Carbon starvation, senescence and specific mitochondrial stresses, but not nitrogen starvation and general stresses, are major triggers for mitophagy in Arabidopsis
Selective degradation of mitochondria by autophagy (mitophagy) is thought to play an important role in mitochondrial quality control, but our understanding of which conditions induce mitophagy in plants is limited. Here, we developed novel reporter lines to monitor mitophagy in plants and surveyed the rate of mitophagy under a wide range of stresses and developmental conditions. Especially carbon
Comparison of treatment retention of originator vs biosimilar products in clinical rheumatology practice in Sweden
OBJECTIVES: To compare treatment retention between biosimilars and their originator products among first starters (etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab and rituximab), as well as after non-medical switch. METHODS: Patients with rheumatic diseases starting, for the first time, an originator or biosimilar etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab or rituximab were identified in the national Swedish Rheumatol
Comparison of platelet immunity in patients with SLE and with ITP
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is characterized by the development of a specific anti-platelet autoantibody immune response mediating the development of thrombocytopenia. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the production of a wide variety of autoantibodies. In 15-20% of SLE cases, patients develop thrombocytopenia which appears to be autoimmune
Intravenous immunoglobulin and anti-D in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) : mechanisms of action
Infusion of large amounts of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or anti-D can reverse the low platelet count in patients with ITP within hours of the initiation of treatment. In some cases, the effects of IVIG appear to far outlast several half-lives of the product. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain these rapid and long term effects and these will be discussed in this review.
Immunobiology of T helper cells and antigen-presenting cells in autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
Autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP) is a bleeding disease in which autoantibodies are directed against the individual's own platelets, resulting in enhanced Fc-mediated platelet destruction by macrophages in the reticuloendothelial system. Most research in AITP has focused on characterization of the autoantibodies, while little has been devoted to the cellular immune mechanisms leading to a
Natural killer cell numbers and activity in patients with chronic autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura
Cellular immune mechanisms in chronic autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP)
Chronic autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP) is a common autoimmune-mediated bleeding disease in which autoantibodies are directed against platelets, resulting in their enhanced Fc-mediated destruction by macrophages in the spleen. While there has been extensive studies relating to the autoantibodies in this autoimmune disorder, relatively few have dealt with cell-mediated immunoregulation of

Defensive shimmering responses in Apis dorsata are triggered by dark stimuli moving against a bright background
Giant honeybees, including the open-nesting Asian giant honeybee Apis dorsata, display a spectacular collective defence behaviour - known as 'shimmering' - against predators, which is characterised by travelling waves generated by individual bees flipping their abdomens in a coordinated and sequential manner across the bee curtain. We examined whether shimmering is visually mediated by presenting

Voices of Sorrow and Joy : Cultivating Relations with the Unseen in Muslim Devotion
Abstract in TurkishHazreti Muhammed’in ailesi (Ehl-i Beyt), Şii mezhebi inancında merkezi bir konuma sahiptir. Bu makale, insan-ötesi varlıkları sadece The Family of the Prophet Muhammad holds a central position in Shiʿi Muslim religiosity. As immaterial beings able to intercede in this world, they are said to be witnessing and co-present in the lives of Muslims. Anthropology has neglected relations with immaterial more-than-human beings like these. Instead of regarding them merely as symbols or moral exemplars, this essay focuses on the cultivat
Early diagnosis, treatment, and Health-Related Quality of Life in women with mild Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.
How robust are wearable eye trackers to slow and fast head and body movements?
How well can modern wearable eye trackers cope with head and body movement? To investigate this question, we asked four participants to stand still, walk, skip, and jump while fixating a static physical target in space. We did this for six different eye trackers. All the eye trackers were capable of recording gaze during the most dynamic episodes (skipping and jumping). The accuracy became worse a
‘Pamoja Tunaweza’ : A Collaborative Program Model for Global Health Training & Education
The past two decades have seen unprecedented student demand for global health education through experiential and engaged learning within institutions of higher education in the United States. This demand created a need for innovative institutional partnerships. Since 2007, faculty from Cornell University’s Global Health Program and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUCo) have wor
Plasma Inflammatory Protein Biomarkers May Predict Cardiovascular Events in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis
Background/Purpose: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Systemic inflammation, driven by cytokines such as TNF, IL-6 and IL-17A, has been implicated as a contributing factor to CVD development in RA. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of 92 inflammatory proteins on the risk of CVD events in patients with early RA.Me
