Two schematic modes of political mobilization of the electorate, and patterns of patronage, have been historically common in Indian politics; indirect vertical mobilization and broad horizontal mobilization. This thesis examines the impact of these modes of mobilization on socioeconomic development among the larger states of India. It also attempts to put this impact in relation to other factors.
