Protein kinase C expression in the rabbit retina after laser photocoagulation.

Background: Laser photocoagulation is a well-established treatment for diabetic retinopathy but the mechanism behind its effectiveness has not been elucidated. The protein kinase C (PKC) family is a group of enzymes which has been the subject of extensive interest in clinically related research since the advent of its role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. With this study we wanted to e

IFN-gamma- and TNF-independent vitamin D-inducible human suppression of mycobacteria: The role of cathelicidin LL-37

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with susceptibility to tuberculosis, and its biologically active metabolite, 1 alpha,25 dihydroxyvitamin D-3 (1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3), has pleiotropic immune effects. The mechanisms by which 1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3 protects against tuberculosis are incompletely understood. 1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3 reduced the growth of mycobacteria in infected human PBMC cultures in a dos

"What the patient would have decided": A fundamental problem with the substituted judgment standard.

Decision making for incompetent patients is a much-discussed topic in bioethics. According to one influential decision making standard, the substituted judgment standard, the decision that ought to be made for the incompetent patient is the decision the patient would have made, had he or she been competent. Although the merits of this standard have been extensively debated, some important issues h

Xafs Study of Co(Ii) Sorption at the Alpha-Al2o3-Water Interface

Aqueous Co(II) sorption onto alpha-Al2O3 at pH 8.1 and surface concentrations (Gamma) of 0.16 to 11.3 mu mol m(-2) has been studied by XAFS spectroscopy. At low Gamma, Co adsorbs in a monodentate fashion or in a bridging bidentate fashion and is present as small oligomers. A Co(OH)(2)-like phase forms at high Gamma.

Chromatography of living cells using supermacroporous hydrogels, cryogels

The preparative cell separation is an intrinsic requirement of various diagnostic, biotechnological and biomedical applications. Affinity chromatography is a promising technique for cell separation and is based on the interaction between a cell surface receptor and an immobilised ligand. Most of the currently available matrices have pore size smaller than the size of the cells and are not suitable

Mainstreaming risk reduction in urban planning and housing: a challenge for international aid organisations

The effects of 'natural' disasters in cities can be worse than in other environments, with poor and marginalised urban communities in the developing world being most at risk. To avoid post-disaster destruction and the forced eviction of these communities, proactive and preventive urban planning, including housing, is required. This paper examines current perceptions and practices within internatio

How does the language of the kontakia by Romanos address their liturgical context? This article presents a new translation of the poet’s famous Christmas Hymn and investigates liturgical aspects of the drama by proposing a liturgical reading of it. Furthermore it suggests that in retelling the story of the adoration of the Magi the Melodist tells the story of the adoration of the congregation. The

Halisaurus sternbergi, a small mosasaur with an intercontinental distribution

Remains of Halisaurus sternbergi (Wiman, 1920) from the latest Early Campanian (sensu germanico) of the Kristianstad Basin, southern Sweden, represent the first record of this species outside of the USA. The material comprises numerous marginal tooth-crowns, a premaxilla, an incomplete pterygoid, and vertebrae. The Kristianstad Basin population of H. sternbergi was probably derived from individual

Intravenous allopurinol decreases myocardial oxygen consumption and increases mechanical efficiency in dogs with pacing-induced heart failure

Allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, increases myofilament calcium responsiveness and blunts calcium cycling in isolated cardiac muscle. We sought to extend these observations to conscious dogs with and without pacing-induced heart failure and tested the prediction that allopurinol would have a positive inotropic effect without increasing energy expenditure, thereby increasing mechanical

Use of a hydrocapillary dressing in the management of highly exuding ulcers; a comparative study

Objective: To evaluate the safety and performance of Alione Hydrocapillary dressing (Coloplast A/S) in the management of highly exuding chronic venous leg ulcers and compare it with two hydropolymer dressings, Tielle and Tielle Plus (Johnson & Johnson). Method: A comparative clinical trial was conducted on 97 patients with an ankle brachial pressure index ?0.8 and a highly exuding leg ulcer. U
