Small bowel obstruction and toxicity of a new model of adhesion prevention
Abstract Background: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical diagnosis. If no signs of strangulation are evident, the majority of the patients can be conservatively managed. Approximately one third of the patients need surgical treatment and there is a need for early parameters that can predict operative intervention. The etiology of SBO in most cases is postoperative abdominal adhesion
Access to social capital and risk of HIV infection in Bukoba urban district, Kagera region, Tanzania.
Kagera is one of the 22 regions of Tanzania mainland, which has witnessed a decline in HIV prevalence during the past two decades; decreasing from 24% in 1987 to 4.7 in 2009 in the urban district of Bukoba. Access to social capital, both structural and cognitive, might have played a role in this development. The aim was to examine the association between individual structural and cognitive social
Adiabatic laminar burning velocities of CH4 + H2 + air flames at low pressures
Experimental measurements of the adiabatic burning velocity in methane + hydrogen + air flames using the Heat Flux method are presented. The hydrogen content in the fuel was varied from 0 to 20%. Non-stretched flames were stabilized on a perforated plate burner from 20 to 100 kPa. The equivalence ratio was varied from 0.8 to 1.4. Adiabatic burning velocities of CH4 + H-2 + air mixtures were found

This study aimed to assess the impact of the current economic crisis on mortality trends in Spain and its effect on social inequalities in mortality in Andalusia. We used data from vital statistics and the Population Register for 1999 to 2011, as provided by the Spanish Institute of Statistics, to estimate general and sex- and age-specific mortality rates. The Longitudinal Database of the Andalusi

Weighted interpolation in Paley-Wiener spaces and finite-time controllability
This paper considers the solution of weighted interpolation problems in model subspaces of the Hardy space H-2 that are canonically isometric to Paley-Wiener spaces of analytic functions A new necessary and sufficient condition is given on the set of interpolation points which guarantees that a solution in H-2 can be transferred to a solution in a model space. The techniques used rely on the repro
Tunable zero-field Kondo splitting in a quantum dot
We present detailed low-temperature transport measurements of a single quantum dot formed in an InGaAs/InP heterostructure with a strong tunnel coupling to the source and drain leads. The conventional spin-1/2 Kondo effect is observed for the quantum dot in the N = 9 charge state. By changing the voltages applied to the quantum dot barrier gates, we find a zero-field splitting of the Kondo resonan
Analysis of a set of missense, frameshift, and in-frame deletion variants of BRCA1
Germline Mutations that inactivate BRCA1 are responsible for breast and ovarian cancer Susceptibility. one possible outcome of genetic testing for BRCA1 is the finding of a genetic variant of uncertain significance for which there is no information regarding its cancer association. This outcome leads to problems ill risk assessment, Counseling and preventive care. The purpose of the present study
Risk preferences as determinants of soil conservation decisions in Ethiopia
Soil degradation is one of the most serious environmental problems in the highlands of Ethiopia. The prevalence of traditional agricultural land use and the absence of appropriate resource management often result in the degradation of natural soil fertility. This has important implications for soil productivity, household food security, and poverty. Given the extreme vulnerability of farmers in th

Transforming the “efficiency gap” into a viable business opportunity: lessons learned from the ESCO experience in Sweden
Energy service companies (ESCOs) are often portrayed as important change agents in capturing energy efficiency opportunities to curb global energy demand and mitigate climate change. Yet, the literature in this area is limited. While many studies analyze economic and environmental impacts from energy efficiency programs, far less attention has been devoted to evaluating managerial and other challe

Neutrophils and extracellular traps in abdominal sepsis
Abdominal sepsis is associated with changes in systemic inflammation response and coagulation homeostasis. Excessive neutrophil activation is a key regulator in both pro-inflammatory immune response and septic lung injury. Neutrophil-derived DNA may form extracellular traps in response to invading pathogens. To examine the role of neutrophil extracellular traps for septic lung injury and systemic
Electric quadrupole moments of the 2(1)(+) states in Cd-100,Cd-102,Cd-104
Using the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN the Coulomb excitation cross sections for the 0(gs)(+)-> 2(1)(+) transition in the beta-unstable isotopes Cd-100,Cd-102,Cd-104 have been measured for the first time. Two different targets were used, which allows for the first extraction of the static electric quadrupole moments Q(2(1)(+)) in Cd-102,Cd-104. In addition to the B(E2) values in Cd-102,Cd-104, a fi
PARENTS’ POSTNATAL SENSE OF SECURITY (PPSS)- developing an instrument and description of important factors based on mothers’ and fathers’ experiences
The overall aim of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a specific instrument, measuring both mothers’ and fathers’ postnatal sense of security during the first postnatal week, and to explore and describe important factors associated with this. Data was collected from 2003 to 2009. The thesis has a methodological (Paper I), an evaluative (Paper II) and an explorative and descriptive design (P
