Body composition, dietary protein and body weight regulation. Reconciling conflicting results from intervention and observational studies?

Physiological evidence indicates that high-protein diets reduce caloric intake and increase thermogenic response, which may prevent weight gain and regain after weight loss. Clinical trials have shown such effects, whereas observational cohort studies suggest an association between greater protein intake and weight gain. In both types of studies the results are based on average weight changes, and

Simple ultrasound-based rules for the diagnosis of ovarian cancer

Objective To derive simple and clinically useful ultrasound-based rules for discriminating between benign and malignant adnexal masses. Methods In a multicenter study involving nine centers consecutive patients with persistent adnexal tumors underwent transvaginal gray-scale and Doppler ultrasound examination using a standardized examination technique and standardized terms and definitions. Inform

Can individuals identify if needling was performed with an acupuncture needle or a non-penetrating sham needle?

A control treatment in acupuncture research must be credible, regardless if the needting is performed by one or by several therapists. Objective: To investigate if individuals could identify whether neediing had been given with an acupuncture needle or a sham needle and if the therapist influenced this ability. Design: Eighty individuals were randomized to one single needling given by one of four

IL28B Genetic Variation and Treatment Response in Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 3 Infection

Polymorphisms near the IL28B gene, which code for interferon (IFN)-lambda 3, predict response to pegylated interferon-alpha (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin treatment in hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infected patients. Follow-up studies of the effect of IL28B gene in HCV non-genotype 1 infected patients have almost always used predominantly HCV genotype 2-infected or mixed genotype 2/3-infected cohort

Origin of suppressed demixing in casein/xanthan mixtures

We explore the properties of casein/xanthan mixtures for xanthan concentrations beyond those inducing phase separation. Previous work has successfully described the onset of demixing by depletion theory in the protein limit, where the xanthan polysaccharides, the polymers, are larger than the caseins from skim milk powder, the colloids (S. Bhat et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter, 2006, L339). We no

A survey of biting midges of the genus Culicoides Latreille, 1809 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in NE Bulgaria, with respect to transmission of avian haemosporidians

This study presents data from a molecular survey of the species of the genus Culicoides from the region of Kalimok Field Station (NE Bulgaria) and haemosporidian parasites occurring in them in order to investigate the host-parasite specificity of haemosporidians to their dipteran vectors. The identification of Culicoides spp. was carried out by morphological and molecular-genetic methods. We colle

Comparison of two strategies to reduce ventricular pacing in pacemaker patients

Background: Managed Ventricular Pacing (MVP) and Search AV+ (SAV+) are two pacing algorithms designed to reduce ventricular pacing, MVP promotes conduction by operating in AAI/R mode with backup ventricular pacing during atrioventricular block (AVB). SAV+ operates in DDD/R mode with a nominal AV extension of 290 ms during atrial sensing and 320 ms during atrial pacing. The reduction in ventricular

System Identification in GSM/EDGE Receivers Using a Multi-Model Approach

Model order selection is an important element in system identification. It is well known that common model order selection methods such as Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian’s information criterion (BIC) neglect relevant information that is available in models of order different from the one chosen. In this paper the model order selection problem for receivers similar to those found

Lower Limb Amputation in Patients with Vascular Disease

Antalet årligen nytillkomna benamputerade i Sverige kan uppskattas till mellan 1000-1100 och mindre än 5 % av dessa fall är relaterade till andra orsaker, t.ex. trauma elThe current prevalence of persons amputated at transmetatarsal level or higher in Sweden can be estimated to be between 5000 and 5500 persons (approx. 0.06 % of the population). The majority of these are patients with vascular disease (≈ 80%). In Sweden between 1000 and1100 new amputees can be expect every year. Less than 5% of all amputations will be related to causes other than vascular disease.

Effects of the DPP-4 Inhibitor Vildagliptin on Incretin Hormones, Islet Function, and Postprandial Glycemia in Subjects with Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of vildagliptin on incretin hormone levels, islet function, and postprandial glucose control in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Research Design and Methods: A 12-week double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study comparing vildagliptin (50 mg qd) and placebo was conducted in 179 subjects with IGT (2-h glucose= 9.1 mmol/l

Fast and Reliable Two-View Translation Estimation

It has long been recognized that one of the fundamental difficulties in the estimation of two-view epipolar geometry is the capability of handling outliers. In this paper, we develop a fast and tractable algorithm that maximizes the number of inliers under the assumption of a purely translating camera. Compared to classical random sampling methods, our approach is guaranteed to compute the optimal

Radioactivity Exploration from the Arctic to Antarctica. Part 5: The Tundra-94 expedition

The joint Swedish-Russian “Tundra Ecology-94” expedition during 1994 used the large Russian ice-breaking research vessel R/V Akademik Fedorov a platform and went along a coastline of 3500 km-from the Kola Peninsula 10°E to Kolyuchinskaya Bay 173°E. Radioactivity in air, seawater and sediment was explored at various locations along the route. The average of 7Be activity concentration in air over th

Characterization of human dopaminergic neurons in the developing mesencephalon and upon differentiation of stem cells- for replacement therapy in Parkinson´s disease

Sjukdomen beror Cell-replacement therapy is a promising approach for treating patients with Parkinson ́s disease (PD). For this purpose, there is a need for developing a protocol that can generate high numbers of human transplantable mesencephalic dopaminer- gic (mesDA) neurons. For decades, studies have therefore been made in mouse and other model organisms in order to elucidate key-factors that can be used for

What successful branding looks like: a managerial perspective

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the ways in which food companies can work with branding to perform better in the market. The authors achieve this purpose by comparing how different managers of food brands prioritise and evaluate their brands, in relation to a theoretical ideal framework. Design/methodology/approach - A survey of 77 managers of domestic and int

Tracking the shape-dependent sintering of platinum-rhodium model catalysts under operando conditions.

Nanoparticle sintering during catalytic reactions is a major cause for catalyst deactivation. Understanding its atomic-scale processes and finding strategies to reduce it is of paramount scientific and economic interest. Here, we report on the composition-dependent three-dimensional restructuring of epitaxial platinum-rhodium alloy nanoparticles on alumina during carbon monoxide oxidation at 550 K
