Catalytic properties of α-chymotrypsin in organic media

α-Chymotrypsin was deposited on Celite and the resulting immobilized preparations were used to carry out peptide synthesis reactions in organic media with only small amounts of water present. The influence of different parts of the donor ester and acceptor nucleophile substrate molecules on the kinetics of the enzymatic reactions was studied. The specificity of α-chymotrypsin in organic media was

Identification of Sarcopenia Components That Discriminate Slow Walking Speed : A Pooled Data Analysis

BACKGROUND: The Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) sought to identify cut points for muscle strength and body composition measures derived from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) that discriminate older adults with slow walking speed. This article presents the core analyses used to guide the SDOC position statements. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data analyses of pooled data. SETT

Olfaction in raptors

Raptors from the orders Accipitriformes and Falconiformes have been considered to rely principally on vision. Historically, this assumption has led scientists to discount any possible sense of smell in these birds, until work on cathartid vultures indicated that these species at least rely on olfaction to find carrion. In this review I provide evidence that raptors in general have functional olfac

Continuous mitotic activity of primitive hematopoietic stem cells in adult mice

The proliferative activity of aging hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is controversially discussed. Inducible fluorescent histone 2B fusion protein (H2B-FP) transgenic mice are important tools for tracking the mitotic history of murine HSCs in label dilution experiments. A recent study proposed that primitive HSCs symmetrically divide only four times to then enter permanent quiescence. We observed t

Hadroproduction of scalar P -wave quarkonia in the light-front kT -factorization approach

In this work, we present a thorough analysis of scalar P -wave χQ0, Q = c, b quarkonia electromagnetic form factors for the γ∗γ∗→ χQ0 couplings, as well as their hadroproduction observables in k⊥-factorisation using the light-front (LF) potential approach for the quarkonium wave function. The electromagnetic form factors are presented as functions of photon virtualities. We discuss the role of the

Estrogen receptor content in adenovirus type 9-induced rat mammary tumors

Hormonal factors play an important role in the induction of mammary tumors and tumor-like lesions in adenovirus type 9-inoculated W/Fu rats. Primary Ad 9-induced fibroadenomas contained significantly higher amounts of estrogen receptor (determined by means of enzyme immunoassay) in comparison to normal breast tissue (p = 0.01**) and 'spontaneous' fibroadenomas (p = 0.03*), used as control tissues.

Inhibition of platelet aggregation by granulocytes stimulated during experimental trauma

The effect of granulocytes, stimulated in vivo by standardized soft tissue trauma, on the aggregation of autologous platelets in vitro, was studied in the pig. Platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid was inhibited when platelets harvested before trauma were incubated with granulocytes obtained 5 min after trauma. The granulocytes were separated from the platelets during the incuba

Adenovirous type 9-induced tumorigenesis in the rat mammary gland related to sex hormonal state

Adenovirus type 9 was inoculated sc into newborn Wistar/Furth rats, divided into four groups: (1) six male rats, not treated further; (2) 11 male rats, castrated at 4 weeks of age; (3) 12 male rats, castrated at 4 weeks of age and subsequently treated repeatedly with estrogen; and (4) 12 female rats, not treated further. All of the rats in group 3 developed mammary hyperplasia and tumors (fibroade

Serum perfluoroalkyl substances in residents following long-term drinking water contamination from firefighting foam in Ronneby, Sweden

BACKGROUND: In December 2013, it was discovered that drinking water supplied to one third of the households in Ronneby, southern Sweden, was highly contaminated by PFAS (sum level >10,000 ng/L) originated from firefighting foams used at a nearby military airport.OBJECTIVES: To report serum PFAS levels of Ronneby residents participating in a biomonitoring program, and to describe the variation by a

The state’s guardian angel? : The Georgian Orthodox Church and human security

The Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) organisation has 15 departments, which focus on a wide range of areas from missionary work to finance, economy, real estate, ecology and military. This chapter focuses on historical and political contexts that shaped the GOC as an organisation over time. The GOC’s organisation is headed by Patriarch Ilia, while the administrative–operational part is conducted by

Nationalism

What is nationalism? When did it originate and how did it develop throughout the centuries? What types of nationalism have evolved in different sociopolitical settings and why? By addressing these questions, this entry seeks to address the key issues of the conceptualization of nationalism, followed by an analysis of its development in different structural, cultural, and political contexts. The en

What is the substitution effect of e-bikes? A randomised controlled trial

As sales of e-bikes increase, so does the need for reliable evaluations of which means of transport the e-bike replaces, what we call the substitution effect. A randomised controlled trial with GPS data from 98 frequent drivers in Sweden was conducted to investigate the effect of the e-bike on modal choice, the number of trips, distance, as well as perceptions of the e-bike as a substitute for theAs sales of e-bikes increase, so does the need for reliable evaluations of which means of transport the e-bike replaces, what we call the substitution effect. Reperfusion of Free Full-Thickness Skin Grafts in Periocular Reconstructive Surgery Monitored Using Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging

PURPOSE: Free skin grafts are frequently used in reconstructive surgery. However, little is known about the course of reperfusion due to the previous lack of reliable perfusion monitoring techniques. The aim of this study was to use state-of-the-art laser speckle contrast imaging to monitor free skin grafts in the periocular area.METHODS: Seven patients needing surgery due to tumor removal or cica

Property, Citizenship, and Invisible Dispossession in Myanmar's Urban Frontier

Myanmar’s systematic dispossession of religious and ethnic minorities is well-documented as a tool for counterinsurgency through territorialisation. However, the specifific contours of the relationship between minorities, territorialisation, and urban dispossession remain underexplored. The article argues that legislative changes linking identity, property, and belonging led to widescale invisible

Imaging the Thermalization of Hot Carriers after Thermionic Emission over a Polytype Barrier

The thermalization of nonequilibrium charge carriers is at the heart of thermoelectric energy conversion. In nanoscale systems, the equilibration length can be on the order of the system size, leading to a situation where thermoelectric effects need to be considered as spatially distributed, rather than localized at junctions. The energy exchange between charge carriers and phonons is of fundament

Distributed and adaptive triggering control for networked agents with linear dynamics

This paper proposes distributed event-triggered schemes for achieving state consensus for multi-agent linear systems. For each agent modeled by a linear control system in Rn, a positive signal is embedded in its event function, with the aim of guaranteeing an asymptotic convergence to state consensus for networked linear systems interacted in an undirected and connected graph, and with Zeno trigge

Associations of perinatal characteristics with endometriosis : a nationwide birth cohort study

BACKGROUND: Perinatal characteristics are associated with subsequent risk of several chronic diseases. Previous studies regarding endometriosis were based on small samples and retrospective data and were limited by unmeasured confounding bias, leading to conflicting and inconclusive findings. We investigated the associations of maternal and birth characteristics with risk of endometriosis among Sw

Short and close in time : overlapped occupation from the layer 56 of the Molare Rock shelter (Southern Italy)

The Molare Rock shelter (S. Giovanni a Piro, Salerno, Italy) is a key site to carry out high-resolution chronological studies in the broader context of Italian Mousterian peopling dynamics. The stratigraphic sequence is to be referred to MIS 5 and is characterized by the presence of a number of thin anthropic levels (often consisting of largely undisturbed living floors) alternated with sterile la
