Conserving approximations in time-dependent density functional theory

In the present work, we propose a theory for obtaining successively better approximations to the linear response functions of time-dependent density or current-density functional theory. The new technique is based on the variational approach to many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) as developed during the sixties and later expanded by us in the mid-nineties. Due to this feature, the resulting respo

Direct electron transfer between graphite electrodes and ligninolytic peroxidases from Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Electron transfer (ET) of ligninolytic peroxidases was studied in the bioelectrocatalytic reduction reaction of H2O2 at peroxidase-modified graphite electrodes. Specifically, native lignin (LiP) and manganese (MnP) peroxidases secreted by Phanerochaete chrysosporium, as well as a few different recombinant MnP forms were used in the electrochemical studies. The recombinant enzymes included wild-typ

Rotational capacity of reinforced concrete beams

The rotational capacity of a plastic hinge is analysed by means of a new approach, where the strain localization in the compression zone is taken into account. This leads to a strong size dependency of the rotational capacity. Comparisons with test results confirm this conclusion.

Numerical simulation of two-phase flow and heat transfer in a composite duct

In this work, a three-dimensional computational method has been further developed for a composite duct, to analyze water phase change and liquid water saturation level, two-phase flow and heat transfer in a multi-component mixture. The duct under consideration consists of a flow duct, porous layer and solid structure. Advanced boundary conditions are applied in the analysis, concerning the thermal

Quality of life and ethics-patients with ischemic heart disease

Män och kvinnor som vårdats för hjärtinfarkt vid UniversiteOne month and one year after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (n=296), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (n=99) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (n=18) patients completed a questionnaire for self-assessment of quality of life (QoL) during the period 1989?1991. Patients differed from age- and sex-matched controls (n=88) in both somatic and emotional dimensions, but less after one

A Predictive PI Controller for Processes with Long Dead Time

This paper describes a predictive PI controller with dead-time compensation. The advantage of the new controller compared with other dead time compensating controllers is that it contains only three adjustable parameters; the gain, the integral time and the dead time. The controller is also suited for processes with varying dead times.

Changes in the atmospheric deposition of minor and rare elements between 1975 and 2000 in south Sweden, as measured by moss analysis

Elements emitted to the atmosphere are partly exported to more remote areas and contribute to the regional and territorial deposition rates. This study is based on the principle that carpet-forming bryophytes (pleurocarpic mosses) absorb elements and particles from rain, melting snow and dry deposition. We compare the concentrations of 60 elements in carpets of the forest moss Pleurozium schreberi

Phase diagram and physicochemical properties of the n-octyl alpha-D-glucoside/water system

Four experimental methods were used to study the phase diagram, as well as the thermodynamic and structural properties of the binary system n-octyl alpha-D-glucoside water in the temperature range 25-130degreesC. Sorption calorimetry allows one to determine the activity of water and enthalpy of mixing as functions of water content at constant temperature, while DSC scans temperature at constant co

Properties and Applications of Temperature Sensitive Gels

The work presented deals with the characterisation and application of critical gels. In order to provide a theoretical foundation, the thermodynamics of the reversible swelling and shrinking behaviour of such gels is outlined. The temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel (NiPAAm) was chosen for experimental investigation. Dif ferent methods of producing the gel are described, and the

Contrast - from a contrastive perspective

The main concern of the paper is to address some problems that arise when defining the concept of contrast and to clarify the relation between contrast and other concepts of information structure. As to the definition of the notion of contrast, we need to separate the semantic and pragmatic aspects of contrastiveness as well as identify different types within these two main categories. There is ab

Progenitor cells in the postnatal central nervous system, characterization and genetic manipulation

New neurons are only generated in two places of the postnatal brain; the subventricular zone (SVZ) and hippocampus. The SVZ-derived cells specifically migrate to the olfactory bulb where they give rise to new interneurons. We have genetically manipulated the postnatal SVZ progenitor cells with the aim to direct them to a neuronal fate in the striatum. Our result showed that ectopic expression of t

Pain in older adults living in sheltered accommodation--agreement between assessments by older adults and staff

This study aimed to investigate the presence of pain, pain duration, localization(s), intensity, type and pharmacological treatment among older adults living in sheltered accommodation or receiving rehabilitation, as well as the agreement between pain assessments performed by staff and the older adults. Twenty-nine randomly selected older adults (65+ years) and the staff who looked after them part

Beneficial effects of ACTH on the serum lipoprotein profile and glomerular function in patients with membranous nephropathy

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that short-term treatment with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has a strong and rapid lipid-lowering effect. In this long-term study of nephrotic patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy, the influence of ACTH on the serum lipoprotein profile and glomerular function as well as the dose-effect relationship was investigated. METHODS: Fourteen patien

Graalsagans värden analyseras ur ett dubbelt perspThis dissertation aims at showing that Chrétien de Troyes' Conte du Graal does not, as often affirmed, uphold traditional chivalrous values, but discloses a problematic ideology, mostly as a result of multiple interactions at the textual level. In order to examine ideology, Le Conte du Graal is analysed in the light of the poetics elaborated by Vincent Jouve in his Poétique des valeurs (2001). Fol

Determination of the pore-size distribution in gels

A method for determination of the accessible volume fraction in gels as function of the molecular weight of the solutes is presented. The pore-size distribution is determined by measuring the rate of diffusion of a mixture of solutes into a gel using gel filtration for separation. The solutes, of various sizes, are detected by refractive index measurements. Two marker molecules (blue dextran and g
