The EU's Normative Power : Its Greatest Strength or its Greatest Weakness?

The growing influence of the European Union (EU) on the international political arena and at the same time its “particular kind” of characteristics as an international player appears to be a widely debated issue among various scholars of social sciences over the last decades. During this period a wide range of theories and concepts have attributed various epithets to the EU and tried to explain it

ParA and ParB coordinate chromosome segregation with cell elongation and division during Streptomyces sporulation

In unicellular bacteria, the ParA and ParB proteins segregate chromosomes and coordinate this process with cell division and chromosome replication. During sporulation of mycelial Streptomyces, ParA and ParB uniformly distribute multiple chromosomes along the filamentous sporogenic hyphal compartment, which then differentiates into a chain of unigenomic spores. However, chromosome segregation must

Discourse Analysis —A Critical or Relativistic Perspective in Music Education?

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the problems I have encountered under the development of the theoretical perspective of my thesis. First, discourse analysis is founded in social constructionism and post-structuralistic theory. Second, discourse analysis is a concept including different perspectives, where both more critical approaches with focus on discourses as determining and more relati

Experimental studies of turbulent flames at gas turbine relevant burners and operating conditions

With the increasing demand of using alternative and renewable fuels, it becomes of vital importance to consider the fuel flexibility when designing a new burner for gas turbines. Hydrogen-enriched fuel and ammonia are two of these potential fuels, and they can significantly change the operability range of the gas turbines. Thus, it is necessary to enhance both the fundamental understanding on turb

A Distinctive Adnexal (Usually Paratubal) Neoplasm Often Associated with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome and Characterized by STK11 Alterations (STK11 Adnexal Tumor) : A Report of 22 Cases

We describe 22 examples of a novel, usually paratubal, adnexal tumor associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in nearly 50% of cases that harbored STK11 alterations in all tested (n=21). The patients ranged from 17 to 66 years (median=39 y) and the tumors from 4.5 to 25.5 cm (median=11 cm). Most (n=18) were paratubal, with metastases noted in 11/22 (50%) and recurrences in 12/15 (80%). Morphological

All-sky visible and near infrared space astrometry

The era of all-sky space astrometry began with the Hipparcos mission in 1989 and provided the first very accurate catalogue of apparent magnitudes, positions, parallaxes and proper motions of 120 000 bright stars at the milliarcsec (or milliarcsec per year) accuracy level. Hipparcos has now been superseded by the results of the Gaia mission. The second Gaia data release contained astrometric data

Survival of infants born with esophageal atresia among 24 international birth defects surveillance programs

Background: Esophageal atresia (EA) affects around 2.3–2.6 per 10,000 births world-wide. Infants born with this condition require surgical correction soon after birth. Most survival studies of infants with EA are locally or regionally based. We aimed to describe survival across multiple world regions. Methods: We included infants diagnosed with EA between 1980 and 2015 from 24 birth defects survei

Routine blood tests are associated with short term mortality and can improve emergency department triage : A cohort study of >12,000 patients

Background: Prioritization of acutely ill patients in the Emergency Department remains a challenge. We aimed to evaluate whether routine blood tests can predict mortality in unselected patients in an emergency department and to compare risk prediction with a formalized triage algorithm. Methods: A prospective observational cohort study of 12,661 consecutive admissions to the Emergency Department o

18th congress of european mycologists bioblitz 2019 – naturalists contribute to the knowledge of mycobiota and lichenobiota of białowieża primeval forest

A total of 561 records of 233 species of fungi are reported from the Polish part of Białowieża Forest as a result of a short-term inventory that was conducted during the 18th Congress of European Mycologists (September 18–29, 2019). Four species new to Poland (Bryocentria brongniartii, Tremella coppinsii, T. hypocenomycis, and Zevadia peroccidentalis), and eight species new to Białowieża Primeval

An influential child of its time: Victim Support Sweden and the changing discourse on violence against women

This article aims to describe and analyse the policy work by Sweden’s largest victim support organization – the Swedish Association for Victim Support (BOJ) – in the area of violence against women. The article is based on a study of BOJ’s national archive and interviews with key figures in the organization. We analysed the material within the context of contemporary governing political ideas in th

Disseqt-distribution-based modeling of sequence space time dynamics

Rapidly evolving microbes are a challenge to model because of the volatile, complex, and dynamic nature of their populations. We developed the DISSEQT pipeline (DIStribution-based SEQuence space Time dynamics) for analyzing, visualizing, and predicting the evolution of heterogeneous biological populations in multidimensional genetic space, suited for population-based modeling of deep sequencing an

Instantaneous impulses in multibody dynamics

This paper considers instantaneous impulses in multibody dynamics. Instantaneous impulses may act on the multibody from its exterior or they may appear in its interior as a consequence of two of its parts interacting by an impact imposed by a unilateral constraint. The theory is based on the Euler laws of instantaneous impulses, which may be seen as a complement to the Euler laws for regular motio

The Posterior Cerebral Artery and its Main Cortical Branches Identified with Noninvasive Transcranial Color-Coded Duplex Sonography

Purpose: To differentiate PCA segments and cortical branches by means of transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCD) and to measure flow parameters at rest and during visual stimulation. Materials and Methods: 60 healthy subjects with a good acoustic temporal bone window were examined. The main stem of the PCA (P1, P2 and P3) and 4 main cortical branches-the anterior temporal artery (ATA), t

Rectal washout does not increase the complication risk after anterior resection for rectal cancer

Background: To reduce local recurrence risk, rectal washout (RW) is integrated in the total mesorectal excision (TME) technique when performing anterior resection (AR) for rectal cancer. Although RW is considered a safe practice, data on the complication risk are scarce. Our aim was to examine the association between RW and 30-day postoperative complications after AR for rectal cancer. Methods: Pa

NG2/CSPG4, CD146/MCAM and VAP1/AOC3 are regulated by myocardin-related transcription factors in smooth muscle cells

The present work addressed the hypothesis that NG2/CSPG4, CD146/MCAM, and VAP1/AOC3 are target genes of myocardin-related transcription factors (MRTFs: myocardin/MYOCD, MRTF-A/MKL1, MRTF-B/MKL2) and serum response factor (SRF). Using a bioinformatics approach, we found that CSPG4, MCAM, and AOC3 correlate with MYOCD, MRTF-A/MKL1, and SRF across human tissues. No other transcription factor correlat
