Liquid-gas-liquid microextraction as a simple technique for the extraction of 2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol from aqueous samples

A solvent-free microextraction technique based on liquid-gas-liquid microextraction was investigated for the extraction and preconcentration of 2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol from aqueous samples. In this study 16 mu L NaOH 1 M as acceptor phase was introduced in the lumen of a polypropylene hollow fiber, with one of its ends heat-sealed. A small piece (about 2 cm) of metallic wire was used to seal the

Ghrelin and motilin are cosecreted from a prominent endocrine cell population in the small intestine

Context: Ghrelin is a novel hormone produced mainly in the gastric body. Hitherto, mapping studies of ghrelin cells covering the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract in humans have been lacking. Furthermore, the phenotype of extragastric ghrelin cells is not known. Objective: The objective of the study was to perform a detailed mapping with specimens from all parts of the GI tract, and colocalizatio

Minute volumes and inspiratory flow rates during exhaustive treadmill walking using respirators

Air flow rate through filters and face masks is one important determinant of the final protection factor of a respiratory protective device in use. Respiratory minute volumes and instantaneous breath flow rates were measured in eight subjects during treadmill work using three types of filtering respirators and one control breathing mask. Work comprised five consecutive bouts of walking at 5 km/h w

Effects of core-level degeneracies on core-level spectra

Effects of core-level degeneracies on X-ray photoemission spectra are considered theoretically and computationally. Processes within each degenerate sub-level manifold are treated by a leading-order cumulant approximation, and processes which connect spin-orbit or crystal-field split levels to leading order in the core-electron self-energy. The cumulant approximation is consistent with earlier asy

Relation between donor transaminase and recipient hepatitis non-A, non-B in Sweden

The relation between donor alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and recipient post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH) non-A, non-B was studied in patients tested before and 6 and 12 weeks after transfusion. The minimum ALT criterion for PTH was 105 IU/l (greater than 2.5 times the upper normal of 42 IU/l). In 8.8% of donors, ALT was greater than 42 IU/l, and in 2.3% ALT was greater than 63 IU/l, i.e., 1.5 time

Linköping Is it possible to understand a society and a certain place that is long since gone? The aim of this thesis is to study and analyse a historic period and its people through the remains of their material culture, the social relations and how these were materialized in an urban setting. The main subject of the empirical study, the medieval episcopal town of Linköping, has shifted out-look, function a

EULAR evidence based recommendations for the management of hand osteoarthritis: report of a task force of the EULAR standing committee for international clinical studies including therapeutics (ESCISIT)

Objectives: To develop evidence based recommendations for the management of hand osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: The multidisciplinary guideline development group comprised 16 rheumatologists, one physiatrist, one orthopaedic surgeon, two allied health professionals, and one evidence based medicine expert, representing 15 different European countries. Each participant contributed up to 10 propositio

The SF-6D health utility index in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Cost effectiveness is an important factor to consider when choosing between various hand surgical interventions. Health utility measures can be used to determine cost effectiveness. The SF-6D is a health utility index derived from 11 items of the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire; values range from 0.296 to 1.0 (“perfect” health). We evaluated the validity of the SF-6D in patients with carpal tu

Geographic variability in patient characteristics, treatment and outcome in an International Trial of Magnesium in acute myocardial infarction

BACKGROUND: The interpretation of clinical trials and efforts directed at reducing the worldwide burden of coronary disease must take regional differences into account. This study examined the regional differences in baseline characteristics, treatment, and outcome in patients presenting with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who were entered into the Magnesium in Coronaries (MAGIC) trial

The complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of the horse, Equus caballus: extensive heteroplasmy of the control region

The sequence of the mitochondrial (mt) DNA of the horse (Equus caballus) was determined. The length of the sequence presented is 16 660 bp. This figure, however, is not absolute due to pronounced heteroplasmy caused by variable numbers of the motif GTGCACCT in the control region of different molecules. Boundaries of the 13 peptide-coding genes were determined by the presence of start and stop codo

Konstruerade kroppar

När någon säger "kvinna" är det inte säkert att alla tänker på samma sak. Vårt kön, men också kroppen, har inte bara fysiologiska/biologiska egenskaper utan utgör också en kulturell konstruktion och är därmed föränderlig.

Venous gas embolism in chamber attendants after hyperbaric exposure

An initial occupational survey (OS) was initiated to investigate the prevalence of venous gas embolism (VGE) in chamber attendants assisting hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatments. Nine female subjects were exposed for three consecutive days to the routine hospital procedure of compressed air exposure to 240 kPa for approximately 115 min with 12 min of terminal oxygen (O2) breathing. VGE was monitore

Medborgardeltagande i den fysiska planeringen - en demokratiteoretisk analys av lagstiftning, retorik och praktik

In the essay an analysis is made of which democratic perspective is prevailing in municipal land-use planning in Sweden, with a particular focus on the aspects of citizen participation and influence. The analysis covers both the intentions that are conveyed in legislation and its preparatory studies, and experience of how it looks like in actual planning. As a basis of the discussion a description

The Effect of Information Quality on Optimal Portfolio Choice

Three types of agents acting on different information sets are considered: fully informed agents, insiders, and outsiders. Differences in information quality are shown to affect the properties of their optimal portfolios. For an outsider, the share of wealth invested in the stock is decreasing in the variance of the stock. However, for an insider, the effect of an increasing stock variance on the

A gene expression fingerprint of mouse stomach ECL cells

Many of the endocrine cells in the stomach are poorly characterized with respect to physiological significance. In some cases, the anticipated hormone has not yet been identified. Global gene expression analysis of mouse stomach was performed in all attempt to identify the ECL-cell peptide/protein. Specific functional activation (omeprazole-induced hypergastrinaemia) was used as a tool to generate

Singular Integral Equations: Applications to Elasticity and Numerical Solution

The purpose of this thesis is to develop stable, accurate, and efficient numerical algorithms for the solution of certain problems in materials science using integral equations. All the appearing integral equations are of the second kind. Such equations are typically well suited for numerical solution. The second kind equations are obtained from first kind equations through analytical regularizati
