Alcohol intake as a risk factor for fracture

High intakes of alcohol have adverse effects on skeletal health, but evidence for the effects of moderate consumption are less secure. The aim of this study was to quantify this risk on an international basis and explore the relationship of this risk with age, sex, and bone mineral density (BMD). We studied 5,939 men and 11,032 women from three prospectively studied cohorts comprising CaMos, DOES,

Channel Statistics-Based RF-Pre-Processing with Antenna Selection

We introduce two novel joint radio-frequency (RF)-baseband designs for receivers in a MIMO system with Nt transmit antennas, Nr receive antennas, but only L < Nr RF chains at the receiver. The joint design introduces an RF pre-processing matrix that processes the signals from the different antennas, and is followed by selection (if necessary), down-conversion, and further processing in the baseban

Measurements of nonlinear harmonic generation at the Advanced Photon Source's SASE FEL

SASE saturation was recently achieved at the Advanced Photon Source's SASE FFL in the low-energy undulator test line at 530 nm and 385 urn. The electron beam microbunching becomes more and more prominent until saturation is achieved. This bunching causes nonlinear harmonic emission that extends the usefulness of a SASE system in achieving shorter FEL wavelengths for the same electron beam energy.

Elevated triiodothyronine in psychopathy - possible physiological mechanisms

We assessed a total range of peripheral thyroid hormone fractions, binding globulins, and thyroid-active antibodies in 37 medication-free, violent or sexual offenders, aged 17-45 years, to describe possible mechanisms involved in the thyroid metabolism of aggressive men. The ratio between T3 and T4 correlated with ratings of psychopathy, indicating increased peripheral deiodination as a biological

Some Extensions of Poincaré-Bendixson Theory Applied to a Resonant Converter.

Popular Abstract in Swedish I denna avhandling studeras en resonant omvandlare. Vissa av dessa gIn this thesis existence and uniqueness of limit cycles are shown for a resonant converter, by extending Poincaré-Bendixson theory to non-smooth vector fields. We discuss relevant control theory and the role of simulations.

Parodins dimensioner -komik, kritik eller ironi

The history of the term "parody" is sketched, and different theoretical traditions defining parody is described. The traditions are structured according to the theorist's description of the function of parody. Among these theories, Bachtin's theory of parody as a dialogical text has a prominent position.

Analysis of glycosaminoglycan chains from different proteoglycan populations in human embryonic skin fibroblasts

1. The structure of chondroitin/dermatan and heparan-sulphate chains from various proteoglycan populations derived from cultured human skin fibroblasts have been examined. Confluent cell cultures were biosynthetically labelled with [3H]-glucosamine and 35SO4(2-), and proteoglycans were purified according to buoyant density, size and charge density [Schmidtchen, A., Carlstedt, I., Malmstrom, A. &am

Radiation dosimetry for indium-111-labeled anti-CEA-F(ab')2 fragments evaluated from tissue distribution in rats

Accurate dosimetric investigations are important to be able to fulfill the ambition of radiation protection in nuclear medicine and to minimize the radiation burden to the patient. This paper presents human radiation absorbed dose estimates following an administration of an 111In-labeled anti-CEA-F(ab')2 (BW431/31) based on detailed biodistribution and elimination data in a rat model. Animals were

An evaluation of a dynamic model of the secondary clarifier

The main objective of the paper is to support and illustrate recent theoretical results on the mathematical modelling of the secondary clarifier. A new settler model is compared with a traditional layer model by means of numerical simulations. Emphasis is put on the numerical solution's ability to approximate the analytical solution of the conservation law written as a non-linear partial different
