Sensitivity analysis of a migratory population of redshanks Tringa totanus: a forewarning of a population decline?

Several wader species breeding in agricultural landscapes are declining in Europe. Here, we present evidence that reproduction in a subpopulation of an abundant but vulnerable wader species, the Redshank Tringa totanus, is too low for self-sustainability. We used population data collected from Gotland, SE Sweden, during the breeding seasons of 1997[long dash]2003. We used analytic and simulation-b

HEALTH RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG PERSONS 65 YEARS OR OLDER WITH CHRONIC HEART FAILURE: AN EMPIRICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL STUDY

The aim of this thesis was to empirically and methodologically investigate health related quality of life (HRQoL) among persons 65 years or older with chronic heart failure. The design was cross-sectional and the sample was recruited from a southeast region of Sweden. The sample included 357 respondents in Paper I, II and IV and 349 respondents in Paper III. For all respondents the mean age was 79

Similar support for three different life course socioeconomic models on predicting premature cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality

Background: There are at least three broad conceptual models for the impact of the social environment on adult disease: the critical period, social mobility, and cumulative life course models. Several studies have shown an association between each of these models and mortality. However, few studies have investigated the importance of the different models within the same setting and none has been p

Centrality dependence of charged-neutral particle fluctuations in 158A (GeVPb)-Pb-208+Pb-208 collisions

Results on the study of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in 158A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions are presented for varying centralities. The charged versus neutral particle multiplicity correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal sizes are analyzed by two different methods. Various types of mixed events are constructed to probe fluctua

Inelastic photoproduction of J/psi mesons at HERA

An analysis of inelastic photoproduction of J/psi mesons is presented using data collected at the ep collider HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of above 80 pb(-1), Differential and double I < P-t/psi(2) < differential cross sections are measured in a wide kinematic region: 60 < W-gammap < 260 GeV, 1 p(t,psi)(2) < 60 GeV2 and 0.05 < z < 0.9. where z is the fraction of the energy of the

High-spin states and band terminations in As-69

Excited levels in As-69 were studied using the Ca-40(S-32,3p)As-69 reaction at 95 and 105 MeV beam energy. Gamma rays were detected with the EUROBALL spectrometer operated in conjunction with the Neutron Wall and the charged-particle detector array EUCLIDES. New level sequences with positive and negative parity were identified from 3p-gammagamma and gammagammagamma coincidences. Spins were assigne

Combustion Studies of Soot and Fuel Based on Use of Laser Diagnostics

In the work described in the present thesis, laser techniques for combustion engine diagnostics were developed and applied. The main techniques were laser-induced incandescence (LII) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), used for both flame and engine diagnostics. A novel technique was developed, one in which the relative fuel distribution, as measured by planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF),

Heavy metals and stable isotopes in a benthic omnivore in a trophic gradient of lakes

Heavy metals (Cd, Hg, and Pb) and stable isotopes (N-15, C-13) in crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were studied in a trophic gradient of lakes (N = 19) in southern Sweden. Trophic indicators of the lakes as total phosphorus (tot-P) varied from 5 to 93 mu g/L. The examined lakes had no known point sources of heavy metals, but the catchment areas varied from mainly forested to agricultural land.

Attosecond Optical and Electronic Wave Packets

Kemiska reaktioner där atomer och molekyler är inblandade är exempel på något som sker på väldigt kort tidWhen a low-frequency laser pulse is focused to a high intensity in a gas, the electric field of the laser may become comparable to, or even exceed, the electric field between the electrons and the nucleus in the atom. Under such conditions, through a process known as high-order harmonic generation, bursts of extreme ultraviolet radiation may be emitted, with durations in the attosecond domain (1 a

Chefer och ledare inom offentlig verksamhet har under de senaste åren tillskrivits en nästan magisk betydelse för verDuring the 1990s many of the local authorities have been forced to reduce expenditure on the care of the elderly and people with disabilities, and many organisational changes have been carried out. New problems and their solutions are often related to leadership and management. This dissertation deals with three trends in the development of the organisation: The first trend is a market orientation
