Japan’s Support for Women’s Equality Doesn’t Extend to Domestic Reform : Anxieties around imperial succession have exposed the nation’s lack of gender parity
Spanning Divides : Prospecting, Facilitating, and Building Narrative Bridges in Interdisciplinary Professional Education
This paper addresses the use of narrative in interdisciplinary professional education as a device for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, insights, or methods between persons and knowledge domains, but also for their integration and transformation into burgeoning professional judgement. The paper considers an elective course for engineering students, in which emerging technology ethics are appro
The Dynamics of Detach and Connect when using Autobiography in Professional Education
The paper reports on preliminary findings from a case study of an autobiography-based course element included in the social work professional education program of a Swedish university. In the studied course element, the aim was for autobiographies to provide a platform and catalyst for student reflections on client perspectives as well as for reflexivity in relation to students’ own frames of refe

Narrative Art as a Pedagogical Tool in Professional Ethics Education
Research topic/aim:The purpose of this paper is to contribute empirically to the ongoing academic discussion about the meaningful implementation of narrative art as a pedagogical tool in professional ethics education (PEE). In the present work, meaningfulness is conceived of as connectedness, and narrative art includes literary fiction and autobiography. Research questions are:How do students in e
Wuthering Weights—Localisation Trajectories of Machine Learning Models for Local Ends
This chapter analyses trajectories of contextual reconstruction of machine learning models with calibrated weights, sometimes known as pre-trained or foundation models, as they are made operational in specific settings. Through ethnographic vignettes on car detection, bird tracking, and medical technology, it underscores the importance of cooperation and negotiation among actors facing contingenci
Injecting conflict situations in autonomous driving simulation using CARLA
Simulation of conflict situations for autonomous driving research is crucial for understanding and managing interactions between Automated Vehicles (AVs) and human drivers. This paper presents a set of exemplary conflict scenarios in CARLA that arise in shared autonomy settings, where both AVs and human drivers must navigate complex traffic environments. We explore various conflict situations, foc
Sociology of Islamic public administration : Ethnographic and socio-legal perspectives
This chapter argues that for public administration research to genuinely advance in non-Western contexts, scholars must at a minimum be familiar with, and ideally engage with, local cultural norms, traditions, and epistemes vis-à-vis their research. To that end, we offer a methodological shift towards ethnographic approaches to better understand and analyse contemporary PA practices, focusing on t
The impregnable fortress of Islamic public administration in Central Asia : Mahalla institutions in Uzbekistan
There was a widespread euphoria in the 1990s in Uzbekistan and other post-Soviet societies at the prospect that introducing Western-style public administration (PA) institutions and traditions would play a pivotal role in promoting the rule of law and democratisation. Like other newly independent post-Soviet states, Uzbekistan has become a “laboratory” for testing various global (Western) PA model
Large Eddy Simulation of a model jet-engine swirl-stabilized flame using sustainable aviation fuels
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) typically exhibit a composition that differs significantly from conventional jet fuels. These variations in chemical makeup influence the thermophysical and reactive properties of these propellants. In this study, Finite-Rate Chemistry (FRC) Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are employed to investigate turbulent spray flames from a Triple Annular Research Swirler (TARS)
Multidimensional chemistry coordinate mapping for Large Eddy Simulations of a turbulent premixed bluff-body burner
In numerical combustion research, accurate chemical reaction mechanisms for heavy hydrocarbons are essential to investigate the flame dynamics of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) relative to conventional jet fuels. However, accounting for hundreds or thousands of reactions makes Finite-Rate Chemistry (FRC) Large Eddy Simulations (LES) impractical for realistic engineering scenarios. In the present
Challenges and the Way Forward in a Difficult Development Landscape: Achieving a Sustainable Future in Africa and Its Sahel Region
This handbook brings together a collection of seminal research on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and investigates the effectiveness of the 17 goals for achieving transformative change toward sustainable development. As a collection of inter- and transdisciplinary research from around the world, this volume explores the applications, implications, and best practices of the goals at thematiWhen the world committed to end poverty and hunger as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the promise to “leave no one behind” was recognized as both an ethical responsibility and a key criteria for success. How can we make sure that such a promise becomes a reality, and what challenges lie ahead? This chapter aims to address these issues by focusing on parts of the world that, despi
Framework for assessing situational awareness in Beyond Visual Line of Sight UAV operations
We present an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) human-robot interaction simulation environment to evaluate operator situational awareness (SA) during Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. We have developed a modular simulator that functions as a testbed for the design of custom scenarios and the study of human-robot interaction. This simulator facilitates data collection and allows for the c
Theorising notions of searching, (re)sources and evaluation in the light of generative AI
Introduction. The introduction of publicly available large language models (LLMs) since 2022 has significantly challenged traditional library and information studies (LIS) core concepts. This paper argues that LIS needs to rethink aspects of its conceptual framework to address the challenges posed by the proliferation of AI-generated content and how this content is produced.Analysis. The study emp
The Land of Opportunity? Social Class, Returns to Migration, and Occupational Mobility of Swedish Immigrants, 1880–1910
I study the economic returns to migration among Swedish immigrants in the United States in 1900 and 1910, by social class. Using linked data from full-count Swedish and US censuses via the Swedish Emigrant Register, I first estimate the rates of return to migration using two identification strategies, with the returns exceeding 60 percent, notably higher for migrants from lower social classes. Fur
