The Swedish Global Health Research Conference held in Stockholm, 18–19 April 2018, convened researchers from across Sweden’s universities to foster collaboration and new research. In response to the theme of the conference, How can Sweden contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals? From research to action, many of the plenary and keynote speakers highlighted the importance of interdisciplinar

Unequal poverty and equal industrialisation: Finnish wealth, 1750–1900

We present the first comprehensive, long-run estimates of Finnish wealth and its distribution from 1750 to 1900. Using wealth data from 17,279 probate inventories, we show that Finland was very unequal between 1750 and 1850; the top decile owned about 90% of total wealth. This means that Finland was more unequal than the much wealthier economies Britain, France and the US, which goes against the c

Does incubation lead to innovation? Evidence from the Swedish incubation program

This report addresses a potentially important effect of incubators, namely their impact on innovation. Using rich individual-level data on CEOs and employees and whether they are inventors (has patented), we can link these individuals to incubator firms and the general population of individuals and firms. In this way, we are able to create a matched sample of treated and controls allowing us to co

A Path for Improving Stroke Recovery. Effects of MEK-ERK1/2 Inhibition

The present thesis aimed to shed more light on the notion of acute inhibition of extracellular-signal regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 pathway as a treatment to improve stroke recovery. Stroke is a major cause of death and long-term disability worldwide, classified as ischemic or hemorrhagic. In ischemic stroke, interruption of blood flow and deprivation of oxygen and glucose activate death signalling pa

Climate Hazards, Disasters, and Gender Ramifications

Disasters, Ruins, and Crises: Masculinity and Ramifications of Storms in Vietnam

This article explores climate disasters in the era of the Anthropocene from a gender specific crisis perspective; as conditions of unpredictable outcomes and ruination which are encroaching differentiated ramifications upon inhabitants in coastal Vietnam. The article contests the ways in which the notions of vulnerability and resilience tend to understand a disaster as an interrupting event, which

ForensicVR: Investigating human behaviour in fire with Virtual Reality

A forensic investigation of a fire scene can provide insights on the circumstances of a fatal fire. However, people’s attitudes and subsequent behaviour can only be inferred. A full reconstruction in real life of a fatal fire is generally not possible due to ethical reasons regarding the serious threat people would be exposed to and the costs that such an experiment would have. We propose here the

Botswana – A Modern Economic History : an African diamond in the rough

Together with Mauritius, Botswana is often categorized as one of two growth miracles in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to its spectacular long-run economic performance and impressive social development, it has been termed both an economic success story and a developmental state. While there is uniqueness in the Botswana experience, several aspects of the country’s opportunities and challenges are of a mo

The production of geminates in Italian-dominant bilinguals and heritage speakers of Italian

This study examines cross-linguistic influence (CLI) in adult Italian-German bilinguals based on the production of gemination, a phenomenon that exists in Italian but not in German. We analyzed the spontaneous Italian speech of two groups of Italian-German bilinguals (heritage speakers of Italian and Italian-dominant bilinguals) and a monolingual Italian control group. The results show that the ge

En informationsteknisk atombomb : Lars Kristiansson och mikrodatorn, 1970–1983

In Sweden, the 1970s saw widespread public concerns about data privacy. The use of computers in the 1970 census sparked debate, and in 1973 Sweden's data privacy law, datalagen, came into force. In 1980, a parliamentary delegation was tasked with investigating further options for political action. In the years around 1980, computers, and how they should be used, was a topic of hot political and pu
