Introduction

This text presents the background and overall aims of the project Experi- mental Archaeology – Between Enlightenment and Experience, the contents of this book in general and also the preceding regional workshops held in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The concluding vision is that the project will contribute to the initiation of a true and unlimited experi- mental archaeology that is given a possibili

Polarization transfer solid-state NMR for studying soft matter: From surfactants to the stratum corneum

Popular Abstract in English The word “motion” usually brings to mind movement from point A to point B. In the world of chemistry, this kind of motion is typically referred to as translational motion. Its consequences are experienced by us every time we smell a scent in the air or watch a dye spread in water. The fragrance is nothing else than molecules that fly in the air. Colour is molecules swimThe work presented in this thesis is dedicated to theoretical development, experimental testing and application of polarization transfer solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (PT ssNMR). PT ssNMR is an analytical tool which provides detailed information about molecular mobility in model or simple soft matter systems at the low water content regime, enabling the creation of phase diagrams. Soft ma

The spectro point spread function for GAIA

We discuss the point spread function for the Spectro instrument based on realistic effects of the time delayed integration, transverse image motion and pixelization, but assuming rather small wave front errors. Stars brighter than 10 mag, which will saturate the CCD, may be observed photometrically using the image wings, but the central wavelengths will be slightly shifted towards the red.

Vad jurister behöver veta om medier

Hur skildras rättsväsendet i medierna?

This article shows a range of ways how to bring the past to life with the aid of full-scale reconstructions. During the past century a broad variety of strategies to bring the past to life in a physical sense have been used in connection with cultural heritage sites. This text shows examples of these strategies and reflects upon the public impact of different ways of reconstructing buildings and o

A Sustainability Assessment of the Urban Rehabilitation Project of the Medina of Fez, Morocco

The old city of Fez, Morocco, classified as Heritage of Humankind by the UNESCO, is subject to an integrated rehabilitation plan running over 15 years. The plan aims at restoring and preserving the economy, cultural value, and social heritage of the old city. The study follows a system dynamics approach to describe and analyze the rehabilitation plan in order to identify the strengths and defects

Development under the surface– unintended consequences of settler institutions in Southern Rhodesia, 1896-1962

According to the debate on the long-term impact of colonialism, the central concern is the institutions the colonial powers imposed on the colonies. The main line of argument in this paradigm is that such institutions, once jelled, persisted and provide explanations to current-day development success or failure. While this ‘from above’ perspective might be natural and reflect the fact that colonia

Ecological Housing - for whom?

The purpose of the study was to analyse whether the individuals that have chosen ecological housing as a form of life, succeed in realising their ideal environmental lifestyle or not and if not, why? The method used was in-depth interviews with residents in an ecological village. Living in an ecological village has different meanings for different households and the impact of living in the village

How much information is needed for usage-based reading? A series of experiments

Software inspections are regarded as an important technique to detect faults throughout the software development process. The individual preparation phase of software inspections has enlarged its focus from only comprehension to also include fault searching. Hence, reading techniques to support the reviewers on fault detection are needed. Usage-based reading (UBR) is a reading technique, which foc
