Studying Cases Empirically: A Sociological Method for Studying Discrimination Cases in Sweden

This paper uses two previous studies of unlawful discrimination, which I carried out in Sweden in 1992 and 1996, to develop a more comprehensive sociological method for studying anti-discrimination laws. The initial question asked in these studies concerned the impact of the Swedish Act against Ethnic Discrimination (the AED), i.e. how the legal system dealt with unlawful discrimination and to wha

Fungi a driving force in normalisation of the terrestrial cabon cycle following the end-cretaceous extinction

Geologists have long recognized the magnitude, abruptness, and the global pattern of the major biotic turnover across the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary approximately 65.5 million years ago. It was associated with one of the most catastrophic events in the history of life, involving mass mortality in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems globally; vast amounts of dead biomass covered the Ea

Tjänstens triad: Från ömsesidig harmoni till dialektisk spänning i tjänstemöten

Models of service encounters are often fraught by reductionism, describing business relationships as mathematical combinations of dyadic constellations. Metaphors of ideal social relationships (marriages or friendships) are highlighted to stress normative aspects of equal, balanced and long-term business partnerships. However, these approaches are limited in their analytical sensitivity, as they c

A traffic density model for radio overlapping in urban Vehicular Ad hoc Networks

Vehicular traffic density is a key factor in determining the behaviour of radio overlapping and thus impacts performance of data and safety message communication in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs). In this paper, we propose a novel density model for urban traffic systems and employ this model for the purpose of spatial-temporal analysis of radio overlapping. To model traffic density, we conside

Foam Formation and Starch Gelatinization with Alpha-Crystalline Emulsifiers

Popular Abstract in Swedish I bageriindustrin används emulgatorer i så kallad alfaform för att tårtbottnar ska kunna vispas i ett steg och ändå få en stor luftvolym. Avhandlingen fokuserar på vissa av emulgatorns effekter i produkter såsom kaksmet: Hur skumbildningen påverkas av emulgatormolekylernas packning, hur emulgatorer ändrar svällningen av stärkelsekornen i mjölet, och vilka effekterna bliIn the baking industry, emulsifiers in the alpha-gel state are used for foam formation. This thesis focuses on some parts of the effects of the emulsifier: how the foam formation and foam stability are influenced by the physical state of the emulsifier, how emulsifiers change the gelatinization and gel formation of starch, and the impact that these factors may have in a true product such as a spon

From particle physics to photon science: Multidimensional and multilevel renewal at DESY and SLAC

Studies of institutional transformation in science have largely overlooked Big Science installations, despite far-reaching changes to the roles and functions of such large labs in the past decades. Here, we present and analyze two Big Science labs that have undergone profound transformations from single-purpose particle physics labs to multi-purpose centers for so-called photon science: SLAC in th

StuThis thesis focuses on three areas: 1. the implementation of Multisystemic Therapy (MST) as a treatment method in social services in Sweden, 2. the implementation of a research project that has the aim to evaluate MST as a treatment method, 3. the evaluation of MST as a treatment method compared to traditional social services for antisocial adolescents in Sweden. The first study reports on the imp

Making a vocal tract closure longer and shorter

This study examined lip and tongue kinematics in stop and fricative consonants of different durations. Native speakers of Japanese served as subjects. An analysis of the lower lip closing movement indicated that it differed for the long and short labial consonants. In particular, the lower lip reached its highest vertical position later during the closure for the long than for the short consonants

Statistical Physics of DNA: Melting and Confinement Effects

DNA-smältning är inte bara relevant för förståelsen av denna molekylsInvestigation of single macromolecules makes it possible to gain insight into and characterize important biological processes. DNA as the molecule of life is of special interest here. In this thesis tools from statistical physics are used to study different aspects of DNA confined to nanochannels, with particular regard to its denaturation properties. The study of DNA melting from the theoretical
