Seventy standardized ringing sessions were carried out from April 1997 to August 2000 in a reedbed in Ria de Aveiro at Salreu, Portugal. The variation in the abundance of the common species is described as well as some aspects of their weight dynamics. Both, number of birds and species were higher during summer and autumn, when passage migrants occur and the number of juveniles is high. The pre-br

Three new species belonging to Hieracium sect. Hieracium, viz. H. argentarium, H. irmae and H. mucrodentatum, are described from the Swedish province of Värmland. In addition, H. acidolepis is described anew to accommodate the taxon hitherto known as H. acidotum (Dahlst.) Dahlst., because the type specimen (from Värmland) for that name has been shown to belong to a different species.

Isometric force, glycogen phosphorylase activity and lactate production were measured under conditions known to alter intracellular Ca2+ and cAMP to assess the role of these messengers in the coordination of metabolism with contractility in rat portal vein. Total phosphorylase (a + b) activity, was independent of treatment. The activity ratio phosphorylase activity ratio in the presence of isoprot

Views and proposals on housing improvement and social participation in Latin America have gone through changes in the last decades. These changes are noteworthy.

Leukotrienes (LTs) and prostaglandins (PGs) are metabolites of arachidonic acid that play major roles in various inflammatory conditions. The release of these mediators, by cells recruited to or present at the site of inflammation, modulate/influence the magnitude of the inflammatory response. A better understanding of eicosanoids and how their receptors trigger intracellular signaling during infl

We have investigated the hydrophobic properties of human skin fibroblast proteoglycans and related material by affinity chromatography on Octyl-Sepharose CL-4B in 4 M guanidinium hydrochloride (GdnHCl). Proteoglycans and related material could be separated into non-, medium and highly hydrophobic forms by elution with gradients of Triton X-100 in 4 M Gdn HCl. The non-hydrophobic material included

In response to the impact of the transformation on the historical and traditional space of the city, the region's unique cultural and hi

We present a generic scheme for approximating NP-hard problems on graphs of treewidth k = omega (log n). When a tree-decomposition of width l is given, the scheme typically yields an l / log n-approximation factor; otherwise, an extra log k factor is incurred. Our method applies to several basic subgraph and partitioning problems, including the maximum independent set problem.
