Three new species of Valeriana (Valerianoideae, Caprifoliaceae) from southern Ecuador

Three new species of Valeriana from southern Ecuador are described and illustrated. Valeriana plateadensis is found near the highest peak of Cerro Plateado in Cordillera del Cóndor at 2900 m a.s.l. and is recognized by the shrubby habit and sessile, densely imbricate, spatulate leaves and 3-lobed corollas. V. yacuriensis is found near Lagunas Negras de Jimbura in the Parque Nacional Yacurí at 3500

Extending Microservice Model Validity using Universal Differential Equations

When creating models of a system, there is always a tradeoff between the ease of modelling a part and the increased value it brings to the model. Learning a model using machine learning instead, we are able to capture all kinds of things we don't necessarily understand, but can need large amounts of data to learn even the things we find simple. Using universal differential equations we can combine

N-BAR and F-BAR proteins - Endophilin-A3 and PSTPIP1 - control clathrin-independent endocytosis of L1CAM

Recent advances in the field demonstrate the high diversity and complexity of endocytic pathways. In the current study, we focus on the endocytosis of L1CAM. This glycoprotein plays a major role in the development of the nervous system, and is involved in cancer development and is associated with metastases and poor prognosis. Two L1CAM isoforms are subject to endocytosis: isoform 1, described as

An evidence-based approach to forensic life-threat assessments using spleen injuries as an example

INTRODUCTION: During the judicial process of addressing violent crime, a forensic practitioner may need to assess whether an inflicted injury should be considered life-threatening. This could be important for the classification of the crime. To some extent, these assessments are arbitrary since the natural course of an injury might not be completely known. To guide the assessment, a quantitative a

Framing Positive Obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights Law: Mediating between the Abstract and the Concrete

This article examines positive obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights from the perspective of the level of concreteness chosen for their framing. This level is essential for understanding whether and how the analytical distinction between the existence of an obligation and the breach of this obligation can be applied. The level of concreteness is an important conceptual framewor

Changes to consultations and diagnosis of osteoarthritis in primary care during the COVID-19 pandemic

OBJECTIVE: General practitioners (GP) are often the first medical professionals to treat musculoskeletal complaints. Yet the impact of COVID-19 on primary care utilisation for musculoskeletal complaints is largely unknown. This study quantifies the impact of the pandemic on primary care utilisation for musculoskeletal complaints and specifically osteoarthritis (OA) in the Netherlands.DESIGN: We ex

Cardiac Asystole at Birth Re-Visited : Effects of Acute Hypovolemic Shock

Births involving shoulder dystocia or tight nuchal cords can deteriorate rapidly. The fetus may have had a reassuring tracing just before birth yet may be born without any heartbeat (asystole). Since the publication of our first article on cardiac asystole with two cases, five similar cases have been published. We suggest that these infants shift blood to the placenta due to the tight squeeze of t

Follow-up and screening for type-2 diabetes mellitus in women with previous gestational diabetes in primary care

ObjectiveGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an established risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that is possible to prevent by systematic follow-up and preventive measures. The aim of this study was to examine whether women with previous GDM were offered follow-up in primary care, according to Swedish national guidelines.DesignRetrospective review of electronic medical re
