Hip disorders and osteoarthritis: focus on health-related quality of life, assesssment and intervention

The overall aims of this work were to investigate the consequences of hip disorders and hip osteoarthritis (OA) on health-related quality of life (HRQL) physical function and self-efficacy. The condition, hip OA, is often associated with significant pain and has a strong impact on physical function and quality of life. The prevalence of hip disorders were 32% and among the individuals reporting h

Gradient Methods for Large-Scale and Distributed Linear Quadratic Control

Popular Abstract in Undetermined I den här populärvetenskapliga sammanfattningen berörs avhandlingen Gradient Methods for Large-Scale and Distributed Linear Quadratic Control. Hur kan jetflygplan hålla sig i luften? Hur kan en Segway balansera en människa? Dessa frågor och många fler kan besvaras med hjälp av reglerteknik. Reglerteknik är ett område som behandlar hur man automatiskt styr system oThis thesis considers methods for synthesis of linear quadratic controllers for large-scale, interconnected systems. Conventional methods that solve the linear quadratic control problem are only applicable to systems with moderate size, due to the rapid increase in both computational time and memory requirements as the system size increases. The methods presented in this thesis show a much slower

Entrepreneurship research in China: internationalization or contextualization?

Entrepreneurship is an emerging research field that has received much scholarly attention in recent decades. Given the global scope of this attention, this article compares entrepreneurship research in China with that in the USA and Europe. Based on publications in Social Science Citation Index and Chinese Social Science Citation Index databases over the past 10 years, we use bibliometric method t

Skräddaren, sömmerskan och modet : arbetsmetoder och arbetsdelning i tillverkningen av kvinnlig dräkt 1770-1830

The aim of this study in textile studies and cultural history is to gain a greater understanding of what happened to the division of labour and manufacturing techniques when female fashions changed in the period 1770-1830. This was a time of upheaval as regards fashions, and a change in dress practice. The decades around 1800 were a period of major societal and cultural transformation. Female fash

Bacterial pollution induced community tolerance (PICT) to Cu and interactions with pH in long-term polluted vineyard soils

Pollution induced community tolerance (PICT) has been suggested as an end-point measurement less affected by confounding environmental factors compared to standard methods of microbial growth, activity and community composition. We evaluated the use of PICT to determine Cu toxicity in vineyard soils polluted with Cu based fungicides (25-1120 mg Cu kg(-1)). These soils also varied in pH (4.3-7.3),

Analysis of the Quadratic Term in the Backscattering Transformation

The quadratic term in the Taylor expansion at the origin of the backscattering transformation in odd dimensions n >= 3 gives rise to a symmetric bilinear operator B-2 on C-0(infinity)(R-n) x C-0(infinity)(R-n). In this paper we prove that B-2 extends to certain Sobolev spaces with weights and show that it improves both regularity and decay.

Decreased Neutrophil Apoptosis in Quiescent ANCA-Associated Systemic Vasculitis.

BACKGROUND: ANCA-Associated Systemic Vasculitis (AASV) is characterized by leukocytoclasis, accumulation of unscavenged apoptotic and necrotic neutrophils in perivascular tissues. Dysregulation of neutrophil cell death may contribute directly to the pathogenesis of AASV. METHODS: Neutrophils from Healthy Blood Donors (HBD), patients with AASV most in complete remission, Polycythemia Vera (PV), Sy

A haplotype in the inducible T-cell tyrosine kinase is a risk factor for seasonal allergic rhinitis

Background: Identification of disease-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) may be facilitated by focusing on genes in a disease-associated pathway. Objective: To search for SNPs in genes that belong to the T-cell receptor (TCR) pathway and that change in expression in allergen-challenged CD4+ cells from patients with SAR. Methods: CD4+ cells from pa

The Healthcare Voucher: Emergence, Formation and Dissemination

Market-inspired healthcare reforms have been introduced in Sweden: Freedom of Choice in Healthcare in 1989 and the National Healthcare Guarantee in 2005. After the general election 2006 the idea of the Healthcare Voucher has followed. Built on a theoretical framework composed of Foucault's concept of 'discursive formation' supported by Butler's concept of the ‘performativity of discourse’ the purp

A Short Period of Ventilation without Perfusion Seems to Reduce Atelectasis without Harming the Lungs during Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion.

To evaluate the lung function of donors after circulatory deaths (DCDs), ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has been shown to be a valuable method. We present modified EVLP where lung atelectasis is removed, while the lung perfusion is temporarily shut down. Twelve pigs were randomized into two groups: modified EVLP and conventional EVLP. When the lungs had reached 37°C in the EVLP circuit, lung perfus

Influence of bark on fuel ethanol production from steam-pretreated spruce.

Bark and bark-containing forest residues have the potential for utilization as raw material for lignocellulosic ethanol production due to their abundance and low cost. However, the different physical properties and chemical composition of bark compared to the conventionally used wood chips may influence the spruce-to-ethanol bioconversion process. This study assesses the impact of bark on the over

System analysis of a PV/T hybrid solar window

A building-integrated multifunctional PV/T solar window was suggested and developed by Andreas Fieber. The solar window is constructed of PV cells laminated on solar absorbers placed in a window behind the glazing. To reduce the costs of solar electricity, tiltable reflectors have been introduced in the construction to focus radiation onto the solar cells. The reflectors make it possible to contro
