Quinone reduction sites and the role of heme in succinate:quinone reductase. Studies in Bacillus subtilis and Paracoccus denitrificans

Succinate:quinone reductase (SQR) is an enzyme in the respiratory system of aerobic cells. SQR catalyzes two reactions, the oxidation of succinate to fumarate and the reduction of quinone to quinol. These reactions are coupled by electron transfer within the enzyme from the site of succinate oxidation to the site of quinone reduction. Some enzymes reduce ubiquinone (exergonic reaction) whereas oth

Inflammatory Response in Peripheral Arterial Disease

Atherosclerosis is now recognized as an inflammatory disease of the vessel wall and important features in the pathophysiology are activation of WBC, endothelial cells and increased levels of inflammatory mediators. The inflammatory response in PAD is further influenced in case

SWEDEN: Integrated strategies to overcome market barriers.

A national debate about how to transform and to ‘green’ the problematic housing stocks from the boom era has been going on since the late 1990s. Different kinds of policy instruments with energy efficiency objectives that address either energy systems, energy sources or construction and renovation of the building envelope have been in use. Some policy instruments have combined green objectives wit

Optimal sidelobes under linear and faster-than-Nyquist modulation

We minimize the frequency and time occupancy of multicarrier binary linear modulation based on two-dimensional faster than Nyquist (FTN) signaling. FTN analysis provides the asymptotic time–frequency consumption per bit and prolate spheroidal wave analysis minimizes the side lobe occupancy. For both problems, an excellent choice is a Gaussian pulse, with some adjustment of the side lobes.

HEp-2 Staining Pattern Classification

Classifying images of HEp-2 cells from indirect immunofluorescence has important clinical applications. We have developed an automatic method based on random forests that classifies an HEp-2 cell image into one of six classes. The method is applied to the data set of the ICPR 2012 contest. The previously obtained best accuracy is 79.3% for this data set, whereas we obtain an accuracy of 97.4%. The

Chemical analysis to promote the use of wild fruits from Mozambique

Popular Abstract in English Wild fruits trees species are widely distributed throughout the African countries. Many of these trees species produce fruits, which are used by the local communities to greater or less degrees. The importance of wild fruits in the diet depends to a large extent on the availability of the fruits, since cultivated fruit trees are not particularly common in the dry regionAbstract Wild fruit trees have significant cultural and socio-economic value in rural areas of Mozambique. Most of the wild fruits are seasonal and are available mainly in the wet season. Generally they have a short shelf-life and are eaten fresh or after minimal processing; the most common method of preservation is sun-drying. The fruits of Adansonia digitata, Landolphia kirkii, Salacia kraussii,

Lifetimes of high-spin states in 74Kr

High-spin states in Kr-74 were studied using the 40Ca(40Ca,alpha 2p)74Kr fusion evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV with Gammasphere and Microball and at a beam energy of 185 MeV with Euroball and Isis muli-detector arrays. Lifetimes of the high-spin states for the ground state band and the favoured negative parity band have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method.

A New Method of Determining Moisture Flow Coefficients for both Isothermal and Non-isothermal Conditions

The calculation of isothermal moisture transport requires a moisture flow coefficient, Dφ(φ,T), for isothermal flow with φ as the moisture state variable. In the non-isothermal case, a second flow coefficient, DTφ(φ,T), is required to account for the temperature gradient. This means that a number of isothermal measurements are required for a few different temperature levels. It also means that a c

Free Movement and Tax Treaties in the Internal Market

This book deals with the impact of the free movement rules in the EC Treaty on tax treaties in the internal market. This is a highly relevant issue since a provision in breach of teh free movement rules is inapplicable. The potential far-reaching consequences following the preclusion of tax treaty provisions makes it important for taxpayers and governments of teh Member States of teh EU to predict

Collaboratively Learning Marketing: How Organizations Jointly Develop and Appropriate Marketing Knowledge

DBusiness organizations increasingly face the problem of how to generate and share knowledge in collaboration with other, separate, business organizations. Researchers in the field of inter-organizational learning have started to study the partner-characteristic, partner-dynamic, and partner-situational factors that influence the process and outcome of such strategic learning collaboration. However
