Measurement of rainfall interception by xerophytic shrubs in re-vegetated sand dunes

More than 40 years of re-vegetation using mainly xerophytic shrubs Artemisia ordosica Krasch. and Caragana korshinskii Kom. at Shapotou Desert Experimental Research Station near Lanzhou, China has resulted in established dwarf-shrub and herbaceous cover on sand dunes. Precipitation, as the sole source of water replenishment in the semiarid area, plays a pertinent role in sustaining the desert ecos

Use of phosphorus release batch tests for modelling an EBPR pilot plant

The aim of this study was to evaluate how routinely performed phosphorus release tests could be used when modelling enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) using activated sludge models such as ASM2d. A pilot plant with an extensive analysis programme was used as basis for the simulations. Without any calibration the prediction of phosphorus removal was poor and the initial release rates fro

Patients' opinion on what constitutes good psychiatric care.

The present study investigates patients' opinion on what constitutes good psychiatric care. It was a qualitative study using an open-ended in-depth interview centring on the patient's experiences of receiving psychiatric care. The subjects were selected to ensure maximum variation and heterogeneity. A model of deliberate sampling for heterogeneity and a modified, stratified sampling method were us

The transition to market-based monetary policy: What can China learn from the European experience?

We discuss the prospects for Chinese money market development and transition to market-based monetary policy operations based on a comparative historical analysis of the present Chinese situation and the development in 11 European countries from 1979 up to the launch of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Central banks in the latter group of countries typically had an incentive to enco

Deterministic radio broadcasting at low cost

We consider distributed deterministic broadcasting in synchronous radio networks. A node receives a message in a given round if and only if exactly one of its neighbors transmits. The source message has to reach all nodes. We assume that nodes do not know the network topology or even their immediate neighborhood. (Such networks are called ad hoc.) We are concerned with two efficiency measures of b

Active centers, catalytic behavior, symbiosis and redox properties of MoV(Nb,Ta)TeO ammoxidation catalysts

Selective as well as waste forming active centers were defined for MoVNbTeO and MoVTaTeO catalysts in the ammoxidation of propane to acrylonitrile and all catalytic functionalities were assigned to specific elements at the respective active centers. Symbiosis between M1 and M2 phases of these catalysts was observed, with phase cooperation being more extensive in the Nb than Ta containing compositi

The purpose of this thesis is to study how fairy tales can change when they are removed from one set of surroundings to another. This movement can occur on several levels; from an orally spoken to a written text, from a rural proletariat to an urban bourgeoisie. The point of departure has been the fairy tale collector and fairy tale writer Eva Wigström (1832-1901) who in the 1880s wandered through

α-l-FucosyItransferases in Human Serum from Donors of Different ABO, Secretor and Lewis Blood-Group Phenotypes

The presence of α-l-fucosyltransferases in human serum of different ABO, secretor and Lewis blood-group phenotypes was investigated with guanosine diphosphate fucose as the sugar donor and low-molecular-weight oligosaccharides, or a macromolecular glycoprotein, as acceptors. In contrast to the α-2-l-fucosyltransferases in human milk, submaxillary glands and stomach mucosa that occur only in ABH se

Spectroscopic evidence for reversible hydrogen storage in unordered Mg5Ni1 thin films

Thin magnesium-nickel films grown on Mo( 110) under ultra-high vacuum conditions were hydrogenated with atomic H and studied by high-resolution core-level photoelectron spectroscopy ( PES) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). We show spectroscopic evidence for reversible hydrogen storage and clear evidence that no Mg segregation or desorption occurs when hydrogen is desorbed from the film. D

In an open, randomized prospective clinical trial the analgesic effect of indomethacin and ketobemidon was compared in 67 patients with acute cholecystitis (28 received 5 mg ketobemidon and 39 received 50 mg indomethacin). Both drugs showed a good and significant pain relief, exhibiting no significant difference in the analgesic effect and no serious adverse reactions. It was concluded that indome
