JAG2 induction in hypoxic tumor cells alters Notch signaling and enhances endothelial cell tube formation.

Several studies have revealed links between hypoxia and activation of Notch in solid tumors. While most reports have focused on icN1 stabilization by direct interaction with HIF proteins, little attention has been given to Notch ligand regulation during hypoxia. Here we show that the Notch ligand JAG2 is transcriptionally activated by hypoxia in a HIF-1α dependent manner. Hypoxic JAG2 induction re

Involvement of non-dopaminergic systems in L-DOPA-induced dyskinsia

Parkinson's disease and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) does not merely involve the dopamine (DA) system but also include non-dopaminergic systems such as glutamate and serotonin (5-HT). An aberrant glutamate transmission at the corticostriatal synapse, has been linked to LID. Pharmacological agents to glutamate receptors at this synapse, (of which some are already clinically tested), could preve

Probing the influence from residual Ti interstitials on water adsorption on TiO2(110)

Reduced, stoichiometric and oxidized TiO2(110) surfaces have been compared using valence photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that the intensity from the band-gap state carries contributions from both oxygen surface vacancies and residual Ti interstitials, present after the sample cleaning procedure. The density of Ti interstitials was found to be 0.05 +/- 0.02 monlayers (ML), while the de

Inferring the migratory status of woodland birds usisng ringing data: the case of a constant-effort site located in the Iberian highlands.

Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of birds is crucial for effective management and conservation of their populations. However, we still have only limited knowledge not only of the wintering destinations of many Iberian breeding migrants but also of aspects as general as the migratory behaviour of the populations of many common avian species that breed in the Iberian highlands. We used

The Reluctant Change Agent : Change, Chance and Choice among Teachers, Educational Change in the City

Forfatteren argumentThis dissertation critically analyses the discourse on educational change. By placing educational change in the context of globalisation and innovation the author argues that the current discourse on educational change is un-nuanced and omits the important perspectives on change. The author has analysed an educational district in Sweden and one of its projects on competence development, named 'Str

Patient knowledge, perceptions, expectations and satisfaction on allergen-specific immunotherapy: A survey

Background: Assessing patient's perspective provides useful information enabling a customized approach which has been advocated by current guidelines. In this multicentre cross-sectional study we evaluated personal viewpoints on allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) in patients treated with subcutaneous (SCIT) or sublingual (SLIT) immunotherapy. Methods: A survey of 28 questions assessing patient'

Correction of hypothermic and dilutional coagulopathy with concentrates of fibrinogen and factor XIII: an in vitro study with ROTEM

Background: Fibrinogen concentrate treatment can improve coagulation during massive traumatic bleeding. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine whether fibrinogen concentrate, or a combination of factor XIII and fibrinogen concentrates, could reverse a haemodilution-induced coagulopathy during hypothermia. Methods: Citrated venous blood from 10 healthy volunteers was diluted in vitro by 33

Revisiting Corporate Sustainability: Towards a Critically-Performative Research Agenda

The article discusses research which focused on the influence of Critical Management Studies (CMS) on the goals of firms to attain corporate sustainability (CS). The researchers argued that both CMS and CS share objectives that are overlapping in various ways and aim to contribute to the issue concerning how CS can be studied critically and address the problem related to the relevance of CMS-inspi

One-particle properties of deformed N approximate to 28 odd-N nuclei with weakly bound or resonant neutrons

Possible deformation of odd-N nuclei with N approximate to 28 toward the neutron drip line is investigated using the Nilsson diagram based on deformed Woods-Saxon potentials. Both weakly-bound and resonant one-particle levels are properly obtained by directly solving the Schrodinger equation in mesh of space coordinate with the correct boundary condition. If we use the same diffuseness of the pote

Swedes in Barbary Captivity. The Political Culture of Human Security, Circa 1660-1760

»Schweden in Gefangenschaft der Barbaresken: Die politische Kultur humaner Sicherheit, circa 1660-1760«. This article aims to present a specificform of “Human Security” during the Early Modern era. As a case study, the relationship between Sweden and the North African states will be put forward. The Swedish maritime expansion in the Mediterranean during the 17th century resulted in insecurity for

Fly-and-forage strategy in the bat Pipistrellus nathusii during autumn migration

Populations of Pipistrellus nathusii (Nathusius's bat), an insectivorous aerial-hawking species that breeds in north-eastern Europe, perform long-distance migrations between breeding sites and hibernation areas in central and southern Europe. The feeding strategy of migrating P nathusii was investigated in Latvia on the east coast of the Baltic Sea, exploring evidence for and against two non-mutua

Diatoms: Their strange evolution and remarkable properties

We review some new literature on diatoms, with emphasis on genomics, evolution, ecology and biomimetic nanotechnical applications. Diatoms account for a substantial part of the photosynthetic production on this planet, and their genome is a mosaic of contributions from different sources. They occupy very diverse ecological niches, and may have been the first organisms to carry out C4 photosynthesi

The Swedish national cancer strategy programme published in 2009 emphasises the patient perspective and focuses on the patient process. Over the years the different modalities in breast cancer treatment are changing position, making accurate diagnosis and quality assurance in breast pathology even more important than before. Aims. The aim of paper I was to examine overall su

Thermal breakdown of extinguishing agents

Four fire extinguishing agents has been investigated, bromotrifluoromethane, Halon 1301, pentafluoroethane, HFC 125, heptafluoropropane, HFC 227ea and dodecafluoro-2- methylpentane-3-one, C6F-ketone. The inerting concentrations were determined in a cubic pressure vessel with a volume of 8 litres. A cup burner was used to find the flameextinguishing concentrations for the agents. Thermal breakdown

WUSCHEL protein movement mediates stem cell homeostasis in the Arabidopsis shoot apex

WUSCHEL (WUS) is a homeodomain transcription factor produced in cells of the niche/organizing center (OC) of shoot apical meristems. WUS specifies stem cell fate and also restricts its own levels by activating a negative regulator, CLAVATA3 (CLV3), in adjacent cells of the central zone (CZ). Here we show that the WUS protein, after being synthesized in cells of the OC, migrates into the CZ, where
