By combining recent level crossing data with the results from a modified atomic beam experiment by Buck, Rabi, and Senitzky in 1956, a Landégj factor deviating about 0.6% from the LS-value -1.3341 is obtained for the 6p2P3/2 level of Cs133. As this large deviation is difficult to explain, a remeasurement of the hyperfine structure of this level was performed by the zero field optical double resona

The purpose of this study was to develop a method of classifying cancers to specific diagnosticcategories based on their gene expression signatures using artificial neural networks (ANNs).We trained the ANNs using the small, round blue-cell tumors (SRBCTs) as a model. These cancersbelong to four distinct diagnostic categories and often present diagnostic dilemmas in clinicalpractice. The ANNs corr

We used stochastic dynamic programming to investigate a spectacular migration strategy in the black brant Branta bernicla nigricans, a species of goose. Black brant migration is well suited for theoretical analysis since there are a number of existing strategies that easily can be compared. In early autumn, almost the entire population of the black brant gathers at Izembek Lagoon on the Alaska Pen

PURPOSE: Previous reports have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of exogenous gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on micturition. In the current study we tested whether tiagabine (Sanofi Synthelab., Newcastle-upon Tyne, United Kingdom), a GABA re-uptake inhibitor increasing endogenous GABA concentrations, would affect micturition in awake rats or influence rat detrusor contraction in vitro. MATERIALS

Cytogenetic analyses of four squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the esophagus showed complex numerical and structural abnormalities. Chromosomal bands or regions preferentially involved were 11q13, 8q10, 21q10, 3p10similar top11, 1p11similar toq11, 5p11similar toq11, and 14p11similar toq11. For the first time, to our knowledge, recurrent aberrations were identified in esophageal SCC, including homo

This report presents the research concerned with vulnerability analysis of technical infrastructure networks conducted in the research framework programme called FRIVA. The report reviews how network analysis has been used to analyse the vulnerability of systems that are possible to model as networks, such as technical infrastructure systems. In addition, it proposes how these methods can be devel

The current ambition to enlarge the European Union (EU) from fifteen to twenty-seven member states has brought to the fore questions about European integration and its overarching aim. On 7 June, 2001, the Irish people decided not to ratify the Nice Treaty. However, the Irish 'no' was not considered to be an expression of political resentment that could impinge on further development of European i

In September, 1708, for the first time ever in Sweden, an Agave americana (Aloe americana) was in bloom in Sweden. That event attracted much attention: four poets (Magnus Rönnow, Sophia Elisabet Brenner, Tobias Schubarth and Olof Rudbeck the younger) wrote poems in honour of the plant (and its owner, Count Nils Gyldenstolpe). The article analyses the differences between the poems and tries to expl

The transition from a middle Holocene relatively warm and stable climate to a cooler and unstable late Holocene climate is reconstructed using sediments from Lake Igelsjon, south-central Sweden. This multiproxy study illustrates local, regional and global scale responses to climatic change by focusing on a previously identified abrupt hydrological shift to cooler and/or wetter conditions around 40

Since its establishment in 1971, the UAE has been transformed from a subsistence society based mainly on pastoralism and maritime activities (fishing, pearling, and trade) into an ultramodern society, with an economy based on the export of fossil fue

A dedicated AMS facility for depth profiling of tritium in carbon samples has been installed, tested and applied to routine measurements in the Forschungszentrum. Rossendorf. It is based on an SF6-insulated 100 kV tandem accelerator equipped with a thin diamond-like carbon (DLC) stripper foil of about 1 mug/cm(2). With this setup carbon samples with tritium concentrations in the range of 5 x 10(10

Experimental 2D frequency resolved spectra showing the relaxation of excitons in the photosynthetic antenna system FMO are reproduced by a multi-exciton density matrix approach explicitly including the external fields. The interference of the polarizations of a number of randomly placed, rotated and energetically inhomogencous complexes is used to extract the signal in the phase matching direction

An accurate circuit model is presented for the general sample-and-hold circuit with a finite sampling duration. The applications of the model, such as to design a direct down-conversion sampler (RF sampler) and to calculate the thermal noise and output SNR of the general sample-and-hold circuit, are discussed. The results provide a theoretical basis for understanding and designing a sample-and-hol
