Expression and regulation of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases in human and rat pancreatic islets.
As shown by transgenic mouse models and by using phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3) inhibitors, PDE3B has an important role in the regulation of insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells. However, very little is known about the regulation of the enzyme. Here, we show that PDE3B is activated in response to high glucose, insulin and cAMP elevation in rat pancreatic islets and INS-1 (832/13) cells. Activation
Early and Intermediate Outcome of Emergency Endovascular Aneurysm Repair of Ruptured Infrarenal Aortic Aneurysm: A Single-Centre Experience of 90 Consecutive Patients.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the early and intermediate outcome of a consecutive series of emergency endovascular aneurysm repairs (eEVAR) of computed tomography (CT)-verified infrarenal ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) at a single tertiary referral centre. METHODS: Prospectively collected data of patients operated between April 2000 and October 2007 were retrospectively reviewed and all their
A View from Language : Growth of language in individuals and populations
En konnektionistisk modell för individens inlärning undersöks på uppgiften att lära sig svenskans brutna verb paradigm (samexisterande svaga och starkaThe main question that this book tries to find answers to is what it is that makes language learnable. Language is one of the most complex human activities, but nearly 100% of humanity have learned a language in childhood. One answer could be that it is something in our brain that makes us learn language better than most other activities. Another answer could be that it is something in language as
The cost-effectiveness of treatment with erythropoietin compared to red blood cell transfusions for patients with chemotherapy induced anaemia: a Markov model.
BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a common complication of chemotherapy. As anaemia can lead to e.g. fatigue, depression, social isolation and chest pain it diminishes physical capacity and quality of life. It is generally accepted that symptomatic anaemia should be corrected. Treatment options include red blood cell transfusion (RBCT), erythropoietin (EPO) administration or a combination of both. OBJECTIVE:
Patients' perceptions of their participation in discharge planning after acute stroke.
Aims and objectives. To describe stroke patients' perceptions of their participation in the discharge planning process and identify correlates of perceived participation. Background. Patients have the right to participate in discharge planning, but earlier research has shown that they are often dissatisfied with the information they receive and their involvement in goal-setting during discharge pl
Properties of electron self-energies and their role in electron spectroscopies
The GW approximation for the self-energy connected with the one-electron Green's function has been very successful in predicting band structures for a large class of semiconductors and insulators. The physical basis for this approximation and general features of its nonlocality are discussed, as well as possible improvements. Besides quasiparticle energies the self-energy also gives the intrinsic

A comparison of serum and EDTA plasma in the measurement of glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibodies (GADA) and autoantibodies to islet antigen-2 (IA-2A) using the RSR radioimmunoassay (RIA) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits.
BACKGROUND: Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA) and tyrosine phosphatase antibodies (islet antigen-2 antibodies; IA-2A) are used in clinical practise to identify type 1 diabetes. METHODS: GADA and IA-2A were measured with RSR-ELISA kits in samples from 76 newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic children and 120 healthy controls. The aim was to evaluate performance of RSR-ELISA kits for GADA and

Distributive justice and the welfare state
Den första artikeln ställer frågan: Hög hög skatteomfördelning från arbetande till icke arbetande kan motiveras av grundantagandet att naturresurser är gemThis thesis is an attempt to generate knowledge about the justification, measurement and consequences of public redistribution. The first paper poses the following question: How much redistribution from working to non-working can be justified by arguing that external resources are owned jointly by all, or that ownership should ideally be divided equally? This question is analyzed using bargaining
High-resolution genomic profiling of an adult Wilms' tumor: evidence for a pathogenesis distinct from corresponding pediatric tumors.
Wilms' tumor (WT), the most common kidney tumor among children, is characterized by a triphasic morphology consisting of blastemal, epithelial, and stromal components. Adult WT is a rare malignancy displaying similar histological features. We here present the first published high-resolution genomic analysis of a mixed-type adult WT. This revealed a more pronounced genetic complexity than usually o
