Determination of atmospheric trace gas amounts and corresponding natural isotopic ratios by means of ground-based FTIR spectroscopy in the high Arctic
Abstract In the given report, scientific results gathered at the Alfred- Wegener- Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI) within an ScD contract are summarized. The AWI is the German large scale research facility for polar- and marine research. In January 1992 +he new research de- partment at Potsdam has been established with the section Physics und Chemistry of the Atmosphere. 1t coordinate
A high-resolution FT-IR study of the fundamental bands nu(6), nu(10), and nu(11) of trans-glyoxal
The high-resolution Fourier transform infrared spectrum of trans-glyoxal in the gas phase has been recorded in the spectral regions 700-900 cm(-1), 1200-1400 cm(-1), and 1600-1800 cm(-1) with a resolution ranging from 0.0020 to 0.0025 cm(-1). The spectrum displays extensive rotational structures which are assigned to the three fundamental bands upsilon(6) (A(u), 801.5 cm(-1)), upsilon(10) (B-u, 17
A New Approach for Determination of the Selectively Favoured Kinetic Design of Enzyme Reactions
A new criterion is applied for characterization of the kinetic design of enzymes that should be favoured by a selective pressure in the direction of increased metabolic reaction flux. According to this criterion, the selectively favoured state of a metabolic sequence of enzyme reactions conforming to Michaelis-Menten kinetics is identical with the uniform one which is known to optimize reaction fl

Approximation algorithms for Hamming clustering problems
We study Hamming versions of two classical clustering problems. The Hamming radius p-clustering problem (HRC) for a set S of k binary strings, each of length n, is to find p binary strings of length n that minimize the maximum Hamming distance between a string in S and the closest of the p strings; this minimum value is termed the p-radius of S and is denoted by varrho. The related Hamming diamete

Catalytic decomposition of formic acid on oxide catalysts - III. IOM model approach to bimolecular mechanism
In our previous paper [M.A. Borowiak, M.H. Jamroz, R. Larsson, J. Mol. Catal. A: Chem., 139 (1999) 97], an impulse-oscillation model (IOM) was used for a time description of catalytic acts in the reactions of catalytic decomposition of formic acid on oxide catalysts for unimolecular mechanism. In this paper: the bimolecular mechanism were modelled for the same reactions. The results of IOM calcula
Prognostic implications of BCL6 rearrangement in uniformly treated patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma--a Nordic Lymphoma Group study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic implications of BCL6 rearrangement in a uniformly treated population of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and to characterise the relationship between BCL6 rearrangement and prognostic factors. A total of 269 patients with DLBCL entered a randomised trial comparing the chemotherapy regimen CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorub
Direct measurement of hexahydrophthalic anhydride in workplace air with a transportable Fourier transform infrared spectrometer
A method for direct measurement of hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) in workplace air by use of a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was developed. Two visits were made to a plant manufacturing capacitors where HHPA was used. On the first visit a calibration method was developed according to what was expected to give the best calibration. This was performed by collection of 82 FTIR sp
Role of B800 in carotenoid-bacteriochlorophyll energy and electron transfer in LH2 complexes from the purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides
The role of the B800 in energy and electron transfer in LH2 complexes has been studied using femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The B800 site was perturbed by application of lithium dodecyl sulfate (LDS), and comparison of treated and untreated LH2 complexes from Rhodobacter sphaeroides incorporating carotenoids neurosporene, spheroidene, and spheroidenone was used to exp
Revaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine does not reduce morbidity from malaria in African children
Nous avons investigué si la revaccination avec le BCG à 19 mois rBACKGROUND: Studies in West Africa and elsewhere have suggested that Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine given at birth is beneficial for child survival. It is possible that this effect is mediated partly through an effect on malaria, a hypothesis supported by animal studies. We investigated whether revaccination with BCG at 19 months of age reduced morbidity from malaria. METHOD: In the capita

Synthesis, Structures and Oxo Transfer Reactivity of bis(Dithiolene) Tungsten(IV,VI) Complexes Related to the Active Sites of Tungstoenzymes
A series of bis(dithiolene)tungsten(IV,VI) complexes derived from benzene-1,2-dithiolate (bdt) has been prepared as an synthetic approach to pterin dithiolene-bound active sites of tungstoenzymes, one example of which, a archaeal oxidoreductase, has been established crystallographically (Chan et al. Science 1995, 267, 1463). With [WIVO(bdt)2]2- (2) as the starting compound, silylation with RR'2SiC

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) has been shown to be an effective analgesic for the treatment of moderate pain where it is chiefly indicated, as shown in placebo-controlled studies in the perioperative setting and other acute pain states. In addition, an opioid-sparing effect has been demonstrated. No clinically relevant adverse effects are usually apparent with recommended doses. Paracetamol is an ef
Clinical examination compared with morphometry of digital photographs for evaluation of repaired cleft lips
Twenty-four adult patients who had been operated on as infants for isolated cleft lip underwent clinical examination combined with photographic documentation using a digital camera. The same predetermined protocol comprising 20 variables describing nasolabial appearance was used for both the clinical examination and the computerised evaluation of the images. The correlation between the two methods
Dose dependence of mass and microcalcification detection in digital mammography: free response human observer studies.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dose reduction in digital mammography on the detection of two lesion types-malignant masses and clusters of microcalcifications. Two free-response observer studies were performed-one for each lesion type. Ninety screening images were retrospectively selected; each image was originally acquired under automatic exposure conditions, correspondin
Anomalously mild Younger Dryas summer conditions in southern Greenland
The first late-glacial lake sediments found in Greenland were analyzed with respect to a variety of environmental variables. The analyzed sequence covers the time span between 14400 and 10500 calendar yr B.P., and the data imply that the conditions in southernmost Greenland during the Younger Dryas stadial, 12800-11550 calendar yr B.P., were characterized by an arid climate with cold winters and m
