Extreme-resolution synchrotron X-Ray fluorescence mapping of ore samples

In order to maximise profit and sustainability of a mining operation, knowledge of the chemistry, mineralogy, texture, and structure of the ore is essential. Continuous advancements in analytical techniques enable studying these features with increasing detail. Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence is unparalleled in its simultaneously high spatial resolution and detection range. Yet, its appli

Size-induced amorphous structure in tungsten oxide nanoparticles

The properties of functional materials are intrinsically linked to their atomic structure. When going to the nanoscale, size-induced structural changes in atomic structure often occur, however these are rarely well-understood. Here, we systematically investigate the atomic structure of tungsten oxide nanoparticles as a function of the nanoparticle size and observe drastic changes when the particle

Reconciling the Carbon Balance of Northern Sweden Through Integration of Observations and Modelling

The boreal biome plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. However, current estimates of its sink-source strength and responses to changes in climate are primarily derived from models and thus remain uncertain. A major challenge is the validation of these models at a regional scale since empirical flux estimates are typically confined to ecosystem or continental scales. The Integrated Ca

Limitations of the radon tracer method (RTM) to estimate regional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - A case study for methane in Heidelberg

Correlations of nighttime atmospheric methane (CH4) and 222radon (222Rn) observations in Heidelberg, Germany, were evaluated with the radon tracer method (RTM) to estimate the trend of annual nocturnal CH4 emissions from 1996-2020 in the footprint of the station. After an initial 30ĝ€¯% decrease in emissions from 1996 to 2004, there was no further systematic trend but small inter-annual variations

Overcharging and Free Energy Barriers for Equally Charged Surfaces Immersed in Salt Solutions

The stability of dispersions containing charged particles may obviously be regulated by salt. In some systems, the effective charge, as measured by the potential some small distance away from the particles, can have a sign opposite to the bare surface charge. If charge reversal takes place, there is typically a salt concentration regime within which colloidal stability increases with added salt. T

Occurrence of crop pests and diseases has largely increased in China since 1970

Crop pests and diseases (CPDs) are emerging threats to global food security, but trends in the occurrence of pests and diseases remain largely unknown due to the lack of observations for major crop producers. Here, on the basis of a unique historical dataset with more than 5,500 statistical records, we found an increased occurrence of CPDs in every province of China, with the national average rate

Photoacoustic Imaging of Enucleated Eyes from Patients with Uveal Melanoma can Reveal Extrascleral Growth

Background:Uveal melanoma is treated by either enucleation (removal of the eye) or local eye-sparing therapies, depending on tumor size and whether there are signs of extrascleral growth. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a novel imaging modality that provides high-resolution images of the molecular composition of tissues. Objective:In this study, the feasibility of PA imaging for uveal melanomas and d

Heterogeneity of beta-cell function in subjects with multiple islet autoantibodies in the TEDDY family prevention study - TEFA

BACKGROUND: Individuals with multiple islet autoantibodies are at increased risk for clinical type 1 diabetes and may proceed gradually from stage to stage complicating the recruitment to secondary prevention studies. We evaluated multiple islet autoantibody positive subjects before randomisation for a clinical trial 1 month apart for beta-cell function, glucose metabolism and continuous glucose m

Improving generalisation capability of artificial intelligence-based solar radiation estimator models using a bio-inspired optimisation algorithm and multi-model approach

One way of reducing environmental pollution is to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by replacing them with solar radiation (Rs), which is one of the main sources of clean and renewable energy. In this study, daily Rs values at seven meteorological stations in Iran (Ahvaz, Isfahan, Kermanshah, Mashhad, Bandar Abbas, Kerman and Tabriz) over 2010-2019 were estimated using empirical models, suppor

Three-in-One C2H2-Selectivity-Guided Adsorptive Separation across an Isoreticular Family of Cationic Square-Lattice MOFs

Energy-efficient selective physisorption driven C2H2 separation from industrial C2-C1 impurities such as C2H4, CO2 and CH4 is of great importance in the purification of downstream commodity chemicals. We address this challenge employing a series of isoreticular cationic metal-organic frameworks, namely iMOF-nC (n=5, 6, 7). All three square lattice topology MOFs registered higher C2H2 uptakes versu

Toward a function-first framework to make soil microbial ecology predictive

Soil microbial communities perform vital ecosystem functions, such as the decomposition of organic matter to provide plant nutrition. However, despite the functional importance of soil microorganisms, attribution of ecosystem function to particular constituents of the microbial community has been impeded by a lack of information linking microbial function to community composition and structure. He

Telomeres in ecology and evolution : A review and classification of hypotheses

Research on telomeres in the fields of ecology and evolution has been rapidly expanding over the last two decades. This has resulted in the formulation of a multitude of, often name-given, hypotheses related to the associations between telomeres and life-history traits or fitness-facilitating processes (and the mechanisms underlying them). However, the differences (or similarities) between the var

Släktet Blastenia i Norden

A fiber-rich diet and radiation-induced injury in the murine intestinal mucosa

Dietary fiber is considered a strong intestinal protector, but we do not know whether dietary fiber protects against the long-lasting mucosal damage caused by ionizing radiation. To evaluate whether a fiber-rich diet can ameliorate the long-lasting pathophysiological hallmarks of the irradiated mucosa, C57BL/6J mice on a fiber-rich bioprocessed oat bran diet or a fiber-free diet received 32 Gray i

Den teoretiska utgångspunkten är ett sociokulturellt perspektiv ochThe aim of this study is to scrutinize what happens when a new music pedagogical approach is introduced in a context already dominated by another method. This is a qualitative research study using a narrative analysis method on two in depth interviews with two Danish Suzuki teacher trainers. The theoretical point of view is a sociocultural perspective and mainly cultural-historical activity theory

Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of helium above the N=2 ionization threshold

Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (ATAS) allows for the study of electron dynamics in atoms and molecules with attosecond time resolution. Previous works reported in the literature have made use of ATAS to image and control such dynamics in the single-channel ionization continuum of helium; in particular, in the vicinity of the doubly excited autoionizing states lying between the N=1and

Disentangling Spectral Phases of Interfering Autoionizing States from Attosecond Interferometric Measurements

We have determined spectral phases of Ne autoionizing states from extreme ultraviolet and midinfrared attosecond interferometric measurements and ab initio full-electron time-dependent theoretical calculations in an energy interval where several of these states are coherently populated. The retrieved phases exhibit a complex behavior as a function of photon energy, which is the consequence of the
