I am a Dutch-German PhD student in history started autumn 2026. I have a MA at Aarhus University and BA at Lund University.
My current research revolves around the use of runes in Upper Dalarna, Sweden. In this region, runic writing survived into the twentieth century. My study explores this writing tradition from a historical-sociolinguistic perspective.
My dissertation aims to conduct a comprehensive corpus-based study that discusses Dalecarlian runic writing within its historical context and in relation to literacy and functionality. I also aim to understand how local conditions in Upper Dalarna allowed runic writing to persist some 300 years after it died out elsewhere. Finally, my study explores the relationship between Dalecarlian runic writing and other (scattered) occurrences of later runic writing traditions.
