Magnesium status in Crohns disease as evaluated by intracellular analysis and intravenous magnesium infusion

The magnesium status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease and in 30 controls. Subjects with Crohn's disease had lower concentrations of magnesium in muscle biopsy specimens (p less than 0.001), mononuclear cells (p less than 0.05), and in urine collected during 24 h (p less than 0.001) as compared with controls. After intravenous infusion of 60 mmol magnesium and 80 mmol potassium to

Evaluation of zinc status in subjects with Crohn's disease

Zinc status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease. Intestinal resection had previously been performed in 23 of the subjects. The concentrations of zinc were determined in plasma, erythrocytes, percutaneous muscle biopsies, and in urine collected during 24 hours. The results were compared with those in 19 healthy controls. Most of the patients had a normal zinc status. The levels of zinZinc status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease. Magnesium, potassium and zinc deficiency in patients with type II diabetes mellitus

The concentrations of magnesium, potassium and zinc were determined in plasma, erythrocytes, muscle biopsies, and in urine collected during 24 hours, in 18 subjects with type II diabetes mellitus (DM). Magnesium was also determined in mononuclear cells. The results were compared with those in 35 (magnesium and potassium analyses) or 26 (zinc analyses) healthy controls. Subjects with type II DM had

Djurparkens inneboende mörker

Fotografen Julia Lindemalm frågar sig i boken Zoo World vilken rätt vi har att ställa ut levande varelser. I artikeln presenteras Julia Lindemalms fotoprojekt.

Pengar har hittat in i hästböckerna

Insect Navigation : Neural Basis to Behavior

Navigation is the ability of animals to move through their environment in a planned manner. Different from directed but reflex-driven movements, it involves the comparison of the animal’s current heading with its intended heading (i.e., the goal direction). When the two angles don’t match, a compensatory steering movement must be initiated. This basic scenario can be described as an elementary nav

International benchmarking in oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery

Background: Benchmarking on an international level might lead to improved outcomes at a national level. The aim of this study was to compare treatment and surgical outcome data from the Swedish National Register for Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer (NREV) and the Dutch Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Audit (DUCA).Methods: All patients with primary oesophageal or gastric cancer who underwent a resectio

A new vessel segmentation algorithm for robust blood flow quantification from two-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance images

Blood flow measurements in the ascending aorta and pulmonary artery from phase-contrast magnetic resonance images require accurate time-resolved vessel segmentation over the cardiac cycle. Current semi-automatic segmentation methods often involve time consuming manual correction, relying on user experience for accurate results. The purpose of this study was to develop a semi-automatic vessel segme

Telomerase reverse transcriptase expression is increased early in the Barrett's metaplasia, dysplasia, adenocarcinoma sequence

Barrett's esophagus is a multistage polyclonal disease that is associated with the development of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and esophagogastric junction. Telomerase activation is associated with cellular immortality and carcinogenesis, and increased expression of the telomerase reverse transcriptase catalytic subunit (hTERT) has been used for the early detection of malignant diseases. To ide

Suppression of gastric acid secretion in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease results in gastric bacterial overgrowth and deconjugation of bile acids

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that gastric bacterial overgrowth is a side effect of acid suppression therapy in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and that the bacteria-contaminated gastric milieu is responsible for an increased amount of deconjugated bile acids. Thirty patients with GERD who were treated with 40 mg of omeprazole for at least 3 months and 10 pa

Cardiac mucosa in the remnant esophagus after esophagectomy is an acquired epithelium with Barrett's-like features

BACKGROUND: The cervical esophagus is normally lined by squamous epithelium and is usually not exposed to gastroesophageal reflux. The aims of this study were, first, to investigate whether cardiac mucosa can be acquired in the remnant cervical esophagus after esophagectomy and cervical esophagogastrostomy and, second, to characterize this mucosa if present.METHODS: The medical records of 100 pati

Risk factors and the prevalence of trocar site herniation after laparoscopic fundoplication

BACKGROUND: Although there have been case reports describing trocar site herniation after laparoscopic fundoplication, its overall prevalence and the risk factors for its development are unclear.METHODS: The records of 320 patients undergoing primary laparoscopic fundoplication as treatment for gastroesophageal reflex disease (GERD) or hiatal hernia between 1991 and 1999 were reviewed retrospectiv
