Nonlinear dimensionality reduction of gene expression data

Using microarray measurements techniques, it is possible to measure the activity of genes simultaneously across the whole genome. Since genes influence each others activity levels through complex regulatory networks, such gene expression measurements are state samples of a dynamical system. Gene expression data has proven useful for diagnosis and definition of disease subgroups, for inference of t

Archimedean spiral antenna for underground soil measurements in Greenland

In this paper, we present a thin single-arm Archimedean spiral antenna designed to be used in underground soil measurements to characterize the dielectric properties of soil during freezing and thawing processes. The designed antenna works in low permittivity, low-loss frozen soil as well as in high permittivity, high-loss marshy soil and operates over the frequency range 1–3 GHz. The antennas has

Iterative equalizer using soft-decoder feedback for MIMO systems in frequency-selective fading

Signals transmitted through Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems suffer from multiple access interference (MAI), multipath propagation and additive noise. For such systems, iterative multi-user receivers offer a good tradeoff between performance and complexity. In this paper, the complete structure of such an iterative receiver is presented. It comprises channel estimator, multi-user dete

Paradigm Petrification in the Information Age. An Anatomisation of Knowledge Creation and Deliberation in Innovation Systems in the Human Services

In human service organisations, evidence-based practice (EBP) implies that practice and decision-making should be guided by empirical evidence in a systematic way. Policy makers and researchers argue that practitioners in many fields do not apply state-of-the-art methods and that they should rely on evidence in a more systematic way. Among the suggested reasons for this state of affairs we note la

Distortion and error reduction in a class D power stage using feedback

In this paper a method for minimizing the total harmonic distortion (THD) is presented for a class-D output stage by optimizing a loop filter. A second-order filter is chosen to create large error suppression through the audio band while keeping the overall system complexity low. The stability of the optimized loop is examined to ensure proper operation. SIMULINK simulations are given to verify th

The polarizability and the capacitance change of a bounded object in a parallel plate capacitor

A method to solve the change in capacitance of an object in a parallel plate capacitor is developed. The integral representation of the potential is exploited in a systematic way to solve the potential everywhere inside the capacitor. In particular, the change in capacitance is extracted. The method shows similarities with the null field approach to solve dynamical problems.

On Matching Markets

This thesis gives a contribution to matching theory. It examines three one-to-one matching models: the roommate problem, the partnership formation problem and the assignment game. In the former two, it is known that stable matchings may not exist. In the latter, stable outcomes do exist; we examine if they still do if we generalize the model. The thesis consists of three separate papers. In the f

Regions, absorptive capacity and strategic coupling with hightech TNCs: Lessons from India and China

This article is concerned with what conditions successful development of high-tech regions in developing countries. It argues that the recent regional turn in development studies should be welcomed as regions play an increasingly important role for high-tech industries in developed and developing countries. While acknowledging the insights stemming from the regional turn the article nevertheless a
