Bramble patch

Blackberries are diverse and have an interesting distribution and biology. They belong to the genus Rubus, which also includes raspberries and cloudberries. Blackberries consist of hundreds of so called microspecies that can be difficult to distinguish. These microspecies form seeds without prior fertilization, which means that all individual plants within the microspecies have an identical gene s

Among other things, you can admire a collection of hellebores (Helleborus) blooming from winter to spring. At the beginning of May, the first peonies (Paeonia) emerge. In this part of the Botanical Garden the plants

The Greenhouse

The greenhouse consists of nine departments with different climates and plants from all over the world. Adjacent to desert succulents are a couple of 100-year-old cycads, native to tropical forests, and now threatened by extinction. The greenhouse was ready in 1865 and plants from the old greenhouse, then situated in Lundagård in front of the current university building, were moved here. Several o

Winterbreak 2024

Is it possible to start our spring and summer seedlings already or are we getting ahead of ourselves? Even now it is possible to start some seedlings first indoors, to then put them outside when it gets warm and bright. In this hands-on activity, you will get both wild and “tame” seeds to test at home. Large groups may need to split up and take turns, so that everyone can join. You find us here! D

Art and history

History of the Botanical GardenThe old botanical garden was founded 1690 and was situated at the current University square in Lundagård. At that time, the garden sorted under the Faculty of Medicine. Lack of committed leadership and poor economy meant that the garden was soon left to its fate. It was never used for research and education purposes. In 1740, initiatives were taken to establish a new

Alternatives to peat-based compost

Peat has many good properties as a growing substrate. But the use of peat leads to large emissions of greenhouse gases. Therefore, the Botanical Garden has started a project to test different alternatives to peat. What is peat?Peat consists of incompletely decomposed plant remains that have formed over thousands of years in wetlands. What is peat used for?Peat is a good growing substrate for severa

Agathis house

The house was built as an orangerie for overwintering cold-sensitive plants. Today, plants that tolerate cool winter temperatures are kept here permanently. The temperature lies between 12°C and 25°C with large daily and yearly fluctuations. The Agathis house comprises mainly species from the subtropical region across Oceania. Fernery

In the fernery we take a leap back in time, to a period in which ferns and lycopods covered the face of the Earth. The climate was warm and humid and no flowering plants had evolved yet. Fossils of lycopods show that this group has existed for 500 million years, whereas the first ferns appeared later, approximately 360 million years ago. In the fernery, there are representatives of all the major
