Preventing fractures in elderly people
Preventing fractures in elderly people is a priority, especially as it has been predicted that in 20 years almost a quarter of people in Europe will be aged over 65. This article describes the factors contributing to fracture, interventions to prevent fracture, and the various treatments
Ximelagatran Compared with Warfarain for prevention of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atiral fibrillaton: Rationale. Objectives and design of a pair of clinical trials and baseline patient characteristics (SPORTIF III and V).
Background Ximelagatran is a novel, oral direct thrombin inhibitor under investigation as an alternative to warfarin for prevention of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Two long-term studies in patients with AF and at least one additional risk factor for stroke are underway to compare the safety and efficacy of fixed-dose ximelagatran (36 mg bid) without coagu
The EPAGE internet guideline as a decision support tool for determining the appropriateness of colonoscopy
Background: Few studies have examined how physicians perceive guidelines, much less their perceptions of an Internet presentation of such guidelines. This study assessed physicians' acceptance ofan Internet-based guideline on the appropriateness of colonoscopy. Methods: Gastroenterologists participating in an international observational study consulted an Internet-based guideline for consecutive p
Inflammatory response in white adipose tissue in the non-obese hormone-sensitive lipase null mouse model.
Protein D, the immunoglobulin D-binding protein of Haemophilus influenzae, is a lipoprotein
Protein D is an immunoglobulin D-binding membrane protein exposed on the surface of the gram-negative bacterium Haemophilus influenzae. Results reported here indicate that protein D is a lipoprotein. The protein is apparently synthesized as a precursor with an 18-residue-long signal sequence modified by the covalent attachment of both ester-linked and amide-linked palmitate to the cysteine residue
Characterizing bird migration phenology using data from standardized monitoring at bird observatories
Long-term data from standardized monitoring programmes at bird observatories are becoming increasingly available. These data are frequently used for detecting changes in the timing of bird migration that may relate to recent climate change. We present an overview of problematic issues in the analysis of these data, and review approaches to and methods for characterizing bird migration phenology an
Cohomology of 3-dimensional color Lie algebras
We develop the cohomology theory of color Lie algebras due to Scheunert-Zhang in a framework of non-homogeneous quadratic Koszul algebras. In this approach, the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of a color Lie algebra becomes a standard Koszul complex for its universal enveloping algebra, providing a constructive method for computation of cohomology. As an application, we compute cohomologies with trivi
Expression pattern of JunD after acute or chronic l-DOPA treatment: Comparison with DeltaFosB.
In this study, we have used 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats to examine changes in striatal junD and fosB/Delta fosB expression induced by acute and chronic treatment with (L)-DOPA (5 and 15 days). Changes at the protein levels were studied using Western immunoblotting while mRNA changes were compared using in situ hybridization histochemistry. We observed a significant increase in the level of Del
Body mass index and disability pension in middle-aged men--non-linear relations
BACKGROUND: Obesity has, in a number of studies, been found to correlate to disability and mortality, primarily due to diseases of the circulatory and musculoskeletal systems. In addition, an excess mortality among underweight subjects has been observed in previous studies. METHODS: Five complete birth-year cohorts (1926-1930) of male residents in Malmo (n = 7697) were invited to the survey at the
Sticky Landscapes and Smooth Experiences: The Biopwer of Tourism Mobilities in the Öresund Region
As landscapes become ordered according to certain sets of economic, political, ecological or social practices and discourses, other possible orderings become limited in their potential. The article illustrates this with an example taken from the field of tourism and place marketing. The empirical focus is golf experiences in Scania, Sweden, bookable by individual consumers over the Internet. The o

The Stroop Strategy Test: Investigation of a computerised version of the Stroop Test for classifying Swedish military servicemen
A computerised test termed the Stroop Strategy Test, utilising the Stroop effect, is described. To assess the test's usefulness and discriminant power, it was given to three military groups adjudged on the basis of interview and a test of intelligence to differ in their qualifications (61 men of Level 1, 41 of Level 2, and 17 of Level 3, in descending order) and a group of 16 men imprisoned or put
Resialylation of sialic acid deficit vascular endothelium, circulating cells and macromolecules may counteract the development of atherosclerosis: A hypothesis.
Deficit sialylation of vascular endothelium, circulating cells and macromolecules has been associated with the development of atherosclerosis. On the other hand, an elevated serum level of sialic acid is a long-lasting marker of atherosclerosis and complications from atherosclerosis. One may speculate that the inverse associations with atherosclerosis risk are due to some common underlying cause.
Complexity of factors related to outcome of neuropathic and neuroischaemic/ischaemic diabetic foot ulcers: a cohort study
We sought to identify factors related to short-term outcome of foot ulcers in patients with diabetes treated in a multidisciplinary system until healing was achieved. Consecutively presenting patients with diabetes and worst foot ulcer (Wagner grade 1-5, below ankle) (n = 2,511) were prospectively followed and treated according to a standardised protocol until healing was achieved or until death.
Association of systemic lupus erythematosus with C8orf13-BLK and ITGAM-ITGAX
Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a clinically heterogeneous disease in which the risk of disease is influenced by complex genetic and environmental contributions. Alleles of HLA-DRB1, IRF5, and STAT4 are established susceptibility genes; there is strong evidence for the existence of additional risk loci. Methods We genotyped more than 500,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)
Primary recovery of a genetically engineered Trichoderma reesei endoglucanase I (Cel 7B) fusion protein in cloud point extraction systems.
Here we present data to demonstrate how partitioning of a hydrophilic enzyme can be directed to the hydrophobic detergent-enriched phase of an aqueous two-phase system by addition of short stretches of amino acid residues to the protein molecule. The target enzyme was the industrially important endoglucanase I, EGI (endo-1,4-beta-D-glucan-4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4, Cel7B) of Trichoderma reese
Thermal radiation and effects on transport processes in solid oxide fuel cells
The major processes significant for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) characteristics are species transport, electrochemical reactions, electronic and ionic transport, heat transfer, and temperature distribution. Of particular significance is an accurate determination of the temperature distribution because material properties, chemical kinetics, and transport properties depend heavily on the temperatu
Lactobacillus plantarum 299v Enhances the Concentrations of Fecal Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Patients with Recurrent Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea.
Our objective was to document how intake of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v affects the concentrations of fecal organic acids during and after metronidazole treatment in 19 patients with recurrent Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Fecal samples were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. After intake of metronidazole a significant decrease in total short-chain fatty acids was seen in the pla
C-erbB-2 expression does not predict response to docetaxel or sequential methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil in advanced breast cancer
Breast cancer patients with c-erbB-2-positive tumours seem to benefit from anthracycline-based adjuvant chemotherapy. The predictive value of c-erbB-2 for taxane sensitivity is not yet clear. The purpose of this study was to assess whether c-erbB-2 expression is associated with clinical sensitivity to docetaxel (T) or sequential methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil (MF). A total of 283 patients with me
