The work presented here is based on two papers, both pertaining to perturbation-based control strategies in industrial fed-batch fermentation processes. The first paper describes a new control strategy for avoiding overflow metabolism in the exponential growth phase of a fermentation, based on analysis of the frequency spectrum of the dissolved oxygen measurement following a periodic perturbation

To support learning, a sense of trust between student and teacher is required. This assumption is discussed in relation to three human conditions: the biological, the moral and the political. In the oral space of the classroom, teachers and students are dependent on these preconditions when asking: What is a we? What are we doing? What are we making? How emulation and the presence of trust play in

In a rapidly changing world, it is of fundamental importance to understand processes constraining or facilitating adaptation through microevolution. As different traits of an organism covary, genetic correlations are expected to affect evolutionary trajectories. However, only limited empirical data are available. We investigate the extent to which multivariate constraints affect the rate of adapta

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify young women's ideal images of sexual situations and expectations on themselves in sexual situations. Study design: We conducted audio-taped qualitative individual interviews with 14 women aged 14 to 20 years, visiting two youth centers in Sweden. Data were analysed with constant comparative analysis, the basis of grounded theory methodology. Results

Assessment of the potential impact of climate change on water systems has been an essential part of hydrological research over the last couple of decades. However, the notion that such assessments should also include other changes is relatively recent. In this study, the potential impacts of climate change and continued urbanisation on stormwater flows to a suburban stream, Helsingborg, south Swed

OBJECTIVE - The efficacy and Safety of adding liraglutide (a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist) to Metformin were compared with addition of placebo or glimepiride to metformin in subjects previously treated With oral antidiabetes (OAD) therapy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - In this 26-week, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo- and active-controlled, parallel-group trial, 1,091 subjects were

Despite numerous challenges, since its independence, Uzbekistan, with the exception of the May 2005 Andijan events, has enjoyed extraordinary political stability and not recorded any considerable cases of interethnic or interfaith conflict, regime change or civil war, whereas neighboring Kyrgyzstan, labeled an “island of democracy” by the Western world, has experienced numerous conflicts and chaos

Airways diseases are one of the most common health effects in the western world today. It has been shown that low molecular weight chemicals (LMWC) can cause airways diseases. The mechanisms for these diseases are not well known in most cases. Also, methods for biological monitoring of exposure are not available for many of these LMWC. This limits the possibility for diagnostics and prevention. T

Inflammation promotes phenotypic plasticity in melanoma, a source of non-genetic heterogeneity, but the molecular framework is poorly understood. Here we use functional genomic approaches and identify a reciprocal antagonism between the melanocyte lineage transcription factor MITF and c-Jun, which interconnects inflammation-induced dedifferentiation with pro-inflammatory cytokine responsiveness of

The initiative to start the project Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) was taken in 2002 at the first Nordic Conference on Scholarly Communication (NCSC). The idea was to develop a one stop shop service which made it easier for libraries and aggregators to integrate OA-journals data in their services, for OA-publishers to get their journals visible and for readers to find OA-material. Initia

‘Agreement’ is a grammatical relation between words; e.g., the verbal suffix –s reflects agreement with a singular subject (He run-s). Previous studies with time intervals under 2.5 s between disagreeing words have found a left-lateralized negative brain potential, arguably reflecting detection of the morphosyntactic violation. We tested the neurophysiological effects of number agreement between t

Climate change can move the spatial location of resources critical for population viability, and a species' resilience to such changes will depend upon its ability to flexibly shift its activities away from no-longer-suitable sites to exploit new opportunities. Intuition suggests that vagile predators should be able to track spatial shifts in prey availability, but our data on water pythons (Liasi

We report on VLT/GIRAFFE spectra of stars in two recently discovered ultra-faint satellites, Reticulum 2 and Horologium 1, obtained as part of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We identify 18 members in Reticulum 2 and five in Horologium 1. We find Reticulum 2 to have a velocity dispersion of 3.22(-0.49)(+1.64) km s(-1) , implying a mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of similar to 500. The mean metallicity of Reticulum

This article focuses on Olof von Dalin’s occasional verse, which has not yet been collected in a scholarly edition. Dalin's occasional poems have survived thanks to many people. Some of them were personal friends and acquaintances of his while others did not move in his circles and were not personally known to him. They copied his poems and in not a few cases made sure that they were printed; they
