Morphological variations of calcite microfossils synchrotron-based μCT reveal the last 200 years of environmental changes at the Baltic Sea entrance

Human activities in coastal areas have accelerated during the last 200 years. Environmental changes resulting in a combination of three threats, i.e., deoxygenation, warming, and ocean acidification, impact particularly sub-polar regions. To better understand these environmental challenges, we need to develop tools to compare our present situation with previous periods less impacted by anthropogen

Climate variability and anthropogenic impacts through a palaeo-morphological lens: an innovative microCT approach using Baltic Sea benthic foraminifera

Human-induced impacts are increasing pressure on coastal ecosystems, particularly on benthic ecosystems in high-latitude regions. It has become evident that three of the greatest marine environmental challenges related to anthropogenic activity are warming, ocean acidification, and deoxygenation. The effect of these environmental changes on our uncertain future has created a need to understand the

Time-series anonymization of tabular health data using generative adversarial network

Data anonymization has been used as a fundamental tool in various domains, e.g. healthcare, to alter personal data such that individuals can no longer be identified directly or indirectly in a way to enable broader sharing of data. For example, data perturbation techniques add noise to original data allowing individual record confidentiality while maintaining high-quality data for analytical purpo

Domain Knowledge-Driven Generation of Synthetic Healthcare Data

Healthcare longitudinal data collected around patients' life cycles, today offer a multitude of opportunities for healthcare transformation utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms. However, access to "real" healthcare data is a big challenge due to ethical and legal reasons. There is also a need to deal with challenges around electronic health records (EHRs) including biased, heterogeneity, i

Hardenberger : with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

Phenomenal virtuoso trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger is ready to dazzle Turku for the third time! Jolas' "Eleven Songs" is a jazz tickler, a sparkly biting, at times dreamy and above all playful composition. Haydn's Concerto, one of his most popular works, will be freshly interpreted by the evening's artists. Conductor John Storgårds and TPO:s Dvořák cycle begins with the composer's breakthrough symph

Mischief and Magic

Burlesque comes to The Bridgewater Hall in Stravinsky’s electrifying ballet, Petrushka, meanwhile the spotlight shines on one of the world’s most distinguished trumpet players, Håkan Hardenberger, all with Chief Conductor John Storgårds at the reins. Pieces performed by Håkan Hardenberger:Joseph Haydn: Konzert für Trompete und Orchester Es-Dur Hob. VIIe:1 Betsy Jolas: Onze Lieder (1977) für Trompe

Opinion on solar radiation modification – Ethical perspectives

In the context of the European Commission’s work to further the EuropeanGreen Deal, Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič requested theEuropean Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) to issuea series of three Opinions providing ethical perspectives on different aspectsof the green transition. The Scoping Considerations provided by the Vice-President note that thequestions raised by

Freshwater ecosystems under natural and anthropogenic stressors : The impact of ultraviolet radiation and nanoplastics on plankton and the ecosystem

Since life emerged on Earth, organisms have had to handle threats and stressors of different kinds. In freshwater ecosystems, one of these ancient stressors is the solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Life has been continuously exposed to it, and various behavioural and morphological adaptations have evolved to cope with the stressor. On the other hand, human activities have introduced novel stressor

A genome-scale metabolic reconstruction provides insight into the metabolism of the thermophilic bacterium Rhodothermus marinus

The thermophilic bacterium Rhodothermus marinus has mainly been studied for its thermostable enzymes. More recently, the potential of using the species as a cell factory and in biorefinery platforms has been explored, due to the elevated growth temperature, native production of compounds such as carotenoids and exopolysaccharides, the ability to grow on a wide range of carbon sources including pol

The role of migrant networks on economic outcomes during the age of mass migration: Swedish immigrants in the U.S. 1900–1920

This paper explores the role of migrant networks on the occupa-tional earnings of Swedish male immigrants in the United Statesfrom 1900 to 1920. Using data from full-count U.S. censuses, weconstruct various measurements of migrant networks based on theshare of Swedish, other Scandinavian, and other foreign-born indi-viduals at both the county and neighborhood levels. To define theneighborhood leve

Maternal weight during pregnancy and risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in offspring

In addition to biological factors, maternal exposures during pregnancy can contribute to leukemogenesis in offspring. We conducted a population-based cohort study in Sweden to investigate the association between risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in offspring and maternal anthropometrics during pregnancy. A total of 2,961,435 live-born singletons during 1983-2018 were followed from birth t

Memory State Dynamics in BEOL FeFETs : Impact of Area Ratio on Analog Write Mechanisms and Charging

This work presents dynamic state writing by combining ferroelectric (FE) polarization together with charge injection (CI) on Si-based ferroelectric MOSFETs as a novel approach for non-volatile memory design. FE capacitors are non-destructively integrated in the Back-End-of-Line (BEOL) with Si MOSFETs to create FE-Metal-FETs (FeMFETs). We explore the FE/MOS area ratio (AR) as a critical design para

Program 3, Season 24-25, OSCyL, Turno 1 : with Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León

At the start of this commemorative season, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León will pay tribute to Gabriel Fauré on the 100th anniversary of his death by performing his evocative Pelléas et Mélisande. They introduce two new names to our audience: the French conductor Fabien Gabel and the Swedish trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, an international reference in trumpet performance. Hardenberger

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra performs Brahms and Widmann

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra, Ingo Metzmacher and Håkan Hardenberger performed "Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet and Orchestra" by Jörg Widmann and "Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68" by the German composer Johannes Brahms.

Teaching the Russian War against Ukraine : Ukraine as a Microcosm of the Paradigm Shift from International Relations to Planetary Politics

The impact of the Russian war against Ukraine should have far-reaching repercussions on the teaching of International Relations (IR) and European Union (EU) studies. In this article, it is argued that Ukrainian resistance to the invasion must be part of an important shift in thinking about IR and the EU within holistic planetary politics. First, the terminologies and technologies of teaching IR an
