On overload control of SPC systems
Some topics in web performance analysis
This thesis consists of four papers on web performance analysis. In the first paper we investigate the performance of overload control through queue length for two different web server architectures. The simulation result suggests that the benefit of request prioritization is noticeable only when the capacities of the sub-systems match each other. In the second paper we present an M/G/1/K*PS queue
Ethanol and its effects on fracture healing and bone mass in male rats
Operatively induced, standardized tibia fractures in 42 10-week-old male rats were fixed with intramedullary nails. 21 of the rats were fed liquid containing 15% ethanol. 5 weeks after inducing the fracture, the rats were killed and the total body bone mineral density (BMD) was analyzed with the DEXA technique, and the mechanical properties of the fractured and the unfractured tibiae as well as th
Combustion Engine Models for Hybrid Vehicle System Development
This report is part of a project that is called Generic hybrid systems. Its objective is to simulate and investigate electric hybrid drive trains. The goal of this work has been to develop combustion engine models that are computer efficient, but still has the potential of giving both qualitative and quantitative results. For instance, if the model is run in a less ideal manner the model will show

Ability of antioxidants to prevent oxidative mutations in Salmonella typhimurium TA102,
An assay for the ability of antioxidants to prevent mutations induced by various oxidants in Salmonella typhimurium TA102 cells was developed. Protection against hydrogen-peroxide-induced mutagenicity was observed for quercetin, caffeic acid, ascorbic acid and dimethyl sulfoxide (used as a solvent for water-insoluble antioxidants). No protective effect was observed for green tea extract (weakly pr

Dimensions of informal care and quality of life among elderly family caregivers.
The aim was to investigate dimensions of caregiving activities among elderly (75+) caregivers based on Nolan's model and to study the dimensions in relation to health-related quality of life (Short Form 12). Responses to a Swedish postal survey (n = 4278, response rate 75-79 years old: 60%; 80-84: 56%; 85-89: 48% and 90+: 42%) showed that 783 persons (18%) were helping another person due to that p

Superconformal algebras and Lie superalgebras of the Hodge theory
We observe a correspondence between the zero modes of superconformal algebras S'(2,1) and W(4) ([8]) and the Lie superalgebras formed by classical operators appearing in the Kahler and hyper-Kahler geometry.
Climate influenced deposition on a low latitude Sheinwoodian carbonate ramp, Gotland, Sweden
The Sheinwoodian succession of Gotland comprises the Högklint, Tofta and Hangvar Formations and most of the Slite Group. The succession consists of hierarchically ordered shallow marine depositional cycles, produced by orbitally forced climate changes. During warmer and wetter intervals (climate maxima) more carbonate was produced than during the cooler and dryer climate minima. Higher carbonate p
Growth hormone overexpression in the central nervous system results in hyperphagia-induced obesity associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia
It is well known that peripherally administered growth hormone (GH) results in decreased body fat mass. However, GH-deficient patients increase their food intake when substituted with GH, suggesting that GH also has an appetite stimulating effect. Transgenic mice with an overexpression of bovine GH in the central nervous system (CNS) were created to investigate the role of GH in CNS. This study sh

SPA (Séquences Potentiellement Acquisitionnelles)The aim of this study is to discuss how ?soliciting? (non-native speakers? requests of native speakers for help in how to express themselves in a foreign language) may play a part in the triggering of SPAs (Séquences Potentiellement Acquisitionnelles or ?learning?teaching sequences?). The beneficial effect of SPAs for learning is still controversial, since no correlation has yet been shown between
Isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis with sciatica. MR imaging vs myelography
Seventeen patients with sciatica and isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In 13, myelography was also performed: 5 had dural sac deformation and root sleeve shortening, 2 had deformation with unilateral root sleeve shortening, one had bilateral root sleeve shortening only, and one had sac deformation only. In 4, myelography was normal. On sagittal MR
Metamorphopsia after successful retinal detachment surgery: an optical coherence tomography study
Purpose: To investigate the findings in optical coherence tomography (OCT) in eyes with metamorphopsia after scleral buckling surgery for macula-off retinal detachment. Methods: A total of 46 patients (46 eyes) with macula-off retinal detachment were prospectively studied 2 months after successful scleral buckling surgery. Patients were examined with the Amsler grid, fundus biomicroscopy and OCT.
Synthesis and localization of pancreatic secretory proteins in pancreatic acinar-like metaplasia in the distal part of the oesophagus
Background: Pancreatic acinar-like metaplasia has previously been described in the gastric mucosa and in the distal part of the oesophagus. The resemblance to pancreatic acinar cells prompted us to study the possible occurrence of secretory pancreatic proteins in these cells. Methods: Seven specimens obtained from the distal oesophagus at gastroscopy where routine microscopy showed pancreatic acin
Cigarette smoking delays bone healing: A prospective study of 200 patients operated on by the hemicallotasis technique
Abstract in UndeterminedBackground Cigarette smoking is known to impede bone healing. The hemicallotasis technique is based on an external fixation and delayed healing prolongs treatment and increases the risk of further complications. Patients and methods 200 patients, 34 smokers and 166 nonsmokers, operated on by the hemicallotasis technique in the proximal tibia for deformities of the knee (kne
Use of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide for rapid detection of rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis
We describe a test which uses the ability of viable cells to reduce 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) to detect resistance to a bactericidal drug, rifampin, in in vitro-cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The assay shows a linear relationship between the number of viable bacteria and the ability to reduce MTT. Dead mycobacteria were unable to reduce MTT. Rifampin
