Fuel cells, redox flow batteries and some water desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis and electrodialysis require efficient ion exchange membranes to perform in an optimum way. Thus, by enhancing the properties of these membranes there is a possibility to improve this type of applications and technologies. Depending on the specific application, anion or proton exchange membranes with g

Multiplexing efficiency is proposed as a simple and intuitive metric for characterizing multiple antenna systems in the spatial multiplexing mode of operation. Instead of comparing channel capacities of MIMO systems with different antennas, the metric offers valuable insights into the impact of antenna efficiency, efficiency imbalance and correlation on multiplexing performance. It is particularly

The gene for beta-microseminoprotein MSMB has been studied by DNA hybridization and molecular cloning techniques. Comparative analysis of restriction endonuclease digests of the cloned gene and of leukocyte DNA strongly suggested that the gene is present in a single copy in the haploid human genome. By Southern blot analysis of DNA from somatic cell hybrids, the gene was assigned to chromosome 10.

This paper presents the use of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor concept to probe the formation of macroscopic and laterally mobile supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) on SiOx-encapsulated nanohole-containing Au and Ag films. A comparison between Au- and Ag-based sensor templates demonstrates a higher sensitivity for Au-based templates with respect to both bulk and interfacial refr

The identification of carotid atheromatous plaques associated to a higher neurologic risk may be important in therapeutic decision making for asymptomatic patients and symptomatic patients with 50%-70% stenosis. The introduction of high-definition ultrasonography (HDU) and computer-assisted image analysis provides the possibility of a standard, objective and detailed characterization of the struct

Aeromonas species are known to be involved in human gastrointestinal diseases. These organisms colonize the gastrointestinal tract. Aeromonas hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. sobria have been demonstrated microscopically to adhere to animal cell lines that express mucous receptors, but quantitative studies of adherence to mucosal components such as mucin have not been published to date. Purified bovi

A nonlocal continuum plasticity theory is presented. The nonlocal field introduced here is defined as a certain weighted average of the corresponding local field, taken over all the material points in the body. Hereby, a quantity with the dimension of length occurs as a material parameter. When this so-called internal length is equal to zero, the local classical plasticity theory is regained. In t

This article investigates hydrological lexicon in Jahai, a Mon-Khmer language of the Malay Peninsula. Setting out from an analysis of the structural and semantic properties as well as the indigenous vs. borrowed origin of lexicon related to drainage, it teases out a set of distinct lexical systems for reference to and description of hydrological features. These include (1) indigenous nominal label
