Deranged Signaling in Esophageal Cancer and Hereditary Colorectal Cancer
Cancer i mag-tarmkanalen ger ofta diffusa symtom, vilket i många fall leder till att tumörerna uppEsophageal cancer and colorectal cancer represents two major types of gastrointestinal tumors. Though refined surgery and introduction of novel chemotherapeutics have improved outcome, more than 2500 Swedes die from these diseases every year. Novel markers for early diagnosis, prognosis and treatment prediction are therefore needed. This thesis aimed to genetically profile esophageal cancer with c
Release of Ring Strain as Driving Force for Inversion of Stereochemistry - Application to the Synthesis of Ribopyranosides from Xylopyranosides
By using a Swern oxidation-epimerization-reduction sequence it is possible to selectively epimerize any position in isopropylidene-protected xylopyranosides, thus forming arabinosides, ribosides, and lyxosides. The driving force for epimerization of position 3 (xylo to ribo) is the release of ring strain by going from a 1,2-trans-acetal to a 1,2-cis-acetal.
Cancer risk in hospitalized sarcoidosis patients: a follow-up study in Sweden
Background: Sarcoidosis patients show dysregulated immune function, which may be related to subsequent cancer. We examined here the overall and specific cancer risks among Swedish subjects who had been hospitalized for sarcoidosis. Methods: A sarcoidosis research database was created by identifying hospitalized sarcoidosis patients from the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register and by linking them w

Multiple exciton generation in nano-crystals revisited: Consistent calculation of the yield based on pump-probe spectroscopy.
Multiple exciton generation (MEG) is a process in which more than one exciton is generated upon the absorption of a high energy photon, typically higher than two times the band gap, in semiconductor nanocrystals. It can be observed experimentally using time resolved spectroscopy such as the transient absorption measurements. Quantification of the MEG yield is usually done by assuming that the bi-e
Dppa5 improves hematopoietic stem cell activity by reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress.
Developmental pluripotency-associated 5 (Dppa5) is an RNA binding protein highly expressed in undifferentiated pluripotent stem cells. Here, we demonstrate that Dppa5 is a regulator of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that critically governs reconstitution capacity after bone marrow transplantation. Ectopic expression of Dppa5 followed by in vitro culture robustly increased HSC reconstitution level
Functional variants in the B-cell gene BANK1 are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototypical autoimmune disease characterized by production of autoantibodies and complex genetic inheritance(1-3). In a genome-wide scan using 85,042 SNPs, we identified an association between SLE and a nonsynonymous substitution (rs10516487, R61H) in the B-cell scaffold protein with ankyrin repeats gene, BANK1. We replicated the association in four indepen
A MATTER OF NUTRIENT EXCESS AND SHEAR STRESS
The metabolic syndrome is a clustering of several risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is a global problem with 90% of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is attributable to various factors including genetic predispositions and lifestyle. In T2D, there is a reduction in β cell mass and function, and impaired glucose homeostasis. It is often as
