A career as a historian?

Are there jobs for historians?

Yes.

Although, since history is a theoretical subject at university, not a vocational training, it is not always obvious that the analyst, archivist, librarian, administrator, journalist, teacher, or editor you speak to has studied history.

The job market is broad, ranging from work in the cultural sector – for example in museums or archives – to work as an administrator and investigator in administration, or as a cultural writer or public educator.

You can read about the usefulness of the education in report in Swedish from the Department of History.

History students' paths to jobs

What will I be good at?

You will learn a lot about history if you study with us. Historical factual knowledge can be fun to have, and historical knowledge can be used to distinguish the uneducated from the educated. But the academic discipline of history is so much more! Being able to account for a certain historical development, being able to explain events in historical time, and being able to assess claims about history - this is where your historical competence will come into play.
